Hebrews 6:1-3 (NIV)

Therefore let us leave the elementary teachings about Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again the

foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God, instruction about baptisms, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment.

And God permitting, we will do so.

1. Jesus came to the world to get people to repent of sin.

2. All people have been born sinners since Adam & Eve.

3. People didn’t sin first: Lucifer / Satan / the Devil did.

4. Sin must be punished with labor, pain, disease and death.

5. We all weren’t just born sinners, we all sin, and habitually.

6. We didn’t really know what sin was until we got the Law.

7. Since Jesus, the Law of Moses has been fulfilled by love.

8. Dead works sums up our efforts to earn God’s salvation.

9. To repent means to ask forgiveness and turn from sin.

10. Those who never repent will be punished on the Last Day.

11. If we do repent, God receives us with many good gifts.

12. After we repent, we should preach repentance to others.

Q1:

Why did Jesus come to earth?

Page 6: Foundation Stone #1: Repent from Dead Works

Q1: Why did Jesus come to earth?

A1: To do what God has been trying to do throughout history: get people to repent. Jesus came to be a doctor who heals sick people-spiritually sick. He came to call sinners to repentance.

R1: 2 Chronicles 7:14 and Luke 5:31,32

Page 7: Foundation Stone #1: Repent from Dead Works

2 Chronicles 7:14 if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land. Luke 5:31,32 Jesus answered them, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance." (NIV)

Page 8: Foundation Stone #1: Repent from Dead Works

Q2:

When did people start to sin?

Page 9: Foundation Stone #1: Repent from Dead Works

Q2: When did people start to sin?

A2: The first man, Adam, and the first woman, Eve, his wife, became the first sinners when they disobeyed God's only rule: not to eat from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. Because we are their children, their nature (DNA-physical and spiritual) is in every single one of us. We were born sinners.

R2: Genesis 2:16,17 and Genesis 3:1-6

Page 10: Foundation Stone #1: Repent from Dead Works

Genesis 2:16,17 And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, "You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die."

Genesis 3:1-6 Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God actually say, 'You shall not eat of any tree in the garden'?" And the woman said to the serpent, "We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, but God said, 'You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.'" But the serpent said to the woman, "You will not surely die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.

Q3:

Was there a sinner before people started to sin?

Page 12: Foundation Stone #1: Repent from Dead Works

Q3: Was there a sinner before people started to sin?

A3: Yes, Satan, the Devil, Lucifer, the Serpent, was originally an angel in heaven, but he became full of pride and rebelled against God. God judged him and threw him out of heaven. He met the first woman, Eve, in the Garden of Eden, and wanted her to rebel against God, too.

R3: Genesis 3:1-5 and Luke 10:17,18

Page 13: Foundation Stone #1: Repent from Dead Works

Luke 10:17,18 The seventy-two returned with joy, saying, "Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name!" And he (Jesus) said to them, "I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.”

Page 14: Foundation Stone #1: Repent from Dead Works

Q4:

What is the punishment for sin?

Page 15: Foundation Stone #1: Repent from Dead Works

Q4: What is the punishment for sin?

A4: Hard work, pain, disease and death. Thanks to Adam and Eve, our lives are miserable and short.

R4: Genesis 3:17-19

Page 16: Foundation Stone #1: Repent from Dead Works

Genesis 3:17-19 To Adam he said, "Because you have listened to your wife's voice, and have eaten of the tree, of which I commanded you, saying, 'You shall not eat of it,' cursed is the ground for your sake. In toil you will eat of it all the days of your life. Thorns also and thistles will it bring forth to you; and you will eat the herb of the field. By the sweat of your face will you eat bread until you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken. For you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”

Page 17: Foundation Stone #1: Repent from Dead Works

Q5:

Besides being born sinners, do people still sin?

Page 18: Foundation Stone #1: Repent from Dead Works

Q5: Besides being born sinners, do people still sin?

A5: Absolutely, everyone sins. Some sins we commit. Some sins come from what we omit (don't do). Some of us have sin habits, called iniquities, which are often learned from our parents.

R5: Romans 3:23 and Matthew 25:41-46

Page 19: Foundation Stone #1: Repent from Dead Works

Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, Matthew 25:41-46 "Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.' "They also will answer, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?' "He will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.' "Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”

Q6:

What is the Law, and where did it come from, and what is its purpose?

Page 21: Foundation Stone #1: Repent from Dead Works

Q6: What is the Law, and where did it come from, and what is its purpose?

A6: God, through Moses, gave the famous 10 Commandments, as well as many other detailed laws, to the Jewish people. If they wanted to be righteous, like God, then they must obey every commandment.

R6: Exodus 20:3-17

Page 22: Foundation Stone #1: Repent from Dead Works

Exodus 20:3 "You shall have no other gods before me. 4 "You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything ... You shall not bow down to them or serve them, ... 7 "You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, ... 8 "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, ... 12 "Honor your father and your mother, ... 13 "You shall not murder. 14 "You shall not commit adultery. 15 "You shall not steal. 16 "You shall not (lie) bear false witness against your neighbor. 17 "You shall not covet . . . anything that is your neighbor's.”

Page 23: Foundation Stone #1: Repent from Dead Works

Q7:

Are we all supposed to obey the Law that God, through Moses, gave to the Jews?

Page 24: Foundation Stone #1: Repent from Dead Works

Q7: Are we all supposed to obey the Law that God, through Moses, gave to the Jews?

A7: No, it was only for the Jews and only for a limited time. Later, God let us know that the Law was only an image of what He really wants. The real Law has only 2 parts: Love God. Love people.

R7: Matthew 22:35-40

Page 25: Foundation Stone #1: Repent from Dead Works

Matthew 22:35-40 And one of them, a lawyer, asked him (Jesus) a question to test him. "Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?" And he said to him, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”

Q8:

Hebrews 6:1 mentions, "Repentance from dead works". What are dead works?

Page 27: Foundation Stone #1: Repent from Dead Works

Q8: Hebrews 6:1 mentions, "Repentance from dead works". What are dead works?

A8: Any time we try to do anything to earn a good place with God, it's useless. The Law failed because no one can live without breaking the Law. Our actions can do nothing to bring us back to righteousness in God's eyes. The only thing we can do is accept the free gift by believing in Jesus.

R8: Ephesians 2:1-3,8,9

Page 28: Foundation Stone #1: Repent from Dead Works

Ephesians 2:1-3 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience-- among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. 2:8,9 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

Page 29: Foundation Stone #1: Repent from Dead Works

Q9:

How do we repent from dead works?

Page 30: Foundation Stone #1: Repent from Dead Works

Q9: How do we repent from dead works?

A9: By praying to God, admitting that you are a sinner by birth and by your own actions, apologizing, asking for his forgiveness, promising to try to stop sinning and, if possible, undoing any bad that you've done.

R9: I John 1:8-10 and Luke 19:1-10

Page 31: Foundation Stone #1: Repent from Dead Works

John 1:8-10 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us.

Page 32: Foundation Stone #1: Repent from Dead Works

Luke 19:1-10 Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy. 3 He wanted to see who Jesus was, but because he was short he could not see over the crowd. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way. When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, "Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today." So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly. All the people saw this and began to mutter, "He has gone to be the guest of a sinner." But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, "Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount." Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”

Q10:

What will happen to us if we don't repent?

Page 34: Foundation Stone #1: Repent from Dead Works

Q10: What will happen to us if we don't repent?

A10: The Judgment Day will be a Day of Anger of God towards us. You will have to pay the penalty for all your sins. The price will not be cheap.

R10: Revelation 21:8

Page 35: Foundation Stone #1: Repent from Dead Works

Revelation 21:8 But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars--their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.”

Page 36: Foundation Stone #1: Repent from Dead Works

Q11:

What will happen to us if we do repent?

Page 37: Foundation Stone #1: Repent from Dead Works

Q11: What will happen to us if we do repent?

A11: We will stop trying to earn our own way to God and will accept the way that he has provided. But our faith, we will receive forgiveness, peace, the loving arms of our Father God, and the gift of the Holy Spirit.

R11: Ephesians 2:14-16

Page 38: Foundation Stone #1: Repent from Dead Works

Ephesians 2:14-16 For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility by abolishing the law of commandments expressed in ordinances, that he might create in Himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace, and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby killing the hostility.

Page 39: Foundation Stone #1: Repent from Dead Works

Q12:

What does Jesus expect us to do after we repent?

Page 40: Foundation Stone #1: Repent from Dead Works

Q12: What does Jesus expect us to do after we repent?

A12: Preach repentance and forgiveness of sins to the whole world, in His name. We have received a precious gift, so it's only right that we share it with others.

R12: Luke 24:46,47 and Matthew 28:18-20

Page 41: Foundation Stone #1: Repent from Dead Works

Luke 24:46,47 He told them, "This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

Matthew 28:18-20 And Jesus came to them and spoke to them, saying, All authority has been given unto me in heaven and on earth. You go, therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit: teaching them to do everything I commanded you: and yes, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.
