Readers Workshop
This month, students are beginning exciting units of study. In reading, students will participate in fiction book clubs. Clubs are important because it is beneficial for children to interact and have meaningful conversations with their peers.
Throughout this unit, students will focus on the following priority stand-ards:
Inferring about characters and other story elements
Determining themes/cohesion
Analyzing parts in relation to the whole
Analyzing perspective
Writers Workshop
In Writing, students will write literary essays about texts they have read. Throughout the unit, students will be taught the value of close reading of complex texts. Students will learn how to read literature closely and write about the literature they are reading. Students will learn to write struc-tured essays in which they make and support claims, and analyze and incorpo-rate evidence. Students will also learn how to compare and contrast themes and topics in literature. Thus, students will be taught how to cite evidence from two texts in a purposeful way. The following standards will be ad-dressed:
Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with rea-sons and information
Introduce a topic or text clearly, state an opinion, and create an or-ganizational structure in which related ideas are grouped to support the writer's purpose
Provide reasons that are supported by facts and de-tails
Link opinion and reasons using words and phrases (e.g., for instance, in order to, in addition)
Provide a concluding statement or section related to the opinion presented

In November, police officers from One Police Plaza visited the school to teach students about bullying. Offic-ers spoke about the harmful effects of bullying and how to stand up for yourself and others.
Members of FDNY visited class-rooms to teach students about fire safety. Students learned how to prevent fires and what to do in case of an emergency.
Our Student Council has been busy planning school-wide events and activities. Once again, our school is participating in the City Harvest food drive. This is New York City’s largest food drive and it helps to feed 1.2 million New Yorkers! Food collected helps to keep shelves stocked at 500 soup kitchens, food pantries, and other community food programs across the city. Last year, we donated over 500 pounds of food.
