Goya Foods Honored at Hudson County Community College Foundation’s 14th Annual “Holiday Extravaganza” Goya Foods, Inc., America’s largest Hispanic-owned food company, was presented with the Hudson County Community College Foundation’s 2011 Dis-tinguished Community Service Award on Thursday evening, December 1. The award was presented during the Foundation’s 14th Annual “Holiday Ex-travaganza,” held in the College’s Culinary Arts Institute/Conference Center at 161 Newkirk Street in Jersey City.

The Distinguished Community Service Award recognizes individuals and organizations working on behalf of the College and people of Hudson County. Founded in 1936 in Manhattan and now headquartered here in Hudson County, Goya Foods has become the premier source for authentic Latino cuisine. The company is renowned for the family-oriented approach it has taken to its consumers, who comprise La Gran Familia Goya. Active community involvement — particularly with projects that benefit children and families as well as those that promote community wellness and the advancement of His-panic culture — has also long been a hallmark of Goya Foods.

“We are very happy to recognize Goya Foods for the exemplary work they do, especially as they celebrate their 75th anniversary,” said HCCC Vice President for Development Joseph Sansone. He noted that Goya has been a supporter of the Col-lege and other programs that benefit students and their families in Hudson County and throughout the world, and that the company consistently donates food to local food banks and has also taken the lead in disaster relief efforts.

The HCCC Foundation’s Annual “Holiday Extravaganza” is its largest and most festive fundraiser of the year. Proceeds from the event are dedicated to scholarships for deserving students, faculty-development programs, and the physical expansion of the College. The Gala event includes a veritable feast prepared by the chef-instructors and students from the College’s nationally renowned Culinary Arts Institute.

The “Holiday Extravaganza” included the drawing of the annual “Lucky Odds Raffle.” The price of tickets was $50 each, with 50% of the proceeds going towards scholarships and HCCC development endeavors. The remaining 50% was awarded in prizes to winning ticket holders: Grand Prize, 40% of ticket sales; Second Prize, 6% of ticket sales; and Third Prize, 4% of ticket sales.

Established in 1997, the Hudson County Community College Foundation plays an integral

role in the development of HCCC students, the College and the community. The Foundation is dedicated to generating financial support for the College and its students, developing and awarding needs-based and merit scholarships, providing seed money for faculty programs, and providing for the College’s physical growth. Since its founding, the HCCC Foundation has provided scholarships to more than 1,000 students who otherwise might not have been able to pursue a college education.

The Hudson County Community College Foundation gala fundraiser held Thursday evening, December 1, 2011, was a great success. HCCC Vice President for Development Joseph Sansone announced that 150 individuals attended the Foundation’s 14th Annual “Holiday Extravaganza,” which raised approximately $200,000. Proceeds from the event will be utilized for scholarships to deserving students, faculty-development programs, and the physical expansion of the College.

The theme for the event, the Foundation’s largest and most festive fundraiser of the year, was “An Evening in España,” and Goya Foods was presented with the Foundation’s 2011 Distinguished Community Service Award.

This year, the Gala featured a new, very special cocktail hour with hors

d’oeuvres prepared and presented by several Hudson County restaurants and caterers — Boca Grande, Edward’s Steakhouse, Encore Catering, Havana Dulce, La Isla, Liberty House, Michael Anthony’s, Renato’s, Rita and Joe’s, Rumba Cubana and Tejo’s. “Special thanks to everyone who participated in the cocktail hour, especially to HCCC Foundation Board Member Michael Ryan who coordinated several of the restaurants, and to HCCC Foundation Board Member/HCCC Culinary Arts Institute Alumna Lisa Epstein (owner of Encore Catering) and HCCC Chef/Instructor Antonia Mastrella who coordinated the room for the hour. We also wish to thank Goya Foods for providing favors and musical entertainment,” stated Mr. Sansone.

Sales for ads in the event Journal — which contained information on the College’s and the Foundation’s 2011 activities and accomplishments as well as recipes from the College’s Culinary Arts Institute chefs — was

spearheaded by Foundation Board Member Joseph Napolitano, Sr.

The “Holiday Extravaganza” also included the drawing of the annual “Lucky Odds Raffle.” The Grand Prize winner was Cadeo Gibson Wilson; Second Prize went to Michael Ryan, and Third Prize to Paul Silverman. At the event, Foundation Chairman Philip Johnston, President of Johnston Communications Voice & Data, presented the Foundation with a check in the amount of $10,000 for the newly established West Hudson scholarships. Initiated at the Foundation’s “Taste of Fall” fundraiser in October, the West Hudson funds are dedicated to scholarships exclusively for residents of Harrison, East Newark and Kearny.

“We are very grateful to Mr. Johnston and his company for this most generous gift. It more than matches the $6,300 we realized at the ‘Taste of Fall’ fundraiser,” Mr. Sansone said.

This Spring, Hudson County Community College — home of one of the East Coast’s most acclaimed culinary arts studies programs — will resume a subscription dining program that has been established, resulting in scholarships for deserving students.

HCCC Vice President for Development, Joseph Sansone, explained that the membership fee of $995 provides the Subscription Dining Series member with a table-for-four for eight, four-course luncheons on Fridays this Spring.

The menus — which will be planned and prepared by the Executive Chef and a team of culinary professionals who

teach at the College’s renowned Culinary Arts Institute (CAI) — will include soup, appetizer, entrée and dessert courses as well as non-alcoholic beverages. (Beer, wine and cocktails will be available at an additional charge.) All meals will be served by the CAI’s professionally trained student staff in the beautifully appointed Banquet Room of the HCCC Culinary Arts Institute/Conference Center, 161 Newkirk Street in Jersey City — just two blocks from the Journal Square PATH Station.

The Subscription Dining Series dates are Fridays, Feb. 24; March 2, 9, 16; April 13, 20, 27; and May 4 with service from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Each meal will be completely different, and each will be

equivalent to those served in the finest five-star restaurants.

Sansone said the Foundation’s Subscription Dining Series program was conceived and developed after several area business people expressed the desire for more luncheon dining options, especially those where they could take clients and associates.

Complete information and a registration form for the Hudson County Community College Foundation Subscription Dining Series are available by phoning the Foundation Office at (201) 360-4006.

The Hudson County Community College (HCCC) West Hudson Scholarship Committee recently held its first fundraiser, “A Taste of Fall” Food Tasting at HCCC Culinary Arts Institute/Conference Center on Thursday, Oct. 20.

As a result of a recent $50,000 donation by the West Hudson Chapter of the Pioneer Boys and

Girls of America to the College’s Foundation, a first-of-its-kind scholarship program fordeserving students exclusively from the communities of Harrison, East Newark and Kearny was established. The Scholarship Committee, which is comprised of a cross-section of prominent West Hudson residents, business people and municipal leaders, was

subsequently formed to help develop ways to sustain the scholarship funding.

During the event, the West Hudson Scholarship Committee presented one-year scholarships to Darien Rodriguez of Kearny and Luis Castillo of Harrison.

HCCC Receives $5,000 Grant from Verizon to Enhance and Promote Literacy Initiatives

Thanks to Verizon telephone customers in New Jersey who participated in Verizon’s innovative Check Into Literacy Program, the Hudson County Community College Foundation received a $5,000 grant, which will help support the College’s English as a Second Language (ESL) students and help those in Academic Foundations programs acquire and enhance developmental reading skills.

The program allows Verizon landline telephone customers to support literacy by checking a box on their monthly phone bills to make a $1 tax-deductible donation to promote literacy. Verizon then distributes these donations to local literacy

organizations that serve the individual states the customers live in.

“We’re proud to work hand in hand with our customers on this critically important literacy initiative,” said Dennis Bone, president of Verizon New Jersey. “Together we’re helping citizens in New Jersey learn and be successful contributors to our state and nation as a whole.”

The Verizon Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Verizon Communications, supports the advancement of literacy and K-12 education through its free educational website, Verizon

Thinkfinity (www.thinkfinity.org), and fosters awareness and prevention of domestic violence. In 2009, the Verizon Foundation awarded $67.9 million in grants to nonprofit agencies in the U.S. and abroad. It also matched the charitable donations of Verizon employees and retirees, resulting in $26.1 million in combined contributions to nonprofits. Through Verizon Volunteers, one of the nation’s largest employee volunteer programs, Verizon employees and retirees have volunteered more than 5 million hours of community service since 2000. For more information on the foundation, visit www.verizonfoundation.org.

On Thursday, March 24, the Hudson County Community College Foundation held the first lecture in its Artist Talk Series – a group of dialogues designed to enrich the community’s experience of arts in Hudson County. The evening’s lecturer, Jersey City artist Jon Rappleye (pictured at left), discussed his art — filled with fantastic animal and natural imagery — while displaying images of work from his earliest period to the present day, including an original recently finished work.

Rappleye spoke with working artists, student artists, and members of the general public about his influences—including artists like Pieter Brueghel, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and James Ensor. He also talked about the relationships between the natural and the modern world and answered questions about his techniques.

Local Artist Jon Rappleye Speaks at HCCC

The Hudson County Community College Foundation hosted another segment in its Artist Talk Series on Thursday, Nov. 10, 2011. That evening, portrait and classical figurative artist Judy Taylor talked about the 36-foot murals she painted portraying the labor history of Maine.

Born in Nebraska and raised in the Midwest, Ms. Taylor moved to New York City in 1985 and studied at the New York Academy of Figurative Art, where she earned a Master’s Certificate in Advanced Studies. She further pursued these studies in New York under masters such as Harvey Dinnerstein at the National Academy of Design, and then went on to study in Europe. In

1995 Ms. Taylor moved to Mount Desert Island in Maine and established the studio and gallery in Seal Cove that she still operates.

Ms. Taylor’s work may be found in several public and private collections, and thanks to the generos-ity of the Estate of Dr. Arnold Rose, M.D., one of her works is included in the Hudson County Community College Foundation Art Collection.

In 2008, Ms. Taylor was awarded a commission to paint murals depicting the history of Maine labor for that state’s Department of Labor. Controversy about the work arose last spring when Maine Gov. Paul LePage had the murals

removed on the grounds that the work was too one-sided. This was after the Governor reportedly received an anonymous letter saying the work was reminiscent of communist North Korea where “they use these murals to brainwash the masses.”

The eleven-panel work depicts historical scenes such as shoe-making apprentices in Colonial times, Maine lumberjacks, a “Rosie the Riveter” figure at the Bath Iron Works in World War II, and a 1986 paper mill strike. Ms. Taylor has said, “It [the mural] belongs to the people of Maine and needs to be accessible to them.”

HCCC Foundation Permanent Art Collection

The Hudson County Community College Foundation Permanent Art Collection has continued to grow to now more than 200 pieces. Art from the Collection has been installed throughout the College, and a study guide has been prepared in collaboration with the College’s Art Department.

The HCCC Permanent Art Collection has been made possible thanks to the generosity of our Foundation benefactors and others. Please contact Andrea Siegel for more information regarding the Collection at [email protected].

We are grateful to everyone who has supported our students with their donations. In light of the difficult economic times and the funding cutbacks the College has experienced, your generosity is all the more important and appreciated. Thank you again!

Cadeo Gibson Wilson (left) was drawn as the Grand Prize winner of the “Lucky Odds Raffle” at the Foundation’s Annual Extravaganza in December. Cadeo is the son of HCCC Foundation Vice Chair Chanda Gibson, who purchased the ticket on his behalf. He is pictured with HCCC Vice President for Development Joseph Sansone at the brick bearing his name at Culinary Arts Plaza Park (see page 6 for information about the brick project).

The drawing of the Lucky Odds Raffle is one of the evening’s most exciting festivities. Half of the funds raised from the raffle are awarded as Grand, Second and Third prizes, and the other half is used toward scholarships and College development.

The Foundation has been able to fund a Transitional Bridge Program, offered by Hudson County Community College’s Tutorial Services Department, for HCCC students who did not exit Basic Reading, Basic Writing, Basic Mathematics, or Basic Algebra during the previous semester. The program allows students to retest and helps them to make the transition from high school to the college environment.

During the Winter 2011intersession (Jan. 4-19), 90 students participated. Four classes (one Basic Writing class, one Basic Reading class, one Basic Mathematics class, and one Basic Algebra class) were conducted by four instructors (two full-time instructors and two adjunct instructors). Students were re-tested on the last day of the program, making remarkable academic progress. Exit rates for each course were as follows: Basic Writing, 68%; Basic Reading, 79% and Basic Mathematics and Basic Algebra,100%.During the Summer II 2011 session (July 11-Aug. 4), 111 students attended the program. Five classes (two Basic Reading/Writing classes, two Basic

Mathematics classes, and one Basic Algebra class) were conducted by five instructors (two full-time instructors and three adjunct instructors). When students were re-tested on the last day of the program, exit rates were as follows: Basic Reading/Writing, 89%; Basic Mathematics, 85% and Basic Algebra, 100%.

All of these students were able to bypass enrollment in a three-credit, 15-week class and move to college level courses, thereby saving time and costs, contributing to the retention/graduation rates, and building their levels of self-esteem and motivation. The students provided positive feedback regarding the ability to fulfill these requirements. Much appreciation is extended to the TD Bank Foundation and the PNC Bank Foundation, whose grants to the College supported the program.
