Decrease of VOC limits due to regulations.

Raw material suppliers producing lower VOC capable raw materials.

Raw materials – latexes – have unique morphology and stabilization

package.

Difficult to thicken.

Generate foam – micro and macro

Conventional NiSATs and defoamers observed to be relatively

inefficient in the lower VOC systems compared to higher VOC

formulations.

Paint formulators have to compromise on paint and film properties to

achieve VOC targets.

NEXT GENERATION Additives

• Introduction of differentiated product to the market.

• Dependence on additives (Rheology Modifiers & Defoamers) to

provide needed differentiation.

• Need to develop Next Generation additives

Improved thickening efficiency, anti-foam and defoaming properties.

Improved paint, film and application properties.

• Environmentally friendly additives leading to the formulation of

‘Green’ paints.

NEXT GENERATION Additives – Market Needs

Page 4: FORMULATING WITH NEXT GENERATION RHEOLOGY MODIFIERS

Nonionic Synthetic Associative Thickeners (NiSAT)

Used mostly in DIY and high-end paints for improved application properties

– flow & leveling, spatter resistance, etc.

Alkali-Swellable Thickeners

Anionic acrylic thickeners mostly used in High PVC interior paints

Clay-based Thickeners

Used in paint formulations to improve syneresis control, sag resistance and

anti-settling properties

Polyolefin wax based anti-settling additives

• Two main chemistries

• Polyether – Urea – Polyurethane (PEUPU)

• Polyether Polyol (PEPO)

• Two main shear-effective NiSATs.

Page 33: FORMULATING WITH NEXT GENERATION RHEOLOGY MODIFIERS

Basic Principles

Important to use a combination of grind and letdown defoamers that

work synergistically.

Elementis has found that when the optimum grind and letdown

defoamers are formulated together, less total defoamer will be

required

Grind defoamers require shear to disperse into the system.

The lower the dispersibility rating, the more shear is required and the

more effective the defoamer

Typically, grind defoamers are very hydrophobic and not very dispersible

• Letdown defoamers do not require shear to disperse into the system

The higher the dispersibility rating, the easier the defoamer will get into

the system

Typically, letdown defoamers are less hydrophobic and more dispersible
