Pennsylvania Highlands Community College Foundation is committed to raising

funds that provide significant assistance to the College and its students. The

Foundation continues to build assets through work that includes augmenting the

number of endowed scholarships available to our students, identifying grant

opportunities that align with the College’s strategic plan, and increasing giving in

our annual campaign. The Board believes that these strategies will establish the

Pennsylvania Highlands Foundation as a leader in providing improved and

enhanced educational opportunities throughout the Southern Alleghenies.

The Foundation acts as the administrator of the Educa-

tional Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program operat-

ed by the College. In 2016-2017, the Foundation re-

ceived $18,750 in EITC donations from local businesses.

These contributions support the Accelerated College

Education (ACE) program, allowing high school stu-

dents to earn college credits in advance of their high

school graduation. EITC contributions allow the cost of

the courses to be reduced, making this an affordable

opportunity for students to experience college level

classes while still in the high school classroom. The ACE

program operates in more than 50 partnering school

districts serving over 1,200 students across Pennsylvania

and is accredited by the National Alliance of Concur-

rent Enrollment Partnerships (NACEP). Such innovative

educational programs are just one of the benefits that

a community college can provide to local students.

The Pennsylvania Highlands Community College Foundation continues to grow achieving over $1.1 million in

assets at the end of the 2016-17 fiscal year. These assets were garnered through annual campaign donations,

special fundraising events, and the continual development of scholarship funds. As of the June 30, 2017

preliminary unaudited financial statements, the approximate total assets of the Foundation are $1,151,582

and total support and revenue generated in the fiscal year is $255,456.

The Foundation has completed its annual campaign for this fiscal year and is pleased to report more than

$40,000 raised. This year’s pledges and donations were received from local businesses, community residents,

faculty, staff, and board members.

In the 2016-2017 academic year, $33,396 in funds were

awarded to 80 deserving students who met the

guidelines of the scholarships administered by the

Foundation. The Foundation currently manages 22

scholarships, with over 50% of these scholarships created

in the past 6 years as the Foundation continues to build

relationships with individuals and businesses within our

region. The Foundation brought in $18,499 in scholarship

funding in 2016-2017. As the number of funds have

increased over the past few years and will continue to do

so through growth at our regional locations, the

Foundation and College have implemented an online

scholarship management system to better organize,

track, award, and market all scholarships.

The Pennsylvania Highlands College Employee Supported

Scholarship was established through the governance

structure by the College Senate on October 27, 2016.

Employees donate to this scholarship through a monthly

“Jeans Day” donation along with directed donations in

the annual campaign. Through their generosity, the first

recipient of the scholarship will be awarded in the fall of

2017.

The Foundation hosted two fundraising events this year, generating nearly $20,000. These events brought a

diverse group of more than 250 individuals to the College’s Richland Campus. The Foundation strives to keep

the costs low for attendees to allow for more

community, employee, and alumni participation.

The proceeds from our 2016 Corks & Kegs event

was used for the creation of the Kathy Holtzman

Memorial Scholarship. As a former Cambria

County Commissioner and member of the

College’s Board of Trustees, Ms. Holtzman was an

integral part in the development of the

community college from its inception through the

20th anniversary. In association with Kathy’s

family, the Foundation created an endowed

scholarship in her memory to recognize her

support of educational opportunities for all

members of our community.

Penn Highlands is proud to host the only One Book One Community program in the area. The Foundation

works with coordinator, Dr. Barbara Zaborowski, the College’s Dean of Learning Resources, to locate funding

for this project. More than 1,200 middle school students, teachers,

and parents participated in the 2017 program centered around the

book “The King of Mulberry Street” by Donna Jo Napoli. The students

participated in educational sessions including a reenactment of

entering Ellis Island, life in a tenement, learning about the Statue of

Liberty, making ice cream, decorating eggs, playing dominos, and

a performance from the Johnstown Youth Symphony. The program

has learning outcomes each year centered on the program’s

theme, relation to Pennsylvania history, and world events. A

significant amount of the $3,810 in donations received were made by College employees and the College

itself donated the use of its building and the volunteer time of over 40 College employees.
