100% Attendance Awards

Congratulations to our pupils who went on the attendance trip on Thursday 12th July. This was for our 100% attendance pupils and Form 7L1 who were our best attending form this year. We went to the brilliant Brynmawr cinema where we were well looked after and in a change to the advertised film, we saw ‘Patrick’ - a comedy about a very cute pug. Tears were shed and that was just the staff. The pupils’ behaviour was exemplary and they were a credit to themselves, their parents and to Brynmawr School. Well done all from Miss Copik. Can we please remind parents that holidays taken during term-time are only authorised in exceptional services and where not authorised a Fixed Penalty Notice may be issued.

What’s Been Going on in School! Year 6 Transition Week The week commencing 18th June saw the Year 6 pupils from our feeder Primary schools and others in Blaenau Gwent join us for a very busy 5 days in which they were put into their new form groups and sampled some of the lessons they will be having in September.

They completed their CATs on Tuesday or Wednesday, and on Thursday evening Year 6 Parents were invited to the school to meet their child’s Form Tutor, order uniform from Roger’s, Brynmawr and to organise school transport ready for September. It was a very successful evening with a high proportion of parents attending. During Friday pupils were put into their Houses: Caradog, Glyndwr or Llewellyn and were with their House Captains and they took part in several challenges, of a quiz, sporting competitions and a karaoke. Then after lunch they were with their form, getting to know everyone, including their Form Tutor. The pupils thoroughly enjoyed the week and by the end of the Friday many new friendships had been forged.

Throughout the week a selection of our current Year 7 pupils escorted the Year 6 pupils to their lessons and stayed with them during break and lunchtime to help them. They were a tremendous help to us all and myself and Mrs Burns would like to thank them for their contribution to the smooth running of Transition Week.

We hope that Year 6 pupils enjoyed their week with us and we have allied any fears they had about starting “Big School” and can now look forward to starting in September.

Working in Partnership with Costain Job Application Process

In February 2018, 150 Year 9 learners from Brynmawr Foundation School were invited to apply for six notional jobs within Costain:

Civil Engineer

Document Controller

Graphic Designer/Communications

Ground worker

Health & Safety Adviser

Quantity Surveyor As part of their literacy and digital competence skills the students planned their application letter during English lessons. ICT was used to produce the letter along with two CV’s: one, representing the here and now; and another representing where they wanted to be in seven years’ time.

The applications were shortlisted, with all unsuccessful candidates receiving written feedback. 36 of the applicants were invited to interviews at the Project Office, Gilwern. Over three separate sessions that lasted all day, students were interviewed by two professionals currently performing the roles. Costain used this as a valuable opportunity to train their own staff to conduct interviews; many were more nervous than the students!

In June 2018, a Year 9 school assembly took place where the six successful candidates were announced and presented with a certificate and small gift card. All candidates from the interview stage have also received written feedback. The school would like to thank Jeff Mapps and Donna Evans, Costain for their valuable contribution and hospitality at their Project Office. Successful applications were awarded to:

Civil Engineer: Krystian Paciepnik

Document Controller: Mya Durham

Graphic Designer/Communications: Alex Sturdy

Ground worker: Livvi Bevington

Health and Safety Adviser: Robyn Bridge

Quantity Surveyor: Tom Broad

ICE Wales Photography Competition Costain generously gave two of our budding photographers, Ryan Preece and Millie Rees-Woodward, the opportunity to take photographs of the monumental bridge on the A465, Phase 2. The photographs taken by the students will be entered for the ICE Wales Photography Competition. Entries by the Ryan and Millie will be submitted this month. The school would like to thank Jeff Mapps, Public Liaison officer from Costain who made sure Millie and Ryan were safe at all times whilst on the A465 Phase 2 site. Both students wore safety clothing supplied by Costain. Good luck, Millie and Ryan!

STEM workshops with primary schools

On the 16th July, Costain hosted a primary school event at their Project Office at Gilwern. Four of our Year 8 students: Megan Bridge, Hannah Powell, Megan Scammell and Trinity Murphy (pictured left) mentored and guided Year 6 students. The girls worked closely with the primary students and supported the construction of a replica of a suspension bridge. The girls encouraged the students to use problem-solving skills within the disciplines of Physics and Design Technology to complete the task. The final test, would it hold the weight of adults? Yes, it did….well done girls! On the 17th July, three Year 7 students will support and guide another primary school #engineering #stemworkshops.

Welsh Valleys Engineering Project (WVEP) The school has been working very closely with the WVEP, a scheme to

inspire and attract tomorrows’ engineers. The scheme works closely with Royal Society of Engineers, Panasonic, Merthyr and Coleg Gwent Colleges (Ebbw Vale campus) and eight secondary schools. Year 11 students, Morgan Gardner and Alex Jones, were just two of five students to be awarded a Panasonic Trust Future Engineers Award. Following a rigorous application process, Morgan and

Alex, were short listed for the formal interview that took place at Coleg Gwent, Ebbw Vale. This award is accompanied by an attractive bursary that will provide financial assistance to realise their

dreams of going to university to study software engineering. The school would like to take the opportunity to wish Morgan and Alex, the very best of luck with their next chapter of further education.

WVEP: TrustPeice Engineering Workshop In conjunction with WVEP, on 28th June, two Year 7 forms were invited to Abertillery Learning Zone to take part in a STEM workshop. Delivered by TrustPeice, students were grouped into team of six. Infused with physics, Design Technology and computational thinking. Teams had to: plan; construct; and test a complex wind turbine. Materials on hand were: cardboard, paper, wooden sticks, straws, a table gun and hot glue. Students were resilient and never gave up! The winning team’s wind turbine generated a very impressive 1.42 volts of energy!

Year 8 World of Work Day On the 12th June, the school held a World of Work Day for all of Year 8. Using Career Wales’ Employers Business Exchange, the school secured five employers that gave a snapshot of the world of work through their eyes. In sessions of 50 minutes, students were taken through activities, discussion and Q&A sessions. The companies who have up their time to host a workshop were:

Bank of England

Cardiff City Football Club

Costain

Blaenau-Gwent Aspire Apprenticeship Scheme

Tai Calon

Career Wales: Job Match program to match a best fit job to their skills.

The school would like to thank Lesley Smith, Career Wales for her contribution for this event.

BG Aspire Lego Competition On the 27th June, 30 year 8 students competed in a regional final. Their goal was to construct and program a Mindstorm Robot around a complex course. Through guidance from Eden Education, students used computational thinking, numeracy and oracy skills to compete against each other. The winning team that will represent the school in the final:

Charlie Assirati

Megan Bridge

Ethan Harris-Richards

Owen Nash

Hannah Powell

Megan Scammell

Fast forward to the grand final that took place on the 3rd July at Eden Education, Aberbeeg. The school competed against Abertillery Learning Community, Ebbw Fawr Learning Community and Tredegar Comprehensive School. Sadly, they didn’t quite pull off their over ambitious LEGO challenge and were beaten by Abertillery. A quote from one of the judges, “A big thank you to Aspire, it is

fantastic to see how many schools in this area are encouraging their pupils to get interested in engineering. It is a big win for the future of engineering and manufacturing in South Wales. Well done to all the schools who took part, you were all amazing, building the robots, team work and your thought patterns in problem solving”. The school is very proud of the students who used resilience and never gave up. The school would also like to thank BG Aspire for organising this event.

Geography

Dafydd Maund (Year 11) and Tristan Rowlands(Year 10)were this years' winners of the GCSE Geography prize for excellence in homework completion and

attainment. Both pupils received a Greggs Voucher for the value of Ten pounds for completion of over one hundred examination style questions spread over thirty seperate homeworks. This required organisational skills, diligence and application as well the ability to meet constant deadlines. The hard work all of the GCSE Geography pupils this year should be commended as they attempted the new WJEC syllabus for the first time.

Geography Field Trip The geography field trip to Abergavenny was a lovely way to spend a boiling hot summers day. We started off exploring the landscape and history around the Gavenny river. We then measured and tested the speed of flow of the River Gavenny by using plastic balls in order to time how fast they travelled over ten metres. We then took a long walk further up the river and repeated the task there. After this, we had a break in the beautiful Bailey Park, had drinks and a snack and sat down in the shade. We then walked into the town centre to conduct a land use survey. We completed a tally chart of how many different shops, businesses and fast food restaurants were located in Abergavenny. As we were in the town centre, I had dinner with my friends, Olivia, Tia and Macy and we all sat in the sun eating our 'Greggs'. It was Lush. After dinner we then walked down to the castle meadows to draw a cross section of a river meander. This is the best trip I have ever been on and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Imogen Kelly-Murphy. 10G2

The field trip to Abergavenny was very interesting and enjoyable as we had lots of work to do during the day. First of all we visited a flood plain next to the Gavenny River where Tristan and Keegan went in to measure the width and depth of the river. We then walked further up the river to repeat this process to see if the flow rate was higher when you are closer to the river source. We recorded this in a table by measuring the speed of a plastic ball over ten metres. When we were there we also noticed how old the trees were by the roots. We then walked into town and recorded the type of shops that we saw such as retail, charity, fast food, etc... We recorded this into a tally chart during our dinner time when we were allowed to go around on our own. We then met up and walked down to the castle meadows were we drew a landscape picture. We took a group photo and relaxed sat down in the sun. We then got on the bus back to school. Overall, I really enjoyed the day as it was a good balance of being educational and having fun with my friends. Emily Davies 10C2 Geography MAT Pupils Workshops Week commencing 9th July we had an ex-pupil, Gemma Aubrey, who is studying Geography at Queen Mary University, London and is also an ambassador for The Royal Geographical Society, in school to work with some of our Year 7 pupils. Part of Gemma’s role is to share her enthusiasm for the subject of Geography, she did this extremely well with those she worked with during the week. The pupils created posters illustrating hazards of the natural world and all had fun and learnt many new facts about the world

we live in.

MATHS FACULTY

Maths Challenge In April seventy year 7 and 8 students took part in the Junior UKMT Maths Challenge – an individual intriguing multiple choice question paper, which is designed to stimulate interest in maths in large numbers of pupils. The three levels cover the secondary school range 11-18 and together they attract over 650,000 entries from over 4,500 schools and colleges. The charity UKMT is renowned for offering challenges that provide engaging opportunities for students, and the award is incredible recognition for students taking part. Across the year groups, we had 7 awards given to Brynmawr Foundation School, with 5 achieving a bronze award and 2 gaining a silver award. This is a fantastic achievement and the pupils really embraced the challenge and performed well. Some students also showed brilliant dedication by attending the afterschool numeracy club in which they practiced some of the challenge questions and worked in teams so Well done to all the pupils that took part, and we are looking forward to seeing what you can do next year! Silver Awards: Amy Walker (Year 8; Best in Year award

and Best in School award) Luke Heasley (Year 7; Best in Year award)

Bronze Awards: Jamie Boulter (Year 8)

Benjamin Dunlop (Year 8) Jacob Phillips (Year 8) Chloe Burchell (Year 7) Mengji Chen (Year 7)

If you want to get involved with the Maths Challenge next academic year, keep an eye out for the new maths club starting which will include lots of great problem solving activities and games. See Miss Long for more details. Techniquest Trip On Friday 29th June 48 year 7 and 8 students headed to Cardiff Bay for an exciting morning of exploring the magic of maths and taking part in problem solving activities. The students were able to discover the tricks of probability to help win game shows and demonstrated how statistics can be misleading. They questioned whether computers use mathematics to read their mind, and explored binary code with the help of rockets and the power of the number 9. Two of our year 8 pupils even helped to investigate why Houdini was a great topologist as well as an escape artist as they experimented with being tied up. Luckily, they managed to get out of it before the day was over!

Physical Education

We have been fortunate to enjoy possibly the best summer weather for many years and this has resulted in one of our busiest terms of the year – a huge thank you and well done to all our pupils that have taken part in the numerous activities this term and also to their parents/guardians for supporting. The Summer Term began with the very exciting announcement that we are running our first school ski trip, which will take place at Easter 2020 in Waterville Valley & Boston – this is a fantastic opportunity for our current pupils in Year 7-9. There are 56 pupils that are already confirmed on this trip! Working closely with LeisureWorld Travel, we do have the flexibility to add a few extra pupils if there are any that missed out on the original information –

please contact Ms Jay at the school for further details if you are interested in the above. We also said a fond farewell to our Year 11 students and finished their school careers with the Annual Staff vs Students Netball and Rugby games. We are very pleased, and relieved, to announce that the staff more than held their own over the 2 games with a staff win in the netball and a well contested draw in the rugby!

RUGBY It has been another successful term of rugby here at Brynmawr Foundation School. Starting with our Year 7’s first taste of a Rugby 7s competition when they entered the Monmouth Tournament. A great day enjoyed by all our Year 7 team who really stepped up to the mark, playing in a tough group against Bassaleg, Llanishen & Newbridge. Playing some good rugby throughout the group earnt them a well-deserved place in the Quarter Finals of the Plate where they really hit top gear beating a big physical Rougemont side by

6 tries to 3. Onto the semi-final where they played Croesyceiliog and just missed out on a final spot, losing 4 -2 on tries. Year 8 also competed in the Monmouth 7s. Once again we saw ourselves in a tough group and played Monmouth A, St Albans, Bishop of Llandaff, Ysgol Garth Olwg and Bassaleg. Losing 4 and drawing 1 was not enough to progress in the competition. The boys really performed well and represented the school fantastically as they have done all year. In their final 15 a side game of the year they ran out 36-24 winners against Tredegar away with some great skills and big hits on show.

Year 9 have played in two 7s competitions this term, the first was at Newbridge 7s. As they have every year, the boys really enjoyed the day and played great rugby with a win to start against Risca 5 tries to 0, this followed by a draw against St Cenydd 4 all, then 2 losses first against Croesyceiliog 5 tries to 3, then against St Julian’s 4 -3 who went on to win the cup. The second 7s day was again at Monmouth where it was a tough day at the office - our boys not winning a game but coming very close in all they played, against some physical sides. In their group they were Blackwood, Bassaleg, Rougemont, Ysgol Garth Olwg and Tredegar. It was a good and worthwhile experience for our Year 9 boys to play against schools they don’t usually face and really push them as hard as they did. Year 9 also played their last 15 a side game against Tredegar at home, winning 48-44 in their first ever win over our neighbouring school. Once again girls rugby has really been popular with all year groups training and playing in competitive fixtures. Firstly our girls team made their way to West Mon for a festival where they played against West Mon losing 6 - 4, Ebbw Fawr losing 4 -3, Tredegar A winning 6 - 4 and Tredegar B winning 6 - 3.

They then went on to compete in the WRU Cup regional qualifications and showed how much they have progressed by enjoying an action packed day, just missing out on qualifying. On the day they played Bassaleg A lost 3-1, Bassaleg B won 6-0, West Mon lost 4-3 on the last play of the match, Bassaleg C won 4-2 and finally beating Newbridge 3-1. The girls then hosted their own mini festival here at Brynmawr where they played Ebbw Fawr going on to draw 6 all in a very competitive match. They then beat Tredegar 4-3 - again the girls showing great skill and defence to hold on for the win. Also traveling away to play Newbridge and Blackwood where they won 1 and lost 1. Finally their last game of the year was unfortunately a defeat to Tredegar home in tropical conditions! A big congratulation to some of our Year 10 boys who have been selected for the first phase of this coming year’s Dragons 16s, we wish Mason Rowson, Jack Arnold, Hwyel Evans and Rhys Evans all the very best. This term has also seen our school be the first to pilot the new Rugby Leaders Level 2 Award which is run by the WRU. I’m very pleased and proud to say we had 7 young men pass the course with Nigel Way, the coach educator, very complimentary of the knowledge and professionalism our Rugby Leaders showed throughout the course. We finished the year with Inter-House rugby tournaments for boys & girls in each year group within Key Stage 3 – an exceptional number of pupils turned out for each competition and the results are as follows… Year 7 Boys Champions: Caradog Year 7 Girls Champions: Glyndwr Year 8 Boys Champions: Llywelyn Year 8 Girls Champions: Llywelyn

Year 9 Boys Champions: Llywelyn Year 9 Girls Champions: Llywelyn I would like to thank everyone who has taken part in this year’s rugby programme here at Brynmawr Foundation School and hope you have an enjoyable and relaxing summer ready for another big year.

Finally, congratulations to Thomas Snell who is currently ranked number 2 in Wales for his age group in the Javelin … just 15cm behind the number 1! He is also ranked 7th in the shot and 8th in the discus! Others in the Welsh rankings for their age groups are: - Lilly Ball (Javelin) 8th Ffion Prosser (Javelin) 8th Caitlin Madden (200m) 13th SPORTS LEADERS

In addition to playing and performing, our pupils have had, and taken the opportunity to develop their leadership in sport skills whilst gaining recognised qualifications. Nineteen of our current Year 9 pupils have recently completed the 2 day Sports Leaders

Level 1 course and will now start delivering and assisting in a range of sports to young people in communities across the borough. They will be following in the footsteps of the excellent role models they have in our existing Year 10 Sports Leaders who have

recently helped deliver multi-sport and rugby sessions to pupils at St Mary’s Roman Catholic Primary School during their sports week earlier this month. SPORTSDAY Friday 6th July was the date for our annual whole school Sportsday, and for once there were no fears of rain! The day was enjoyed in beautiful sunshine with ice-cream being supplied by our heroes in the school canteen! Too many outstanding performances to mention in this newsletter but there were many School Sportsday records broken. The effort, courage and house spirit displayed by all pupils (and staff!) was outstanding and we are very proud of every pupil that took part and made the day special. After a very well fought battle throughout the day Caradog were crowned Sportsday Champions 2018. CURRICULUM PE Please be advised that from September 2018 ALL PUPILS will be required to wear PE kit during PE/Games lessons unless there are exceptional circumstances. As always, if a pupil is unable to take part due to illness or injury they should bring a note explaining the reason which excuses them from the practical activity. They will still need to change into PE kit so that they can remain involved in the learning through non-physical roles such as

scoring, evaluating, leading etc. which will greatly benefit their development in the subject.

Have a fantastic summer holiday - Be active, Be safe and Enjoy!
