Forest Landscape Restoration Project Manager –

Ibitinga, São Paulo State

CONTEXT WeForest is an international non-profit association headquartered in Belgium and with current projects in Brazil, Ethiopia, India, Tanzania, and Zambia. Its mission is to advance innovative, scalable and lasting solutions to restore forest and landscapes for the climate, the people and the planet:

With the common goal of protecting water resources and connecting forest remnants, WeForest has partnered with the company AES Tietê to develop a Forest Landscape Restoration project at the margins of the Tietê river. The project aims to buffer water bodies in surrounding water reservoirs and in local farmlands through forest restoration and landowners’ engagement. Our objective is to also to demonstrate that forest restoration can be done without toxic herbicides.

We are therefore looking for a Project Manager located at the AES premises in the Ibitinga municipality in the Bauru region. The position reports to the Global Programs Director based in Belgium and works in close collaboration with local partners (companies, landowners and municipalities) monitoring project performance on the field.

JOB PURPOSE The main role is to supervise and coordinate the implementation of the new WeForest project in near Tietê River in close cooperation with AES. The candidate will also be required to travel regularly to supervise other projects in São Paulo State and in the Amazon. As WeForest’s only focal person in Brazil for the time being, the position is expected to work in relative autonomy, with support from WeForest HQ.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES Project Management and Coordination

1. Coordinate the delivery of existing projects according to agreed timelines and standards, including:

a. Conducting risks analysis for each project b. Overseeing field activities: tree planting and maintenance without use of herbicide c. Identification and mapping of the restoration sites

2. Review and approve administrative and financial documents from implementing partners and subcontractors prior to transmission to WeForest HQ: progress report, project costing / budget, contract, payment requests.

3. Engage local farmers (landowners) in forest restoration with support from the municipalities, agriculture unions and support them in meeting legal restoration requirements

4. Explore and support the development and design of new potential in Brazil. Research and Networking

5. Engage with universities to facilitate research on selected topics including on the interaction between tree seedlings and invasive grasses.

6. Facilitate environmental education with municipalities and other potential actors Communications

7. Report regularly on project progress, performance and provide communication materials (data, stories, pictures).

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS: Technical expertise

1. Graduated professional (Masters minimum) with at least 1 year experience in permaculture, reforestation and Forest and Landscape Restoration (FLR) in the Atlantic Forest biome.

2. Proven experience in permaculture and restoration without the use of herbicides. 3. Knowledge in mapping for forest restoration and conservation through GIS is a plus. 4. Experience with carbon sequestration such as REDD+ is be a plus.

Project Management and Stakeholder Engagement 1. Substantial experience in project management and the different steps involved including

project design, monitoring & evaluation and sustainability strategies 2. Flexibility to manage/work with different stakeholders such as consultants, researchers, local

communities, landowners, State agents and partners/local NGOs 3. Experience in developing and designing new Forest and Landscape Restoration projects

Communication, documentation and language skills 4. Fluent in Portuguese and English (both spoken and written), 5. Strong and clear communication skills (both internal and external). 6. Comfortable with partners such as private operators, municipality officials and landowners. 7. Capacity to identify relevant project themes and stories for communication. 8. Flexibility to travel to the different sites several times a year.

TERMS & CONDITIONS Contract type: renewable consultancy contract initially for 1 (one) year. WeForest will not cover relocation costs Position: Full-time consultancy contract, based in or nearby Ibitinga municipality, São Paulo

State, Brazil

Start date: ideally May 2020
