THE RCIA—PAST AND FUTURE
As was the case with Confirmation for our Religious Education eighth graders and First Communion for our second graders, the Sacraments of Initiation for our Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults participants this past year had to be postponed. It should have taken place at the great Easter Vigil on April 11th—which itself never took place. So, this Sunday at 10:30 Mass, I’ll have the privilege of confirming Damian Nava and Mayela
Guerrero. Both of them were already baptized as infants and made their First Communion, but Confirmation slipped through the cracks along the way. However, they were extraor-dinarily faithful and involved participants in the weekly RCIA sessions until mid-March when everything changed. So it’s a joy to welcome them and their families today as they take this next step of their faith journey with us.
And speaking of the RCIA….After a month, I’m still waiting for a reply from the Office for Divine Worship as to their rec-ommendations for how we might conduct the program this year for those who wish to become members of the Church or complete their Christian initiation. Normally, I would have cre-ated the schedule and published it here in the bulletin, but I’m not sure what we can or cannot do. The wonderful fact is that we already have three people who have expressed an interest in participating in the weekly sessions and I certainly don’t want to keep them waiting forever. The thing is that the dy-namic of this program requires a good deal of conversation; it’s not just one person lecturing for one or two hours; and even if it were that way, I know that I certainly can’t talk through a mask for more than a few minutes! However, one thing that is likely whenever and however we do begin is that, because of social distancing requirements, we won’t be able to invite oth-ers who wish to attend for their own updating. At any rate, “watch this space” for future updates.
In the meantime, please keep Damian and Mayela in your prayers; and pray, too, that we’ll be able to begin this year’s RCIA sessions soon and that we’ll actually be able to celebrate the Sacraments of Initiation at the great Easter Vigil on April 3rd next year!

It is time for the Quarterly Food Drive for Catholic Charities Food Pantry. Do you know there are people living near you who are food insecure? They do not know where their next meal will come from or how long un-til their next meal. They may be seniors, children, working adults. Your generosity helps stop the hunger of many people in the south suburbs, your neighbors. The Pantry is located at St. Iraneus Parish and distrib-utes hundreds of bags of food each month.
The collection will be next Saturday, September 26th, 9am – noon. Pull into the north parking lot, pop the trunk, and our volunteers will unload the food. All nonperishable foods are needed. If you would prefer to make a donation of cash or check (payable to Catholic Charities), give it to the volunteer collecting the food. It will be put to good use at the pantry. Thanks for your continued kindness and assistance.
GOLDEN WEDDING ANNIVERSARY
The Golden Wedding Anniversary Mass was cancelled this year to
better ensure the health and safety of all involved during this COVID-
19 pandemic. While it is not possible for an in-person celebration
this year, we cannot overlook the deep need to honor them in their
commitment to the sacrament of marriage. Registration can be done
by clicking here. Cardinal Cupich will be recording a video of con-
gratulations that will be distributed to the Jubilarians via email. In
addition, the Office of Lifelong Formation will issue a certificate in
honor of the jubilarians to be sent to their physical home address.

We cannot truly be compassionate
to others unless we first are
compassionate with ourselves. It
is a hard truth, but it is a truth we
need to acknowledge and thus
begin the work of self-awareness,
self-acceptance, and self-love. It
is only from that vantage point
that we can genuinely do the work
we are meant to do. The world

Gospel Meditation 25rthSunday
in Ordinary Time
If I work for five
hours, I expect to get
paid for five hours. If I
work for two, I expect
to get paid for two.
What if we worked for
a company that paid
everyone the same
amount regardless of
how long they
worked? How would we feel going home with the same pay for working
eight hours as my co-worker did for working only two hours? Secular wis-
dom would have a huge problem with this and a visit to the Labor Board
would quickly pursue. But this is God‘s wisdom and God‘s ways.
We sometimes think that if we pray more, better, or more fervently and
go over and above with the practice of our faith, God will somehow re-
ward us and present us with some kind of merit badge. We are so wrong.
Spiritual practices have only one true purpose: to deepen our love for
God. In deepening our love for God, we also increase our ability to see
God‘s presence around us, living life more purposefully and contempla-
tively. What if God chooses to treat someone who has come on the
scene of faith later in life the same as someone who has devoted their
whole lives to it? Does it really matter? If we have the merit badge notion
of faith, we can find ourselves feeling a little arrogant and even jealous
of folks who have not followed the same path that we have. We can even
see ourselves as the privileged few who have a corner on the faith and
fully possess it.
That thinking doesn‘t square with God. God is all about mercy in abun-
dance and is ready to take anyone to himself regardless of when they
come. He is only happy that they have come home and delights in their
return. After all, if you really and truly love someone, does it matter what
they will give you in return or what you receive as a benefit? If relation-
ships were assessed based upon productivity, they would lack authentic
love. We invest too much self interest in our prayer and neglect to see it
as an opportunity to pursue our Lover and deepen the intimate bond we
have with God.
When we breathe our last, all that is of consequence is union with God.
If my love for God is real, I am going to want to live the Gospel, abide by
the commandments, practice my faith, forgive and love my neighbor,
and care for the environment, regardless of how much time it takes or
benefits me. We want God to think and behave as we do, and in doing
so, we set ourselves up for disappointment. God has a totally different
agenda and that‘s okay. ©LPi

Mass Registration Mass Registration Mass Registration
As more people return to weekend Mass and as the weather
gets colder, it will become more important to sign up, either
online or by calling the rectory by noon on Fridays. Those who
come to Mass without signing up can create a long line be-
hind them as their name and phone number are written
down by the greeter, causing their fellow parishioners to
stand out in the cold, or even in the rain—and eventually, the
snow. And if we begin to reach our current maximum capacity
of 135 at each weekend Mass, those who have not signed up
might be asked to leave, which would be unfortunate but
necessary. You‘ll be informed if any of these requirements
change in the future.

ST. JOSEPH’S RELIGIOST. JOSEPH’S RELIGIOST. JOSEPH’S RELIGIOUS EDUCATIONUS EDUCATIONUS EDUCATION The archdiocese has advised religious education programs to develop the capacity to offer classes in both vir-
tual and in-person formats. To do this we need catechists who can teach both virtual classes or 'at-home for-mation' and in-person classes. For in-person classes to be executed safely we need a new cadre of volunteers to
monitor safety measures such as so-cial distancing upon entry/exit and in the hallways, and that all persons in the school building are wearing masks. Catechists and other volun-
teers associated with the religious education program must complete archdiocese compliance require-ments including Virtus training, man-dated reporter training, and a back-
ground check. If you can help in any way please contact Karen Shifflett at [email protected] or 708-

Pope Francis Names Three
New Auxiliary Bishops for the
Archdiocese of Chicago
The Vatican announced that Pope
Francis has appointed three new aux-
iliary bishops for the Archdiocese of Chicago: Bishops-elect Kevin
M. Birmingham, Jeffrey S. Grob and Robert J. Lombardo, CFR.
The episcopal ordination of the bishops-elect will take place on
the feast of St. Francis Xavier Cabrini, November 13, 2020.
―We are grateful to the Holy Father for the gift of these new auxil-
iary bishops,‖ said Cardinal Blase J. Cupich, archbishop of Chi-
cago. ―Each of these fine priests has made a unique contribution
to the life of the church and society, yet they share in common a
solid record of pastoral service, fidelity to the Gospel and inspiring
personal witness.‖ Read More >

Catechetical Sunday
CELEBRATING CATECHETICAL SUNDAY 2020 By: Marilyn Santos, Associate Director, Secretariat of Evangelization and Catechesis, USCCB
The new Directory for Catechesis clearly confirms the relationship between evangelization and catechesis, one
simply cannot exist without the other. From the initial encounter to ongoing formation and growth of faith it is
most effective and leads to ongoing conversion when approached from the heart as a missionary disciple.
This year, the Church will celebrate Catechetical Sunday on September 20, 2020. The 2020 theme is I re-
ceived from the Lord what I also handed on to you. Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on
the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel.
Catechetical Sunday is an opportunity for all to rededicate themselves to this mission as a community of faith.
The 2020 Catechetical Sunday theme is taken from St. Paul‘s first letter to the Corinthians. This theme fo-
cuses on the essential work of catechesis, which is an invitation to a whole new life given by Christ Himself. It
emphasizes that living faith necessitates movement, inspiring all those who hear the Word to share it as wit-
nesses of the true and living God. In his message for Catechetical Sunday, Bishop Robert Barron, Chairman of
the Committee of Evangelization and Catechesis writes: ―This year, we also invite everyone who is involved in
the work of catechesis to consider earnestly the importance of catechist formation. Since catechists are the
instruments through which many come to encounter Christ and hear this invitation, they have a unique role in
keeping people connected to the life of the parish. The new Directory for Catechesis describes the following
goal of catechist formation: ‗making catechists aware that as baptized persons they are true missionary disci-
ples, meaning active participants in evangelization, and on this basis are enabled by the Church to communi-
cate the Gospel and to accompany and educate believers in the faith‘ (DFC 132). Therefore, catechists must
first be accompanied by their pastors and catechetical leaders to encounter Christ, in order to facilitate en-
counters with Christ for others.‖
Please visit our Catechetical Sunday webpage for a variety of articles, video resources, new prayer cards, litur-
gical resources, the year‘s image and its catechesis. New resources will be uploaded periodically through the
end of the year.
Continued blessings.
A Prayer for Catechists
Loving Father, we pray today for our catechists. We thank you for their gift of ministry in your Church.
Grant them your wisdom that they may grow in the understanding and teaching of your Word.
Grant them also your love that they may be fruitful heralds of your Word and lead others to love you.
Pour forth your Holy Spirit upon them to grant them wisdom about what is important; knowledge of the
truths of faith; understanding of their meaning; right judgment about how to apply them in life; courage to
persevere even in the face of adversity; reverence before all that is sacred and holy; and that loving zeal
which leads others to a transforming encounter with your Son.
We pray this through Christ, our Lord. Amen

―Catechesis is an ecclesial act, arising from the missionary mandate of the Lord (cf. Mt 28:19-20) and aimed, as its very name indicates, at making the proclamation of his passion, death and resurrection continually resound in
the heart of every person, so that his life may be transformed. A dynamic and complex reality at the service of the Word of God, it is accompaniment, education, and formation in the faith and for the faith, an introduction to the
celebration of the Mystery, illumination and interpretation of human life and history. By harmoniously integrating these characteristics, catechesis expresses the richness of its essence and offers its specific contribution to the
pastoral mission of the Church.‖ Directory for Catechesis #55

Today’s Readings TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Sunday, September 20, 2020
First Reading: Isaiah 55:6-9
God's ways are far beyond the ways of human beings.
Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 145:2-3,8-9,17-18
God is near to those who call upon him.
Second Reading: Philippians 1:20c-24,27a
Paul tells the Philippians to live for Christ.
Gospel Reading: Matthew 20:1-16
In the parable of the workers in the vineyard, Jesus
teaches about God's generous mercy.
BACKGROUND ON THE GOSPEL READING In today's Gospel, Jesus moves from Galilee to teach in Judea where he is sought out by great crowds and
tested by the Pharisees on issues such as marriage and divorce. Jesus also encounters a rich young man
who is unable to accept Jesus' demand that he leave his possessions to follow him. Jesus' response to the
rich young man sounds very much like the conclusion we will find in today's Gospel: the first will be last and
the last will be first.
On the surface, the parable of the workers in the vineyard appears to be an offense to common sense. Those
who work a longer day ought to be paid more than those who work just an hour or two. When viewed in this
way, the landowner seems unfair. That is because we are reading into the parable our own preconceived no-
tions of how fairness and equality should be quantified.
A close read shows us that the landowner paid on the terms that were negotiated. The landowner, it seems,
has acted completely justly. The parable goes beyond that, however, and we come to see that the landowner
is not simply just, he is exceptionally just. He is radically just. He has given those who labored in the field for
a full day their due pay. But he has also given a full-day's wage to those who worked only a single hour. No
one is cheated, but a few receive abundantly from the landowner just as we receive from God more than
what is merely justifiable or due. God, like the landowner, is radically just and abundantly generous. The
workers who complain are made to look foolish as they lament the fact that landowner has made all workers
equal. Indeed, what more could one ask for than to be treated as an equal at work or anywhere else?
The parable reminds us that although God owes us nothing, he offers abundantly and equally. We are occa-
sionally tempted to think that our own actions deserve more reward, more of God's abundant mercy, than the
actions of others. But God's generosity cannot be quantified or partitioned into different amounts for differ-
ent people. When we think that way, we are trying to relate to God on our terms rather than to accept God's
radically different ways.

Growing with the Gospel
Jesus told his disciples this parable: ―The kingdom of heaven is like a land-
owner who went out at dawn to hire laborers for his vineyard. After agreeing
with them for the usual daily wage, he sent them into his vineyard. Going out
about nine o‘clock, the landowner saw others standing idle in the market-place, and he said to them, ‗You too go into my vineyard, and I will give you
what is just.‘ So they went off. And he went out again around noon, and
around three o‘clock, and did likewise. Going out about five o‘clock, the land-
owner found others standing around, and said to them, ‗Why do you stand
here idle all day?‘ They answered, ‗Because no one has hired us.‘ He said to
them, ‗You too go into my vineyard.‘ When it was evening the owner of the
vineyard said to his foreman, ‗Summon the laborers and give them their pay,
beginning with the last and ending with the first.‘ When those who had
started about five o‘clock came, each received the usual daily wage. So when the first came, they thought that they would receive more, but each of them
also got the usual wage. And on receiving it they grumbled against the land-
owner, saying, ‗These last ones worked only one hour, and you have made
them equal to us, who bore the day‘s burden and the heat.‘ He said to one of
them in reply, ‗My friend, I am not cheating you. Did you not agree with me for
the usual daily wage? Take what is yours and go. What if I wish to give this
last one the same as you? Or am I not free to do as I wish with my own
money? Are you envious because I am generous? Thus, the last will be first,
and the first will be last.‖
