• Norms!
Learning Target: glue on page 5
Agenda
• Homework: Safety Contract• Finish setting up Notebook• Intro to Uncertainty
Today’s Learning Target
• I can prepare to be safe in lab experiments• I can explain the importance of using
uncertainly in measurement.
Task Instructions: Notebook Set Up
• Get and Give information equally
• Working together will get there faster
• Stay on task!
DO• Follow the
directions to set up your notebook
• Ask three then me!
RAISE your hand if you have a clarifying question.
Task Instructions: Notebook Set UP
TIME • 10 minutes
Non Negotiables
• No food or drinks (except water) in class• No electronics unless we instruct you• Bathroom use: only 2x a week, max 4 minutes
Uncertainty
• Draw this on your white board
Tennis Ball (seconds) Tile (cm)
Warm Up- YOU HAVE 5 MIN TO FINISH
• Tennis Ball– One person needs to stand on the table and drop a
tennis ball– Everyone else at the table needs to time and record
their numbers on the white (there will be three)• Tile– Each person needs to measure the length of a tile
on the floor to the nearest mm– Record numbers on white board (there will be four)
Share Out
• What do we notice about our timing? Or measuring?
Set up Cornell Notes on Right hand Side of Journal
• Title: Uncertainty
Take these notes on the right side of your drawn line
• Uncertainty of measurement is the doubt that exists about the result of any measurement– Last significant figure is uncertain on a measuring tool
– Uncertainty is =– Range = (biggest number – smallest number)– Average = (add data)/(amount of data)»Write in notes and on equation page
Which data set is better?
Set A: 8, 10, 12Set B: 4, 10, 16
Visually
8 1012
4 10 16

Tennis Ball and Tile
• Using your data find the average and uncertainty of your measurements.
– Uncertainty is =– Range = (biggest number – smallest number)– Average = (add data)/(amount of data)
• Write your averages and uncertainties on the large white board
Practice/Homework
• Averaging and Uncertainty Practice
