The gift of new life, of eternal life, is the gift of the risen Christ. It is the promise of Jesus. It was true for Dorcas in Joppa. It was true for those “who have come out of the great ordeal” in the Revelation vision. It is true for us and for all the baptized: Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS

We stand. All may make the sign of the cross, the sign that is marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins.

In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

God’s mercy is deeper than the depths of the sea, and God’s grace is wider than the whole of the earth. Trusting in that mercy and that grace, let us make our confession, before God and each other.

Silence is kept for reflection.

Holy God, we open our hearts to you this day, and offer the truth of our lives. We give to you today: the fear that stifles us, the prejudice that blinds us, the ignorance that hobbles us, the doubt that plagues us. Help us, we pray, that we will find courage in unlikely places, see the world with new and gracious eyes, move to those places where love is needed, have faith that you are with us. This we pray in Jesus’ name. Amen. Hear the Good News: we are forgiven! We are set free to go out into the world and be the loving, gracious, hopeful people of God! Alleluia! Amen. The assembly turns to face the cross as it enters the sanctuary, following the cross as we have followed Jesus into this holy place and time of corporate worship.

GATHERING HYMN 369 Christ the Lord Is Risen Today LLANFAIR

ANTHEM Antiphonal Praise Michael Bedford Lobchor

FIRST READING Acts 9:36-43 Now in Joppa there was a disciple whose name was Tabitha, which in Greek is Dorcas. She was devoted to good works and acts of charity. At that time she became ill and died. When they had washed her, they laid her in a room upstairs. Since Lydda was near Joppa, the disciples, who heard that Peter was there, sent two men to him with the request, “Please come to us without delay.” So Peter got up and went with them; and when he arrived, they took him to the room upstairs. All the widows stood beside him, weeping and showing tunics and other clothing that Dorcas had made while she was with them. Peter put all of them outside, and then he knelt down and prayed. He turned to the body and said, “Tabitha, get up.” Then she opened her eyes, and seeing Peter, she sat up. He gave her his hand and helped her up. Then calling the saints and widows, he showed her to be alive. This became known throughout Joppa, and many believed in the Lord. Meanwhile he stayed in Joppa for some time with a certain Simon, a tanner.

The word of the Lord. The assembly responds: Thanks be to God.

PSALM Hymn 782 My Shepherd, You Supply My Need RESIGNATION

Stanza 1 - Jubilate Choir & Lobchor Stanzas 2 & 3 - ALL

SECOND READING Revelation 7:9-17 After this I looked, and there was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, robed in white, with palm branches in their hands. They cried out in a loud voice, saying, “Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb!” And all the angels stood around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, singing, “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen.” Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, “Who are these, robed in white, and where have they come from?” I said to him, “Sir, you are the one that knows.” Then he said to me, “These are they who have come out of the great ordeal; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. For this reason they are before the throne of God, and worship him day and night within his temple, and the one who is seated on the throne will shelter them. They will hunger no more, and thirst no more; the sun will not strike them, nor any scorching heat; for the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of the water of life, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”

The word of the Lord. The assembly responds: Thanks be to God.

We stand.

GOSPEL John 10:22-30

The holy gospel according to Saint John.

At that time the festival of the Dedication took place in Jerusalem. It was winter, and Jesus was walking in the temple, in the portico of Solomon. So the Jews gathered around him and said to him, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.” Jesus answered, “I have told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father’s name testify to me; but you do not believe, because you do not belong to my sheep. My sheep hear my voice. I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one will snatch them out of my hand. What my Father has given me is greater than all else, and no one can snatch it out of the Father’s hand. The Father and I are one.”

9

NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Trusting God’s promise of new life, we pray for the renewal of the church, the world, and all of creation.

Each portion of the prayers conclude:

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

We commend these and all our prayers to you, O God. Come near to us with your saving help, for the sake of Jesus Christ, our risen Lord.

Amen.

PEACE

The presiding minister and the assembly greet each other in the peace of the risen Christ.

The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you.

The people may greet one another with a sign of Christ’s peace, and may say Peace be with you or similar words.

We sit.

OFFERTORY HYMN

Let us pray.

If our days do not begin and end in you, O Lord, they come to nothing. Bless our efforts at faithfulness, even when we fall short; Work through us to nourish your whole creation, to see your abundance; Turn our hearts toward those who hunger in any way, that all may know your care; and prepare us now to meet you at the table through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. EUCHARISTIC PRAYER You are indeed holy, almighty and merciful God. You are most holy, and great is the majesty of your glory. You so loved the world that you gave your only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but have eternal life. We give you thanks for his coming into the world to fulfill for us your holy will and to accomplish all things for our salvation. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.

Lord, remember us in your kingdom and teach us to pray:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

The presiding minister lifts the bread and cup and says

When we eat this bread, we share the body of Christ. When we drink this cup, we share the blood of Christ.

The assembly responds

Reveal yourself to us, O Lord, in the breaking of bread, as once you revealed yourself to your disciples.

RECOGNITION OF HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS Vicar: Today we celebrate with those who are taking another step in their faith and life journeys. Will the high school graduates and their parents please come forward.

In Christian love years ago, you presented these children for Holy Baptism. In Baptism, sacred promises were made. As parents of these young women and men, it was part of your calling to see that those sacred promises were kept:

to live with them among God’s faithful people, to bring them to the word of God and the holy supper, to teach them the Lord’s Prayer, the Creed, and the Ten Commandments, to place in their hands the holy scriptures, and to nurture them in faith and prayer.

Parents, at your child’s confirmation we acknowledged that these promises had been fulfilled, but your children were still your children. Today we celebrate another milestone. As these young people prepare to go off to college, the workplace, or wherever their life journey takes them, we remember that they are still your children. We now ask you and the congregation to covenant with these young men and women for the ongoing support of their faith journeys. Do you intend to routinely lift your children up in prayer? Parents: I do, and I ask God to help me.

Vicar: Congregation, will you support, encourage, and pray for these young men and women and their parents?

Page 16: Fourth Sunday of Easter/Youth Sunday...3 Holy God, we open our hearts to you this day, and offer the truth of our lives. We give to you today: the fear that stifles us, the prejudice

16

Congregation: We will, with God’s help.

Pastor: Graduates, do you intend to continue in the covenant God made with you in Holy Baptism: to live among God’s faithful people,

to hear the word of God and share in the Lord’s supper, to proclaim the good news of God in Christ through word and deed, to serve all people, following the example of Jesus, and to strive for justice and peace in all the earth?

Graduates: I do, and I ask God to help and guide me.

PRESENTATION OF QUILTS

Vicar: Graduates, there was a day when your parents held you in their arms and they wrapped you in a blanket to keep you safe and warm and comforted. Very soon you will be launching a new life, away from the safety and security of this home, family, church, and community. As you go out into the world, may this quilt be a reminder of your parents’ love and the nurture of this Christian community.

(Parents stand with your backs to the altar and with your son/daughter facing you. Wrap the quilt around your son’s/daughter’s shoulders, leaving your hands on their shoulders while the group repeats the blessing, following the pastor’s prompts.)

Parents repeat after Pastor:

We come this day before God to bless you and thank God for your life. You have given my life a deeper meaning and calling. Through you, I have experienced God’s love, joy, and forgiveness. Wherever you go, whatever you do, my love goes with you; you will always be part of my heart. May this quilt remind you of the warmth of my love, the care of this faith community, and the comfort of the Holy Spirit. And on those nights when we cannot be together, wrap yourself in this quilt and know that in God’s family you are never alone.

Graduates repeat after Vicar:

You have given of your heart and of your home. You have loved and cared for me, even when it was difficult. Today, I honor and thank you for your courage, patience, wisdom, and love. Wherever I go and whatever I do, I will always be your child, blessed by your love. I thank God for blessing my life with you.

Vicar: The peace of the Lord be with you always.

Congregation: And also with you.

Page 17: Fourth Sunday of Easter/Youth Sunday...3 Holy God, we open our hearts to you this day, and offer the truth of our lives. We give to you today: the fear that stifles us, the prejudice

17

Pastor: Let us pray. Wherever you wander, no matter how dark the night, may the warmth of this quilt, the love of your parents, the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the prayers of this church, the power of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you now and forever. Go with God’s blessings. Amen.

BLESSING May the peace of the Lord Christ go with you : wherever he may send you; may he guide you through the wilderness : protect you through the storm; may he bring you home rejoicing : at the wonders he has shown you; may he bring you home rejoicing : once again into our doors. Amen.

SENDING HYMN 825 You Servants of God LYONS

The assembly faces the cross as it leaves the sanctuary, following the cross as we follow Jesus into the world. All remain facing the cross for the dismissal.

DISMISSAL

You are the body of Christ raised up and sent for the sake of the world.

Go in peace. Be bold in telling the Story. Thanks be to God.
