TYPE 2 DIABETES

What is Type 2 Diabetes:

-In adults, Type 2 Diabetes accounts for 90-95% of all diagnoses cases of diabetes

-Type 2 diabetes begins with an insulin resistance; the cells of the body do not use its insulin properly

-As the need for insulin increases, the pancreas loses its ability to produce it (Supply does not match the Demand)

New Jersey Diabetes Statistics

New Jersey diabetes statistics and death rates:

6.4 out of every 100 adults in New Jersey has diabetes, ranking it 29th highest in the nation for the ratio of people with diabetes to the general population.

27.9 out of every adult 100,000 deaths in New Jersey are due to diabetes, ranking New Jersey 15th highest in the nation for diabetes-related deaths.

In 2005, 475,000 New Jersey adults were diagnosed with diabetes and by 2007, 9% of the total adult population had been diagnosed with diabetes

-In 1995, New Jersey had a diabetes rate of 4.9%

-In 1995, New Jersey had an obesity rate of 12.3%

-According to 2010 statistics released by the CDC, an estimated 596,000 adults in New Jersey have been diagnosed with diabetes, an increase from 6.8 percent in 2004 to 9.2 percent in 2010.

-If obesity rates continue to climb, by 2030, the obesity rate in NJ could reach 48.6% of all adults

-In New Jersey, this would contribute to:

-971,386 new cases of Type 2 Diabetes

-2,087,173 new cases of coronary heart disease & stroke

-2,177,679 cases of hypertension

-1,418,265 new cases of arthritis

-308,035 new cases of obesity-related cancer

National Diabetes Fact Sheet 2011

-As of 2007, the total cost of Diabetes was 174 billion dollars annually

-Medical expenses for people with diabetes are more than two times higher than for people without diabetes

-Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure, non-traumatic lower

limb amputations, and new cases of blindness among adults in the

United States.

-The risk for stroke and heart attack is 2-4 times higher in individuals

with diabetes

The dramatic rise in the diabetes rate is now considered a public health crisis, particularly since the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that about one-third of people with

diabetes are undiagnosed.

HISTORY OF THE YMCA DIABETES PREVENTION PROGRAM

-The YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program is an evidenced-based program that has been developed and tested for more than a decade

-Initial work by the National Institute of Health’s Diabetes Prevention Program showed that lifestyle interventions to lose weight and increase PA significantly reduced the development of Type 2 Diabetes by 58% during a three year period.

-Reduction was even greater (71%) among adults 60 yrs or older

HISTORY OF THE YMCA DIABETES PREVENTION PROGRAM

-Participants lost an average of 5-7% of their entry-level body weight increased their daily PA from baseline to 30 minutes a day for most days of the week.

-The study was conducted as one-on-one

-Walking was the most common form of PA

-This study of work was replicated by the researchers at Indiana University School of Medicine I partnership with the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis.

-One difference was this study was in a group setting
