FEAST OF CORPUS CHRISTI

The Feast of Corpus Christi is celebrated in the Catholic Church on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday or, in some places such as the United States, it is transferred by an Indult to the following Sunday. The feast was institut-ed to honor the Lord’s presence in the Most Blessed Sacrament. Since Holy Thursday is so close to Good Friday, our minds are turned with sadness to the Passion of the Lord so joy over the institution of the Holy Eucharist can-not be sufficiently expressed, thus the necessity of this Feast.

There were 2 separate miracles that lead to the institution of the feast in the Catholic Church:

The Vision of St Juliana of Cornillon

St Juliana had a great devotion to the Blessed Sacrament from her youth and longed for a special feast to celebrate devotion to Our Lord’s Presence in the Blessed Sacrament. The saint had a vision of the Church under the appearance of a full moon which had one dark spot. During the vision, she heard a mysterious, heavenly voice explain that the moon represented the Church at that time, and the dark spot symbolised the fact that a great feast in honour of the Blessed Sacrament was missing from the liturgical calendar. St Juliana confessed the vision to Bishop Robert de Thorete, then Bishop of Liège, and Jacques Pantaléon, who later became Pope Urban IV. Bishop Robert was favourably impressed and called a synod in 1246 which authorised the celebration of a feast dedicated to Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament – Corpus Christi – to be held in the diocese in the following year.

Eucharistic Miracle at Bolsena

Fr Pietro da Praga had grown lukewarm in his love of the Eucharist and had doubts as to whether the Eucharist was the real Body and Blood of Our Lord. In 1263, whilst celebrating Holy Mass in the Church San-ta Cristina in Bolsena, at the breaking of the Bread, the precious Blood of Our Lord flowed from the Host, covering the altar cloth, corporal and the floor. Pope Urban IV, who was residing at Orvieto at the time, ordered that the precious cloth, covered with the precious blood, was to be brought to the Church of St Mary in Orvieto where it is still venerated even today.

SOLEMNITY OF THE SACRED HEART The annual Global Rosary Relay for the sanctification of priests on the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus on June 19, 2020 will be prayed once again to recognize and bless the work of priests serving the faithful the world over.

Each of the participating prayer locations in 85+ countries prays a particular mystery of the Rosary at a particular half hour on the day in thanksgiving to God for our priests and to implore the protection and lov-ing care of Our Lady, Mother of all priests, for all her priestly sons. With the coming of midnight on the June 19, 2020, the entire world, by then, will have been encircled in prayer for our priests on this The An-nual Rosary Relay Day.

It was the great Irish priest Fr. Patrick Peyton who never tired of saying that: ‘The Family that prays together stays together.’ As the family of the Church, you are invited to join your prayers to the pray-ers of millions throughout the world on June 19, 2020. It is an opportunity for us to raise our hearts to God for all priests in the exercise of their ministry; that they will be blessed, through our prayers, with God’s grace for their priesthood; that in this worldwide communion of prayer for them, they may experience our gratitude and support; and finally that they will persevere in unity with Christ and his Church and shepherd the Lord’s flock to the safe pastures of his Kingdom.

Holy Innocents Church will join this Global Rosary on Friday, June 19 at 7:30 p.m. via our zoom meetng. Following the 6:30 p.m. 54-day we will recite the Mysteries of Light at 7:30 p.m. for the sanctification of the clergy.

Proclamation of the Feast of Corpus Christi.

On the 11 August 1264, Pope Urban IV published the Bull “Transiturus de hoc mundo”, in which, after having extolled the love of Our Saviour as expressed in the Holy Eucharist, he ordered the annual celebration of the Solemnity of Corpus Christi, in the universal Church. The bull also granted many indulgences to the faithful for the attendance at Mass and at the Office. To celebrate the feast St Thomas Aquinas wrote the very beautiful liturgy celebrated on the Solemnity. The hymn, Adoro te Devote is a beautiful Eucharistic Hymn also written by the Angelic Doctor: Adoro te devote

Adóro te devóte, látens Déitas, Quæ sub his figúris, vere látitas: Tibi se cor meum totum súbjicit, Quia, te contémplans, totum déficit.

Visus, tactus, gustus, in te fállitur, Sed audítu solo tuto créditur: Credo quidquid díxit Dei Fílius; Nil hoc verbo veritátis vérius.

In cruce latébat sola Déitas, At hic látet simul et humánitas: Ambo támen crédens átque cónfitens, Peto quod petívit latro pœnitens.

Plagas, sicut Thomas, non intúeor, Deum támen meum te confíteor. Fac me tibi sémper mágis crédere, In te spem habére, te dilígere.

O memoriále mortis Dómini, Panis vivus, vitam præstans hómini, Praesta Meae menti de Te vivere Et te illi Semper dulce sápere.

Pie pellicáne, Jesu Dómine, Me immúndum munda tuo sánguine, Cujus una stilla salvum fácere, Totum mundum quit ab ómni scélere.

Jesu, quem velátum nunc aspício, Oro fíat illud, quod tam sítio: Ut, te reveláta cernens fácie, Visu sim beátus tuæ glóriæ. Amen.

I devoutly adore you

I devoutly adore you, O hidden Deity, Truly hidden beneath these appearances. My whole heart submits to you, And in contemplating you, It surrenders itself completely.

Sight, touch, taste are all deceived in their judgment of you, But hearing suffices firmly to believe. I believe all that the Son of God has spoken; There is nothing truer than this word of truth.

On the cross only the divinity was hidden, But here the humanity is also hidden. Yet believing and confessing both, I ask for what the repentant thief asked.

I do not see the wounds as Thomas did, But I confess that you are my God. Make me believe more and more in you, Hope in you and love you.

O memorial of our Lord's death! Living bread that gives life to man, Grant my soul to live on you, And always to savor your sweetness.

Lord Jesus, Good Pelican, wash my filthiness and clean me with your blood, One drop of which can free the entire world of all its sins.

Jesus, whom now I see hidden, I ask you to fulfill what I so desire: That the sight of your face being unveiled I may have the happiness of seeing your glory. Amen.

The Importance of Eucharistic Adoration

“Do you realize that Jesus is there in the Blessed Sacrament expressly for you, for you alone? He burns with the desire to come into your heart.” “Frequently, only silence can express my prayer. However, this Di-vine Guest of the tabernacle understands all, even the silence of a child's soul filled with gratitude. When I am before the tabernacle, I can say only one thing to Our Lord: 'My God, you know that I love you' and I feel my prayer does not tire Jesus." “To bear the exile of this valley of tears I need the glance of my Divine Savior. This glance full of love has revealed its charms to me. It has made me sense the happiness of Heaven. My Jesus smiles at me when I sigh to Him. Then I no longer feel my trial of faith. My God’s Glance, His ravishing Smile, That is Heaven for me!” “How I loved the feasts!…I especially loved the processions in honor of the Blessed Sacra-ment. What a joy it was for me to throw flowers beneath the feet of God!…I was never so happy as when I saw my roses touch the sacred Monstrance.”

- St. Therese of Lisieux

“I need nothing in this world in order to be happy. I only need to see Jesus in Heaven whom I now see and adore on the altar with the eyes of faith.”

- St. Dominic Savio

FATHER MICHAEL McGIVNEY TO BE BEATIFIED

During a May 26 meeting with Cardinal Angelo Becciu, the prefect of the Con-gregation for the Causes of Saints, Pope Francis approved a miracle attributed to the intercession of Fr. Michael J. McGivney, the founder of the Knights of Columbus. The miracle involved an unborn child in the United States who was healed in utero of a life-threatening condition in 2015 after his family prayed to Fr. McGivney.

Fr. McGivney was born in Waterbury, Connecticut, in 1852, and played a critical role in the growth of the Church in the United States in the latter part of the 19th century. After his ordination in Baltimore in 1877, he served a largely Irish-American and immigrant communi-ty in New Haven.

Amid an anti-Catholic climate, he established the Knights to provide spiritual aid to Catholic men and financial help for families that had lost their breadwinner.

Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson said: “Fr. McGivney has inspired generations of Catholic men to roll up their sleeves and put their faith into action. He was decades ahead of his time in giving the laity an important role within the Church.”

ST. GREGORY BARBARIGO

St. Gregory Barbarigo was born on Sep-tember 16, 1625 of a very old and dis-tinguished Venetian family. A brilliant student, he embraced a diplomatic career and accompanied the Venetian Ambassador, Contarini, to the Congress of Munster in 1648. Then he became a priest and was soon thereafter conse-crated as the first Bishop of Bergamo by Pope Alexander VII. Later on he was elevated to the rank of Cardinal and also given authority over the diocese of Padua. He guid-ed his flock with pastoral wisdom and deep understand-ing. St. Gregory Barbarigo worked unceasingly in carrying out the reforms set forth by the Council of Trent. Through his efforts the seminaries of both Bergamo and Padua were substantially enlarged. At Padua he also add-ed a library and a printing press. He was a frontrunner in both the 1689 and 1691 papal conclaves as he had distin-guished himself for his diplomatic and scholastic ser-vice. He became a noted scholar for his distinguished learning and as an able pastor for his careful attention to pastoral initiatives and frequent parish visitations. He died on June 18, 1697. Barbarigo's beatification was cel-ebrated in 1761 under Pope Clement XIII, while Pope John XXIII canonized the late cardinal in 1960; the latter pope held Barbarigo as a great role model and fostered a devotion to him since the pope had hailed from Bergamo. His liturgical feast is celebrated on June 17th.

We invite you to name your child(ren) and provide the opportunity to have

your babyʹs name inscribed in our “Book of Lifeʺ.

LEGION OF MARY – REGINA MUNDI

The Holy Innocents Legion of Mary group meets each Monday in the Parish Hall fol-lowing the 6 p. m. Mass. For more infor-mation on joining this ministry as an ac-tive or auxiliary member please contact Melissa Becker at: [email protected]

Often children who have died before birth have no grave or headstone, and sometimes not even a name. At The Church of The Holy Innocents, we invite you to name your child(ren) and to have the opportunity to have your baby's name inscribed in our "BOOK OF LIFE". Here, a candle is always lit in their memory. All day long people stop to pray. On the first Monday of every month, our 12:15pm Mass is celebrated in honor of these children and for the comfort of their families. We pray that you will find peace in knowing that your child(ren) will be remembered at the Shrine and honored by all who pray here.

We will inscribe the names of babies who have died before and at birth in our Book of Life, and as always, we invite

you to visit the Shrine if you are in New York City.

SUBWAY ROSARY

Our Regina Mundi Praesidium of the Legion of Mary conducts a Subway Rosary on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month. The group will then proceed to 42nd and Broadway Time Square subway station. We
