Message from the Board:

I am extremely happy to review the activities undertaken during the year 2015-16. Foundation for Initiatives in Development and Education for All strives to create equal opportunities to underprivileged sections of society for their all-round development. The activities undertaken confirm the steps towards achievement of the said goal. During the initial years, focus of the activities were more on enrolling or reenrolling out of school children in mainstream education. Since 2011 youth and Women empowerment

through skill development is also given equal importance. Many Vocational courses and Entrepreneurship Development Programmes were introduced for Women. Skills acquired through Art & Craft and vocational training have improved the employability and livelihood of many women. Holistic approach for all round development of children through academic guidance, sponsorship support, Activity Based Learning Programmes, Counselling sessions, personality development programmes, Exposure visits and career guidance helped students from weaker sections of society to undertake professional courses . Currently IDEA has its presence in 17 communities in and around Pune and 20 villages in Bhor and 6 villages in Raigad district in Maharashtra state in India reaching out to 10,500 children, 3700 youth and 4500 women. The total population covered, directly and indirectly, is about 1,28,000 during FY 2015-16. The success stories indicate the impact of programmes for sustainable development. The special project on Inclusive Education project implemented in Bhor especially shows how the activities like strengthening active participation of SMC and Parents, business activities of self-help groups, art and craft sessions through the creation of local resources have led to sustainability and the programmes introduced are being carried out through community participation. The impact achieved through project activities was remarkable such as the improved infrastructure in schools resulted in better school attendance of children , children’s interest in schooling due to better school facilities, access to computers, sports facilities and other extra-curricular activities . Teachers’ training and provision of teaching materials resulted in improved teaching - learning practices .The life skill sessions resulted in the improved behavioral change and leadership skills among children. Motivation & exposure visits of teachers and School Management Members to innovative schools resulted in their improved involvement in School development. The employability enhancement programmes resulted in 1194 women undertaking training and the income of 591 women improved substantially . All this was possible due to the support of Sir Peter Ustinov Foundation and German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), Tata Communications Ltd., Global Fund for Children (GFC), Give India, Godparents Foundation, Give Foundation USA, Global Giving, Let'z Change Foundation, Symantec Software India Pvt. Ltd., Jindal Foundation, Prorigo Software Pvt. Ltd., Trent Ltd., Social Venture Partners (SVP), and H.T. Parekh Foundation, Caring Friends and many individual donors like Mr & Mrs. Malik, Mr. Prakash Apte, Mr. Nambiar to name a few . Last but not the least, the sincere and dedicated work by the staff was also equally important for the successful implementation of the projects and programmes. I, on behalf of IDEA Board extend my sincere thanks to all the donors, IDEA staff and volunteers for the overall achievement of the organization. Mr. Ashok Budhkar, Board Member

IDEA LEARNING CENTRES

IDEA runs 22 Learning Centers in communities - 22 ‘ Play and Learn centers ‘ catering to children from 1st to 4th standard and 9 ‘Study centers ’ ( in the same premises) catering to children from 5th to 7th standard in Pune, Bhor, Bopkhel and in Jambhulpada. The objective of play and learn centre is to make the education foundation strong and to make learning interesting for small children from marginalised communities. To inculcate regular study habit in bigger children and to assist them in studies, we run study centres, where our teachers help them in their studies, identify their difficulties and give specialised coaching whenever required and also provide career guidance to them. These classes are helpful to reduce the number of school dropouts from these communities.

IDEA conducts annual tests in learning centres and in study centres to measure the academic performance of the students, the results are as shown in the pie chart given below. 43 % children scored above 80% marks and only 6% children scored below 40% marks.

Success Story: ‘Farhan is happy to go back to school‘

The number of children enrolling in primary schools increased after many initiatives by the government of India. But still number of school dropout is shockingly very high. One of the major reasons for school dropout is learning disability, not only in India but also in many developed countries. While continuing the efforts to reduce school dropout ratio, by providing financial help and academic assistance, IDEA also understood the need for looking into other reasons which are also to be considered for increasing the efficiency of its mission. There are different types of learning disabilities. Usually children who are suffering from some kind of learning disabilities are often misunderstood and labeled as lazy, naughty, useless..etc. It is often difficult for the parents and teachers to understand the exact reason behind the poor performance of the child. Farhan is also a victim of such a problem. He hails from a poor family in Pune. Though he was attending a nearby school irregularly, his teachers were always complaining about his poor academic performance and so he had lost interest in studies and in school. The parents approached IDEA for help.

Farhan is attending IDEA study centre since last 3 years and his parents enrolled him in another school as we suggested. The study centre teacher had received special training in learning disabilities and Remedial Education, so she could easily understand that Farhan has some learning disability. So she suggested his parents to take Farhan for an IQ Test by a professional. Farhan and his mother were counseled by the professional. His parents now keep expectations as per his IQ. The IDEA teacher continues to give him remedial education. In the new school the teachers are informed about his problems. Farhan is very happy to go to school now as the teachers are able to understand his problems . Reported By Ms. Anjali Katole

Highlights

Congratulations to all children under the sponsorship programme who appeared for 10th and 12th board examinations this year. They really made us proud. The results are as follows:

12th standard - Total 29 children appeared and 26 passed with good marks. 4 children scored more than 70 %, 8 children scored between 60% to 70 %. Preethi Shinde who scored 88.6% marks is the topper among them.

10th standard - Total 26 children appeared for the final examination and 24 passed. 3 children scored more than 70 %, 8 children scored between 60% to 70%. Prachi Kapse scored 79.80 % and Ashiwini Kokate Scored 74.6%.

Two girl students are good kabbadi players. Ms. Pratiksha Nivangune who is 11th standard played in District level kabbadi competition and Ms. Swati Khandare played state level matches in Kabbadi. Both are working really hard to be in National level matches. Our sponsorship support is always a great help to motivate such students.

Success story:

‘Shubham on a right path to progress’

It is always a pleasure to introduce gifted children under our sponsorship programme who really work hard to make use of the opportunity they got. Shubham is such a student. He is very sincere in studies and other extra-curricular activities. He is now 17 years old and pursuing 11th standard. In 10th he scored 86% of marks. He actively participates in all the activities conducted by IDEA, like exposure visits, summer camps, Art and craft sessions, vocational classes, youth group meetings, Career Guidance sessions, spoken English classes..etc

He received a bicycle from Tata Communications Ltd during global campus induction programme for their employees as a token of excellence in studies. It really helps him to commute by bicycle as he really needed to save some time for studies.

Shubham stays with his family in a rented house in Ramnagar. His divorced mother takes care of him and his two younger sisters by doing domestic work. But her minimal wages are not enough to support the educational needs of the children. She is thankful to IDEA for enabling her son to study further with our sponsorship support. It is his dream to become an engineer and support the family. IDEA wishes him al the best for his future Endeavour.

SKILL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMES

IDEA runs an employability enhancement programme where youth and young women are imparted vocational training and life skill sessions. We are successfully conducting different courses under vocational training such as Beautician course, Tailoring classes, Fashion Designing and Computer courses. The course duration varies from 3 to 6 months. Along with these courses all the participants are imparted life skill classes and ‘spoken English classes’ as per their requirement. This year we have introduced a new course for cooking and catering, called ‘Home Chef’. After successful completion of the course IDEA guides and supports the students for getting a job or for self- employment.

Success Stories: Computer literacy for girls:

Before joining IDEA, the life of Suvarna was not different from any other typical middle class housewife. She had completed graduation with full of enthusiasm and hopes to make use of her talents and education. But soon she got married and took up family responsibilities. It became very difficult for her to follow her dreams. When IDEA Foundation introduced basic computer course in her community she was very keen to learn computers. She completed the course successfully in 2 months. Now she can use

computers and smart phones with ease and mange to send emails and do online ticket bookings. She is really proud to be able to help her family when it is really important to know basics of computers to live in this technologically advanced society.

Beautician Course:

Some people are born entrepreneurs. And the story of Manisha is just like that. Manisha belongs to a Maharashtrian conservative family, her parents preferred to have sons, but instead they got 5 girls including Manisha. But still, Manisha managed to study till 10th standard. Though she was good in studies, she had to leave her studies as her parents fixed her marriage at an early age. Soon she became a mother of two. But still she was very enthusiastic to learn new skills and to stand on her own feet, so she joined IDEA to work as teacher for young children in the learning centre. When she came to know about the skill development programmes conducted by IDEA , she joined the tailoring course. After completing the tailoring course she got real confidence in her abilities and joined beautician course too. That too she completed successfully in time. She also attended various exposure visits and the soft skill sessions during her course. These sessions motivated her to start her own business rather than looking out for a job. IDEA supported her with a beauty kit and parlour chair. Today

Manisha is the proud owner of a beauty parlour and ladies shopping centre in her community. She also makes money by stitching clothes. IDEA is really proud to have helped her to achieve her potentials. Reported by Ms. Anita Chalwadi

Manisha in her Beautyparlour cum lady’s shoppe

Art and Craft Classes: Art and craft classes are held once / twice weekly and during holidays for adolescents and young women. Jewelry making, embroidery work, ceramic painting and making seasonal items like Diwali lantern, lamps, ’rakhi’, paper bag making etc and other skills as per the demand in the market are taught to the participants . IDEA regularly participates in NGO fairs / exhibitions which are good platform for the women to display and sell their products. It helps them to earn a supplementary income for their family.

Success Stories – Anganwadi Renovation in Bopkhel The Bopkhel community has 4 Anganwadis which are run by Woman and Child Development Department under ICDS programme. These centres provide outreach services to poor families in need of immunization, healthy food, clean water, clean toilets and a learning environment for infants, toddlers and pre-schoolers. However it was observed during the survey of Umang project that the infrastructure of the place where these Anganwadis were run

was in very bad condition. The passage was dirtied by the stray domestic animals since there were no barricades on safety wall. The plinth of the school passage was also little high for the small children and it was unsafe for the children. It was also noted that the basic facilities like toilets and water were not available for these Anganwadis. Due to limitation of funds from the ICDS, the Anganwadis were facing inadequacy of education and play material. Although the Anganwadi staff and helpers were working dedicatedly, non-satisfaction amongst staff & parents of the children was prevalent. This

was affecting the teaching & enrolment of the children in Anganwadi. The supervisor of these Angawadis and Tarun Mandal (local youth group) approached UMNAG project team requesting provision of play and educational material. They also requested us to take up the infrastructure development of these Anganwadis especially the toilet construction. The mandal assured their participation. IDEA decided to intervene and undertake the infrastructural development of these Anganwadis. Through UMANG project safety grills, wash basins, water tank, tap facility and toilets for the Anganwadis at Bopkhel community were provided. The water connection for the same was provided by the efforts of local mandal. Similarly indoor and outdoor play material like swing, slide, tricycle, see-saw, basketball, modeling clay, pyramid puzzles and education material like plastic animals vegetables, number puzzles, charts etc. were also given according to the need of the Anganwadi. This has helped in creating conducive environment in the Anganwadi and making learning more fun based. The supervisor of these Anganwadi expressed her gratitude to UMANG project and stated that within 2 months of completion of the development work the enrolment of these Anganwadi has increased remarkably. The teachers also expressed that due to this facilitation they are able to deliver qualitative teaching and effective learning for overall development of their Anganwadi children. The parents of Anganwadi children also seem to be happy, since now they find the Anganwadi environment more healthy and safe. As assured, the maintenance of the infrastructure is taken care by Anganwadi and the local leader from the community. This has ensured the sustainability of the activity which is a mark of success achieved thorough participation and ownership by the community. Reported By Ms.Manjusha Pandit

B.Interventions under Employability :

IDEA believes to make a deep, self-sustaining impact in the lives of female members of the family. It is crucial to provide them opportunities to receive education and earn income. Life in the developing world often necessitates short-term, day-to-day thinking, such as: “how will I pay for food tomorrow?” These precarious conditions make it difficult for women to plan for the future and, in turn, limit their ability to be the agents of change in their communities. Earning steady income enables our participants to provide for themselves and their families; to save for their children’s education; to invest in new businesses; and to become empowered decision-makers in their households.

Under the umbrella of economic empowerment, various vocational courses such as basic and advanced tailoring classes, basic and advanced beautician course, bag making, art and craft etc. are being conducted at Bopkhel, Ramnagar, Dighi and Vishrantwadi centres. The courses are basically for the marginalized section of the society. After successful completion, these courses have opened the doors for income generation for many women. Courses started under this project are listed below

(1) Tailoring – Basic and Advanced level (2) Paper Bag making (3) Beautician course- Basic and Advance level (4) NDLM course

Through our Skill development programmes, expert training institute MITCON guided women on banking accounts, loans, personality development and all legal issues related to starting small scale businesses. They conducted 6 days training in all 4 communities’ viz. Bopkhel, Ramnagar, Dighi & Shantinagar.

Success Stories NDLM Centre

Under Umang project IDEA Foundation initiated its first NDLM Centre at Bopkhel in collaboration with Tata Communications. NDLM Centre started its 2 months computer basics course with 5 batches on 20th August 2015. NDLM is a dream project carried out by Central government , under this scheme Government aims to achieve computer literacy of at least one person in every household in India. We received very good response for Basic Computer course started under NDLM Project. The technical support is provided by NASSCOM.

Till March 2015, 129 students got enrolled. Students are from all age groups and all are females. Even their educational and family backgrounds differ. Some of them have not completed school education, some are school going students and very few are graduates. But still they all were equally eager to learn new technologies and thoroughly enjoyed the learning process.

Preparing them for the assessment was a herculean task for IDEA staff, from the technical point of view and from the student’s perspective. The online exam was a big challenge for us, as there were many technical hitches to be faced but we got good support from NASSCOM.

Total 83 Students got validated (Aadhar card validation) and till end of March 2016, 67 students appeared for online examination. We are very proud to declare that 64 have cleared the examinations.

Other Activities under Umang Project Exposure visits were organized to ICICI Foundation and “Home chef” course at Kothrud. Awareness sessions were conducted on opportunities for employability. Health & sanitary hygiene awareness sessions for women in the communities were also organised.24 sessions on personality and health related topics were covered. We could reach out to1243 women through these awareness programmes.

Mrs. Bharati had completed 10th standard , but could not study further because of family responsibilities. In our NDLM centre she has learnt to operate computer and Internet confidently. She is thankful to IDEA for providing such an opportunity for women like her. Now she is using internet to help her child in studies. She can use computer now for downloading valuable information for herself as well as for her child. She is interested in learning more about computer .

Mrs. Yogita has expressed her opinion that she has benefited by IDEA NDLM computer course. She could get a lot of information from websites and it also helped her to apply for her son’s college admission online. Cyber awareness programmes helped her to understand the positive and negative sides of using internet by children. She is thankful to IDEA Foundation for giving her an opportunity to learn about computers

Mrs.Prerana is 12th pass. After completing the computer course at IDEA centre she is able to use computer for online banking, online payments of bills, and for searching information for further studies

Project Utkarsh

IDEA Foundation started the Utkarsh project on 1ST November 2015 in Raigad district and it is funded by H.T. Parekh Foundation. The project covers nearly 5 hamlets of the Katkari tribe situated 2 kms to 7 kms away from the surrounding of Jambhulpada village, in the ‘Tahasil Sudhagad’, which is on the distance of 150 kms from Mumbai, 120 kms from Pune and just 20 kms from Khopoli, the industrial town on the old Mumbai-Pune road. They are far away from the developed modern life of the cities.

The Katkaris are identified as a primitive tribe and people here are dwelling in a very underdeveloped stage. Basic amenities like domestic electricity, proper roads and sometimes even drinking water have not reached to some of the Katkari hamlets.

Utkarsh Project aims at Community Development predominantly through educational and skill training interventions for children, youths and adults. Main strategy which we adopted for the implementation of this project is of people’s involvement and participation. We are covering a population of 2100 people from 354 families.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT A CASE STUDY Living with dignity is important for these girls! Chanda is a 12 year old girl belongs to Katkari community near Jambhulpada. Chanda’s parents migrated to Karnataka state to work in a coal mine, leaving behind their children to manage themselves. Chanda is in 6th standard living with her elder sister Manda (15 yrs) and Mahesh (9 yrs) in the community in a single room house. She studied in the same community primary school upto 4th standard and in 5th standard she joined a middle school, one and half kilometres away from the community. She goes to school by walking. She is regular in school and her academic performance is also good. Her house is in a dilapidated condition. There is no proper roof. In rainy days it is very difficult for the family to keep themselves safe and dry. Other than a few household materials the house is practically empty. We saw some cloths hanging on a rope and few containers for the storage of water. The children prepare food on a Chula outside the house. There is no proper bathroom or toilet. In the absence of parents Chanda and Manda work part time in a Brick kiln to meet the family expenses before their school hours and full day on holidays. They get Rs.200 /- per day. They do all the household work like cooking, sweeping, washing clothes, purchasing grocery etc. Chanda told us that even after all these, she and her siblings go to school regularly. They take midday meal in school and prepare food in the evening at home for dinner. On holidays they have to prepare food for both meals. Their parents give Rs.2500 to Rs.3000/- for household expenses for six months. Parents only come during Holi festival and in rainy season. In rainy season they do farming work in the Hamlet for cultivating rice. AND THEIR LIFE GOES ON………..

Project Samarth

After the completion of the Project "Inclusion Education for socially disadvantaged People ” in Bhor block of Pune district, IDEA is continuing the educational and community interventions in some of the most deprived schools and communities therewith the support of Sir Peter Ustinov Foundation, under the name Project Samarth. The project covers two villages, three slums and 5 schools in Bhor Block, Pune district, in Maharashtra .

The project objectives are :-

1. To improve attendance of children in schools and to create interest in studies in them 2. To improve the academic performance of children 3. To motivate parents in educating their children 4. To impart skill based training to youth based on their aptitude 5. To impart vocational training to women to earn better income

150 children are getting guidance and support from IDEA study centres, located in slums and communities. We also work with children from 5 schools, three Nagarpalika Schools and two Zilla Parishad Schools in Anantnagar and Kasurdi. In addition to regular classes, we provide remedial education for children with learning disabilities. We have two qualified special educators who take care of the special need children.

200 women from these communities and slums are getting trained in our skill development programs. We conduct tailoring classes, beauty parlour course and regular Art and craft classes for increasing the employability of these women.

Success Story- Sakshi goes to school.. The IDEA Foundation study centre at Indiranagar community is running successfully from the last 3 years. Many children from backward community are enrolled in this centre. Sakshi, belongs to a very poor family where education of the children was not given priority. For children from her community, it is very difficult to continue education because of frequent migration of their families in search of job. Sakshi could not attend regular school and so she was far behind in academics and so was not much interested in attending schools. When IDEA started this study centre in Indira Nagar, we enrolled her in 5th standard in a nearby school and motivated her to attend regular school with our educational support. Her parents were also given awareness about the importance of education. With IDEA sponsorship program, they could afford to send her to school and they have decided to

educate all their 4 children at least till 12th. She is coming to IDEA study centre regularly since last 1 year. She likes to participate in various activities conducted in our centre and she is also given remedial coaching. Her parents are grateful to IDEA for supporting them with child’s educational needs. VOLUNTEER SPEAKS: An email from Ketaki S Natekar Dear Sir/ Ma'am, It feels warm as ever, every time the monthly edition of Samvad drops in my mailbox. The copy, full to the brim with the activities of IDEA is overwhelming. Last year, during this time, I was engaged in a month long internship with IDEA. The experiences of that engagement are still cherished. The freedom and flexibility of work that IDEA offers and the forward looking approach that it maintains is worth appreciation. IDEA is one of the few organisations that I know which thought of utilizing psycho therapeutic counselling to treat behavioural and emotional issues, such issues are mostly ignored and professional help undermined. The recent schedules and newly joined work kept me from writing to you for a long time. However, I really want to thank IDEA for all the experiences and learning it gave me.

Along with it, I want to wish the organisation my best in the further activities that it undertakes. I currently work with the State government on Maharashtra State Rural Livelihoods Mission, the mission aims at alleviating the rural poor out of poverty through sustainable livelihood alternatives. Should I be of any help to IDEA in future, I would be glad to put in my best. Lots of Love and Luck, Warm Regards, Ketaki S. Natekar
