Our main goal this year was to find innovative ways to build and grow our business andcommunity development programming. We hosted more community events than ever, whilecontinuing to expand the marketing and sanitation services available to our merchants. Thedistrict took a major leap forward with the official opening of Fordham Plaza, which played hostto a number of events throughout the year and we have exciting plans for the future at that site.

BUSINESS IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT

The mission of the Fordham Road BusinessImprovement District (BID) is to foster and
promote the growth and vitality of its local business community and strengthen its localeconomic base. We achieve this through a range of effective programs that enhancearea maintenance and sanitation conditions, provide business assistance anddevelopment services, improve security, facilitate a beautified streetscape and aid inconstituent problem-solving; while showcasing the business area’s assets throughinnovative marketing and promotion techniques. These services are provided in a cost-efficient and effective manner by the BID and are enhanced by its strong workingpartnerships with public agencies, elected officials and local organizations within thecontext of its neighboring communities.
The BID extends from Washington Avenue to Jerome Avenue along Fordham Roadand also includes the commercial areas on select side streets. The district iscomprised of approximately 80 buildings and almost 300 businesses ranging fromnationwide chains to locally owned independent shops.

The BID sanitation crew consists of eightfull-time employees who sweep the sidewalks,remove stickers and graffiti from streetfurniture, and empty garbage receptacles sevendays a week from 8:30AM to 4:30PM. The“clean team” hauled over 100,000 bags of trashand serviced over 100 trash and recyclingreceptacles throughout the BID’s boundaries.
The BID’s Graffiti Removal servicescontinued through the year, cleaning up anaverage of ten properties and business sitesmonthly. The BID staff conducted graffiti surveysand coordinated removals with affected locations.The sanitation crew continues to maintain theBID’s green spaces by mulching trees and addingfresh coats of paint to street furniture seasonally.
This past year saw the addition of severalmore BID-branded trash receptacles throughoutthe district. The new receptacles offeropportunities for sponsorship and branding fromBID businesses and sponsors. Additionally, theBID welcomed two new solar-powered Big-Belly Trash/Recycling Receptacles to the district.

One of the biggest events of the past year wasthe official opening of FORDHAM PLAZA,which took place in a ceremony held on January20, 2016. The BID has spent much of the yearformalizing agreements over plaza usage andvendors, while working to promote the spacethrough community events.
Shoppers who came to the BID last year weretreated to a number of new promotions, includingGIVEAWAYS of BID-branded merchandise. Thelargest new event was the FIRST ANNUALFORDHAM ROAD FESTIVAL, which turnedthe entire district into a street fair complete with
performers,carnival food,and a classic carshow. Many ofthe BID’s most
popular projects and programs from previousyears continued to expand. The SUMMER
MOVIE SERIES grewfrom five to sevenscreenings last year, splitbetween both FordhamPlaza and BRYAN PARK.Moviegoers enjoyed classicNew York films such asWest Side Story, a themed
double feature of Back to the Future I and II, andmuch more. Ourmerchants also hadthe opportunity toparticipate in nineSIDEWALKSALES, which wasan increase that
followed the success of previous years. TheFORDHAM ROAD MEMBERSHIPINCENTIVE PROGRAM offers our membersspecial perks. Another promotional program is
the PASSPORT TO FORDHAMROAD ADVANTAGE PROGRAM,which aims at getting students,faculty, and staff members of areacolleges, institutions, medicalfacilities, and healthcare centers totake advantage of discounts at over50 participating Fordham Roadbusinesses.

Another huge success was theinstallation of HEARTSEAT bySTEREOTANK, which has helped turnFordham Road and Webster Avenue intoone of the most recognizable corners in theentire city. The interactive art installationwas officially unveiled at an event held inJanuary 2016, where community membersand business owners met the artists. Thepiece remained on Fordham Road throughNovember 2016.

The BID continues to focus on theexpansion of its online marketing byregularly updating its website(www.fordhamroad.nyc) andSOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS(Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.),all of which have seen their trafficand reach increase over the past year.In addition, there was steady growthin downloads and usage of theFORDHAM ROAD MOBILE APP.

Once again, one of the largest events of theyear was the SPARKLING THE HEART OFFORDHAM holiday event, which sawthousands of people coming to Bryan Park towatch the tree-lighting ceremony, great liveperformances, win raffle prizes, and receivefree gifts from Santa Claus, who took timeout of his busy schedule to visit FordhamRoad. The holiday season also saw a numberof other successful BID programs, such as theHOLIDAY SECURITY PATROLS, whoassisted shoppers by keeping the area safe at
its busiest times. Over 50stores also participated inthis year’s HOLIDAYDISCOUNT PROGRAM,bringing them theexposure they want andgiving shoppers thesavings they need duringthe holiday season.
Throughout the year, the BID helped raisefunds and awareness for a number of causes.Once again, the BID supported the AmericanCancer Society MAKING STRIDESAGAINST BREAST CANCER WALK andwas a co-sponsor of Fordham University’sRELAY FOR LIFE. The BID’s team,Fordham Road NYC Goes Pink, receiveddonations from the community and for thesecond year in a row the BID held a
successful DINING TO DONATEnetworking event at Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill & Bar in which 10% of sales were donated to the American Cancer Society (ACS). In addition, the BID, twenty of its businessesand ACS co-sponsored the FORDHAMROAD GO BLUE campaign in order to raiseawareness of colorectal cancer and pursuethe goal of seeing 80% of the populationscreened by 2018. The BID took part in theNEW YORK KICKS BUTTS campaign, a citywide smoking cessation initiative. Lastly, the BID also participated in theTAKE A STAND AGAINST DOMESTICVIOLENCE campaign alongside NYCCouncil Member Ritchie Torres and Solo PaMi Gente Auto Club.
The BID continues to promote andbeautify the area with SEASONALBANNERS. These banners are sponsored in part by Healthfirst, Affinity Health Plan,and many others, and are made possible by our partnership with Intersection(formerly known as Titan 360). The BIDINFORMATION CENTER has assistedvisitors in navigating the area by sharingpoints of interest and information about storesand discounts. Many volunteers work thecenter and distribute BID marketingpublications and promotional materials.

The BID continued its work toREVITALIZE PUBLIC SPACES andimprove Fordham Road. One of the biggestprojects of the last year was the opening ofFORDHAM PLAZA. This exciting newaddition to Fordham Road includes plenty ofseating, greenery, and park space for thecommunity to enjoy. The site will be utilizedfor many different purposes in the upcomingmonths and years.
Additionally, many other sites wereupgraded, such as 188th STREET ANDMULLER PARK AND PLAZA, which sawplantings and upgrades with the help ofSustainable South Bronx and the FORDHAMUNIVERSITY URBAN PLUNGE PROGRAM.
FORDHAM FEVER FRIDAYS also madeits return to Fordham Road, taking place onthe first Friday of most spring and summermonths. This year’s themes, “Carnival Fun”and “Safari Adventure”, were advertisedheavily on social media andwww.fordhamfeverfridays.com. Specialthanks to our partner, Image Marketing formaking these events possible.
The Fordham Road BID held successfulNETWORKING EVENTS throughout theyear, marked by successful partnerships,
increased attendanceand participation, and strengthenedcommunity ties. Wecontinued to partnerand collaborate withorganizations like theAmerican CancerSociery and Visionsto improve servicesprovided to both
businesses and community members. The BIDagain participated in the Visions AnnualDinner & Award Ceremony.
In an effort to continue developingrelationships with the community, the BID hasled NEIGHBORHOOD WALKING TOURSand collaborated with larger tour groups toshowcase the rich history of the Fordhamsection of the Bronx. This last year, the BIDgave a group from the international nonprofitBuildOn a tour of the district and introducedthem to Stereotank, the designers of Heartseat.
To further enhance the experience ofshoppers along Fordham Road, the BID hascontinued to work with the Department ofTransportation to bring new WAYFINDINGSIGNAGE along Fordham Road.

CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTSSince its opening this past year,
FORDHAM PLAZA has been a huge focusof the BID both in terms of present andfuture programming. We hope to formalizeall agreements in the near future so that wecan secure and finalize tenants and holdlarge-scale events in the plaza in the future.
RETAIL DEVELOPMENT AND ATTRACTION
The BID’s many capital improvementprojects assist in the recruitment of newbusinesses and retailers. We have seen manynew store openings this year includingMacy’s Backstage, Chipotle, Panda Express,and various other mom and pop stores. The BID’s INFORMATION SHARINGserves to inform retail attraction and realestate professionals about the economicclimate on Fordham Road. The BID also maintains monthly statistics onPEDESTRIAN COUNTS and AVAILABLE RETAIL SPACE in the areawhich is provided to interested parties.

COMMUNITY RELATIONS AND OUTREACH
The BID has developed strongrelationships with our three NYPD precincts.We will continue to offer SEASONALSECURITY PATROLS with officers to serveas ambassadors to the business community.
The BID will also continue to find ways toinvolve the community in our programs andevents such as hosting more WALKINGAND INTERACTIVE ART TOURS.Furthermore, the BID plans to bringadditional TEMPORARY URBAN ARTINSTALLATIONS into the area not only aspart of our beautification plan, but also toengage the public with more culture. The
BID is proud tocontinuouslytransform publicspaces by installingmore planters andflowers. Certainspaces like theoverpasses on the
Grand Concourse, the Plaza at 188th Street,and Muller Park and Plaza now allow forseating and an array of decorative florals.With our partners Sustainable South Bronx, we hope to bring more of theseimprovements onto Fordham Road to createa more vibrant shopping environment.
MARKETING AND PROMOTION
The BID continues to look for innovativeevents and promotions in the hopes ofengaging customers with the area in thebest way possible. Events like FORDHAMFEVER FRIDAYS and OUTDOORMOVIE NIGHTS receive unanimouspositive responses from both customers andbusinesses and will likely continue in theyears to come.
We will continue to expand ourSIDEWALK SALES promotions byrecruiting more businesses to participate.Along with the sidewalk sales, we plan toincrease the amount of participating storesin the PASSPORT TO FORDHAMADVANTAGE PROGRAM by advertisingit better to the surrounding schools andorganizations.
