DJ Flow is a native of Panama and currently represents Ocala, FL. Music has always been a huge part of his life and he has taken all the knowledge that he has learned from the streets, to help build his career as a DJ. You can always find him rocking parties and spinning at clubs. After mastering the night scene, DJ Flow was given an opportunity that would drastically change his career, the chance to be a mix show DJ for WTMG Magic 101.3 in Gainesville, FL. The opportunity was his way to break into the radio industry and elevate his listening audience from the hundreds of fans he once had in the club, to the now thousands of listeners he entertains daily on the air. He has gained a large loyal following for his mixtapes and has worked with tons of heavy hitters in the hip hop world. DJ Flow's mixtapes have featured everyone from Shawty Lo, Slim Thug and Plies to the R&B stylings of Bobby Valen-tino and J-Holiday. When asked what motivates him, DJ Flow will always say.. Music.. It is the driving force in his life and always will be.

When you hear Clinton Hart talk about his life, it sounds like a rags-to-riches movie script. Faced with the hardships of growing

up in a community plagued with poverty, drugs and crime, it seemed like he wouldn’t have a way out. A believer in the underdog making it to the top, Hart proved the haters wrong. This 32-year-old go-getter went from a small-town, country-boy with dreams of playing professional football, to the starting strong safety for the San Diego Chargers. After visiting a high school in California to share words of wisdom with the youth, he took time to talk to us about his past and how it made him into the man he is today.

People see you, now, as a successful football player. How was life before the fame?

I grew up in Webster, Fla., in an average, middle-class family. Both of my parents worked. My father was a big-time DJ, and he made some bad decisions and we lost everything. When I say we lost everything, I mean we lost it all. We moved into a small, extended camper about 75 to 80 feet long with four people living in there. We ended up poor but rich at heart. My mom kept a high spirit and worked to take care of all of us because my father wasn’t working. She made sure we had everything we needed—food, clothes, Christmas gifts, everything.

You made it out of the hood, how do you deal with your success and not forget where you came from?

You can’t feel guilty for being a success because guys and girls you went to school with didn’t make it out. You go back and show people that you care. Some people just need that little push. I never turn an opportunity down to talk to kids, or any adult that’s willing to listen. You learn from everybody.

Not everyone is going to be the next NFL star, how important is education?

Education is very important. I visited a high school and they were excited because they got a new stadium and I told them that’s great, but you have to be a student first and then an athlete because if not you won’t see the football field. That’s one thing I regret. I grazed by on ability. Young people need to develop their study habits because once you get to the professional level they go through things fast, and if you don’t catch on you’re out of there.

You grew up in a community heavily influenced by drugs; did you ever get caught up in this lifestyle?

I never got involved with it. I would see people come to the house and it would make me mad. I would want to yell at them to get away, but I was

just a teenager. I saw crack and threw crack pipes away. I also saw how crack affected people, but I never got involved with it. I didn’t have to be an example to know that something wasn’t right.

How important is it for young people, especially young black men, to have a positive male role model?

I think it’s important for any kid to have a strong role model, but it’s very impor-tant for young black men. Just because it’s not your son or husband doesn’t mean you’re not respon-sible for being an example. I have a little brother who is a freshman and an athlete. I call him “Little 42,” because that’s my number. I talk to him about what it takes to be successful. Transla-tion gets lost when people think “That’s not my kid, so I don’t have to worry about them.” You have to want to help people.

Growing up, what was your motivation to stay focused on having a football career?

When I was a little kid I always wanted to be a pro athlete. I knew it was a lot of money and it was a lot of fun. When you get older, it’s in the back of your mind that you have a goal. I wasn’t at home play-ing video games, I playing sports.

You were drafted to a Major League Baseball team, but didn’t commit. What made you choose the foot-ball route?

I didn’t know I was drafted and nobody told me. I guess they really wanted me to play football. I knew teams wanted me, but I didn’t know I was drafted until a couple of years ago when someone from my high school told me. I accepted a scholar-ship to play football, so I guess that’s why they never told me. I’m here now.

Life as a professional athlete can be very fast and overwhelming. How do you avoid getting caught up in all the hype?

It’s tough because I came from nowhere, and there’s a time where you have to grow up. To maximize your potential on the field, you have to minimize activities off the field. I stay on the outside looking in, not on the inside looking out. Of course, I like to go out on occasion, but I’m conscious about where I go and who I’m with. A

lot of guys are all about parties and groupies, and I’m not into that. I like to be who I am. You can see me in the mall with a tank top, some shorts and boots on. I’m country and that’s just how I am.

Is it important to have a side hustle?Yes. I’m the type of guy where I want to have my hand in all the cookie jars. I own property, I own a Salon and Spa and other businesses.

You talk about coming from nothing to something, who are some of your favorite underdogs who proved the haters wrong? My favorite athlete is Michael Jordan because when he was in 10th grade

he got cut from the basketball team, and before the next season he grew 4 inches and look at him now. A lot of people told me that I wasn’t going to be anything, and I was going to be like my dad. I like to prove people wrong. I like Rocky Balboa too, because he was an underdog. He fought from the bottom up and that’s what I did. I fought from the bottom up.

What keeps you grounded? When things aren’t going well, you turn to the Man Upstairs first, and then you turn to your spouse and close friends.

How does it feel to be Clinton Hart, right now? There are only 32 guys in my position (as a starting strong safety) in the NFL. To be one of those 32 is amazing. I’ve made it to the pinnacle of where I want to be.

Becky BeckyI don't give a got damn who is performing, dammit girl don't show your goodies to the whole city. Plies is looking at you like "You dumb ass hoe, gone take it to the floor, for a nigga you don't know, you filthy ass hoe". You showed him your va-jay-jay??? Why? I pray to God you don't have kids, because this can't be the kind of example you set for them. He will continue to make songs degrading women like you because you allow it. Do better boo boo!

Str8 Faded! This is not a look that can be pulled off easily. In order for this to work you have to have the face and the attitude. Celebrities are

trying to pull it off, but only Amber can do it in my eyes. She is truly a bad one! You are wearing it it very well. Celeb status in my eyes. You go girl!

AWWW!Ok, so of course you're violating with the white bra. Clearly a black one or a leopard print one to match your shirt would have been a great pick. I strongly suggest all

women to take your time when leaving your

home to go out on the town. It's a shame

when some "men" look better than you do in drag. Do better boo, and

cut your bangs. Boy oh boy.

of October. She is scheduled to have many A-list guests appear, but above anything, expect this to be a fun-filled hour of entertainment from the Queen of Comedy herself.

Yes, that is Frankie, Keyshia Cole's mom. No, I do not know, what that is holding her, what they are doing or whether this is news worthy; but it sure is funny! And moving on...

While Lil' Wayne celebrated his 27th birthday, Baby aka Birdman helped him celebrate by getting Wayne's birth date tattooed on his arm and buying him a $1 million Chopard watch.

Allegedly Jermaine DuPri and Janet Jackson had broken up but the duo was caught partying it up at Fashion Week in Milan with Donatella Versace. Good Luck to them.

And on to some much needed advice...

Dear Shannon,

I recently got a ticket which I think suspended my license but, am wondering if I should tell my girlfriend. I want to tell her only because she's been wondering why I've been hanging with my boys so much. Either way I know I am going to have to hear her mouth; is it worth telling her?

-Suspended

Dear Suspended,

While you may enjoy the extra time you get to spend with your boys, it may pay off in the long run to explain the ticket situation to your girlfriend. Hopefully, she will understand the legal consequences you're having to deal with while trying to make better decisions to not be in this situation again. Figure out your cost/benefit analysis in whether or not you'll get cursed out, when she finds out. If the benefit > costs, go with that option. Also, you may want to check into driving school as it may lower your ticket fines and reduce your driving points. ;)

Best of luck, Shannon

For anyone who knows me it is no surprise that my favorite team is the New England Patriots. I don’t know if Brady isn’t fully recu-

perated or if the team needs some more time to gel. But barely beating the Bills and losing to the Jets not only irked my nerves but is also unacceptable. The object is to win every game but you HAVE to win Division games. I know it’s still early but you have to set the bar high. There are some teams that are looking good such as The Vikings, The Giants and the Saints. Then there are those teams that lost games they shouldn’t have like in week two when the Patriots, Eagles and the Steelers lost. I saw highlights from all the games; unfortunately the

game I did see in its entirety that week was the Patriots vs Jets. Belichick was outcoached that game and the offense struggled. It was the Defense that prevented a potential embar-rassment. I am happy though to see the Pats defense holding it

down without Richard Seymour and Tedy Bruschi. I have to give props to Apopka’s own Brandon Meriweather for causing the fumble in week one that lead to the Patriots win over the Bills. I am not worried about my team’s chances. They are a tough team and play well under pressure. I know they won’t be going down without a fight. Not sure if I agree but Juan Manual Marquez, who recently lost to Floyd Mayweather, might suggest that to keep up a good fight one should drink his own urine. That’s right! The man drank his own urine in preparation for his fight.

Have you ever noticed that no matter what advertisement Tiger woods is in he always shows

the Nike swoosh? I know that Tiger’s Nike contract is large but if he has to show the swoosh even in adds for Cadillac and Gillette then we need a word for larger than large.

Only four weeks into the football season and the NBA is about to head to training camp. This is an exciting time for sports lovers. It’s like a buffet of football, basketball, both college and professional, and the World Series. I’m going to be overwhelmed but I am going to try to talk about as much as possible.

30 Second TimeouTThis 30 second timeout goes to Delonte West

who was pulled over while on his Motorcycle in Maryland. West was carrying a guitar case on his back with a shotgun inside and two other pistols. He must have been riding to Iraq. I don’t know why he was rid-ing like that or better yet, why he claims to have been riding so strapped. But all I can think about is how much of a waste of money a bad decision like that is. Now he has to pay lawyers and other associated fees.

1. Jealousy. Every rapper wants to be the "King", the problem is none of them want anyone else to take that title, so they don't get behind any rapper that they feel is a threat to them becoming "King". Lets support other artists so the whole city can be put on the Hip Hop Industry's Map!

2. Money. Lets face it, most artists aren't spending too much money on their own music, so why should anyone else support their music? Alot of artists that do have money, don't have quality music and the ones that have great quality music, don't have money!

3. lack of local support. If your local fans aren't supporting your music, it makes it that much more difficult for a label based in New York or Los Angeles to sign you or even hear about you.

4. lack of consistent proMotion. This topic goes back into the Money & Lack of local support factors. If these artists aren't spending money to press up their cd's & flood the streets, how are the Hip Hop fans going to even hear their music to even know if they like it enough to support it?

5. stop following trends, lets start trends! We bring in alot of outside trends into the city. The problem with this is people on the outside looking in, think that we are biting Atlanta or New York's style. I think we need a group of artists to come together and create something that originates locally and let's set the trend!

6. learn how to take constructive criticisM. If an artist has done everything they can to try to get a DJ to play their music and the DJ still doesn't want to play it, they need to be able to take constructive criticism. Alot of artists press up CD singles on songs that are not good singles. Please learn how to get feedback before you spend money shopping a single. Once you receive that feedback, learn how to accept it. If most of the DJ's & people aren't feeling that song, this doesn't mean they are "hating on you", it means you need to switch up your single! 7. only listening to your hoMeboys. Alot of times artists' homeboys will tell them "your music is fire" when in reality they are afraid to tell you that they wouldn't listen to your music if they weren't your homeboy. Get feedback from sources outside of your immediate circle before you claim "I'm the hottest rapper out". 8. lack of quality production/Mixing. We get sent music all the time that is not properly mixed down. Please do not send anyone outside your immediate circle any music that is not mixed properly (First impression is sometimes your Last impression). If you get hot beats from a producer for free, take them all day. However if you are just taking a beat because it's Free, you are wasting everyone's time! Artists you need to build relationships with hot producers and I'm sure that the prices can be worked out for hot production. 9. build relationships, don't burn bridges! If you understand the music industry you obviously see that their are alot of politics involved! Accept it, don't overlook it! I'm tired of hearing artists saying "I ain't no industry n****"! Obviously thats why you haven't made it in the "Music Industry". Introduce yourself to a DJ before you ask them to spin your record! Don't curse a DJ out if he doesn't spin your record, why should he? You complain that DJ's only spin local artists that they are cool with, so take notes and get "cool" with these DJs!
