This prayer from the Episcopal Network for Stewardship of God’s Creationand opening verses (9-10) of Genesis remind us that part of Christian teachinghas always been that human beings have responsibility to care for the earth,to be good stewards of God’s creation.

Our "Next 50 Years" plan willkick off with a very visiblerepresentation of our dedication toour community, our parish family, and our environment - through thecreation of new outdoor spacesconsisting of drought-tolerantCalifornia flora, contemplative andmeeting spaces, walking paths, andcommunity/public use areas.

This project will begin in Apriland Phase 1 (removal of thirstygrass and replacement withprofessionally designed landscapeplan of drought-tolerant plantingsand decomposed granitepathways) will be completedwithin 2-3 months.

The immediate benefits will besubstantially less water usage, lesspesticide usage, and lessmaintenance through theimplementation of nativevegetation, weather-smartirrigation controllers, drip irrigation, and semi-permiable pavingsurfaces.

Forward-thinking concepts forPhase 2 and beyond will bediscussed and agreed upon withinput from the Parish and supportfrom the broader community.

Current ideas focus on thecreation of a community garden, two community orchards, andinteractive spaces to facilitateconnectivity with the land for thebenefit of the parish and greatercommunity. The goal is to betterutilize the resources of the parishfor the benefit of the community.

This plan has been shared withthe Corona del Mar BusinessImprovement District recently, andthey were enthusiasticallysupportive.

WOMEN’S FELLOWSHIP: Theirnext meeting will be Tuesday, May 26.The group meets at the home of BethBianchi at 7pm. Being discussed isCultivating Meaningful Work: LettingGo of Self-Doubt and “Supposed To”.For more information, and directionsto Beth’s home, please contact MelindaRader, 949/230-3644, or Beth Bianchi,949/721-0192.

better stewards is an important first step. While many of the decisions we makealong the way will be small, they allreflect our attitudes and, over time, shape our lives.

My Mom taught me to turn off extralights. I remember my Dad wanting tobuy energy efficient appliances.Twenty-one years in Berkeley taught memany attitudes and perspectives aboutecology and caring for our environment.

Our contact with nature has deeprestorative powers. After basking inCalifornia sunshine or feeling wind blowwhile driving a convertible or rolling ingreen grass with Luke I always feelmore peaceful within myself andconnected to surrounding power and toGod. What in nature feeds you?

We Californians are finally hearing alot about conserving water. When youdo, please remember this prayer frompage 306 of our Book of CommonPrayer:

We thank you, Almighty God,for the gift of water. Over itthe Holy Spirit moved in thebeginning of creation. Throughit you led the children of Israelout of the bondage in Egyptinto the land of promise. In ityour son Jesus received thebaptism of John and wasanointed with the Holy Spiritas the Messiah, the Christ, tolead us,through his death andresurrection, from the bondageof sin into everlasting life.We thank you, Father, for thewater of Baptism. In it we areburied with Christ in his death.By it we share in hisresurrection. Through it we arereborn by the Holy Spirit.

Our “landscape renovation” programis already underway and THERE WILLBE AN OPEN ALL-PARISH MEETINGAFTER WORSHIP (about 11:15 a.m.)ON SUNDAY, MAY 3; PLEASE COMEWITH YOUR QUESTIONS ANDCONCERNS TO ASK OURLANDSCAPE ARCHITECT, DONHENRY AND OUR OWNPARISHIONERS/LEADERS, KATIMOWAT AND TOM NICHOLSON.

This project will certainly conservewater and thereby witness to ourneighbors that we are good stewardsof God’s creation and, by reducingcosts of water and gardening, will

provide more resources for ministryhere. Permeable paths will connectprayerful places like our sanctuary andlabyrinth with new ones, perhaps areflection garden and/or new stationsof the cross.

Our playground will be extended androse garden highlighted. In the initialplan is:

“Community Garden – including useas instructional/educational tool onurban gardening/ producing nutritiousfood for Church members andneighborhood (which I hope we willbroadly define). Could include:vegetable garden, fruit trees, bee‘hotel’, place to grow flowers/ orchidsfor use in the Church, etc.”

My fervent hope is that we will growfood to feed hungry people and so liveinto my favorite Bible verse, Matthew25:40: “Inasmuch as you do good toGod’s beloveds in need you do it withJesus.”

Another General Convention summer! And much of the information is alreadyavailable on line. There has been aconcerted effort to make moreinformation available through theGeneral Convention web site before theConvention itself. So, if you'd like tolook ahead here are some suggestions.

First, from the General Conventionweb page you can link directly to thetwo reports that have been getting themost attention: the Task Force for Re-imagining the Episcopal Church (TREC)and the Task Force on the Study ofMarriage. With an additional click, youcan link to the Blue Book reports(formally, the Reports to Convention ofCommittees, Commission, Agencies, and Boards). Instead of waiting for aprinted version, these are being loadedto the web site. And, instead of waitingfor one complete publication, reports arebeing added as they are submitted. So,if there's a report you're interested inand don't see yet, keep checking back.

The same thing is happening withresolutions to General Convention. Ifyou link to the Legislative Resourcespage, you can link through to all theresolutions that have been submitted.Once again, these are being added asthey are submitted, so keep checkingto see if your particular interest isaddressed.

With the Reports from the Task Forcefor Re-imagining the Episcopal Churchand the Task Force on the Study ofMarriage, and also the election of thenext Presiding Bishop, this should bean interesting General Convention. Youcan go ahead and start your review, andso be better able to keep informed aboutall that happens in and around this year'sGeneral Convention.

Later, around age 10, he became moreserious about the sport and credits hiscoach to helping him develop a workethic at practice. Practice most oftentakes place in the early morning at thehigh school and he swims at the NovaClub when not practicing at the highschool.

Intensity in the sport is balanced, forBen, in other areas. He's a Boy Scoutand is aiming for the Eagle Scoutaward, (Lucky us at St. Michael's) andsays he has a bit of social life as well.He attends the "Journey to Adulthood"(J2A) Sunday School sessions.

Most of our acolytes, when askedabout their service at the altar, say thatthey like being close enough to see whatthe priest actually does at the altar.Perhaps anyone reading this, feels thesame way and might want to volunteerfor that work.

Transformed by 12 years inTanzania, missionaries set

to return

By Matthew Davies

[Episcopal News Service] As achild, the Rev. Sandra McCanndreamed of someday going to Africa. But she never imagined it wouldbecome her home, her ministry andher entire life for 12 years.

When Sandy and her husbandMartin reached their mid-50s, theymade the audacious decision to giveup their successful medical careersin radiology and pathology, sell theirhome and move to Africa as EpiscopalChurch missionaries. Their movewas delayed for three years and inthat time Sandy graduated fromVirginia Theological Seminary with aMaster of Divinity degree and wasordained as an Episcopal priest.

After an “internship” year inMaseno, Kenya, where they workedalongside fellow Episcopalmissionaries Gerry and NancyHardison, the McCanns moved toDodoma, Tanzania’s capital city, andhave spent the past decade teachingand healing and living in a communityfar removed from their former livesin Columbus, Georgia. Theexperience has changed andexpanded their worldview forever, they say.

With support and encouragementfrom the Episcopal Church’s MissionPersonnel Office, and at the invitationof the late Bishop Mdimi Mhogolo ofthe Diocese of Central Tanganyika,Sandy taught at Msalato TheologicalCollege and eventually took up theposition of communications directoras well as serving as college chaplain.

Martin set up a pathology laboratorywhere diseases could be detectedthrough the use of a variety ofinvestigative techniques, a servicethat has grown steadily over the past10 years and was previouslynonexistent in the central part ofTanzania. Today, the clinic receivesspecimens from local governmenthospitals in Dodoma as well asseveral mission hospitals.

“The laboratory has brought a newdimension to the healthcare systemhere,” Martin told ENS. “Physicians, instead of going from symptoms totreatment, are expanding their

diagnostic capabilities and evidence-based care. Although there are still greatchallenges in treatment options, patientsare better off.”

Over the years, through generousdonations, Martin has been able toreplace and upgrade equipment and hisstaff of one assistant has grown tothree, one with a degree inhistopathology.

Martin has concentrated his effortson fine-needle aspiration, a simpleprocedure for establishing a swiftdiagnosis that he feels has a vital roleto play in resource-poor countries. In2014, he completed more than 1,200fine needle aspiration biopsies and2,200 histopathology cases.

Now in their early 70s, the McCannshave decided 2015 will be their lastyear in Tanzania, a difficult decisionfor them, but one that has been madeeasier by the successful conclusion toan endowment for Msalato TheologicalCollege to provide for studentsponsorships and faculty salaries.

But before they leave, they are eagerto ensure that Martin’s pathologypractice will be continued and areurgently seeking a pathologist (or two)to replace him.

[Anyone interested in working as apathologist in Dodoma should contactthe Rev. David Copley, missionpersonnel officer for the Domestic andForeign Missionary Society, [email protected].]

by Rachael Held Evans

New York Times bestselling authorRachel Held Evans embarks on a questto find out what it really means to bepart of the Church.

Like millions of her millennial peers,Rachel Held Evans didn’t want to goto church anymore. The hypocrisy, thepolitics, the gargantuan buildingbudgets, the scandals—church cultureseemed so far removed from Jesus. Yet,despite her cynicism and misgivings, something kept drawing her back to[The Episcopal] Church. And so sheset out on a journey to understandChurch and to find her place in it.

Centered around seven sacraments,Evans’ quest takes readers through aliturgical year with stories aboutbaptism, communion, confirmation, confession, marriage, vocation, anddeath that are funny, heartbreaking, andsharply honest.

Evans (A Year of BiblicalWomanhood ) uses the lens of herown journey as an evangelicalChristian to explore what ishappening in church circles todayand, more broadly, what it meansto be part of a church community.Evans humorously describes hergradual evolution from a teenagerwith a "crusader complex" to anadult who became increasinglyuncomfortable with her church'sconservative theology: "The troublestarted when I began to suspect Godwas less concerned with savingpeople from hell than I was."

Dividing the book into sectionsnamed after sacraments, Evansbegins by contemplating, in lyricalprose, the theological significanceof each sacrament's key ingredient(water, bread, ash, etc.). A powerfulstoryteller, Evans capturestransformative moments, such asleaving a church full "of kind,

generous people"; investingwholeheartedly in a new church that"collapsed slowly, one week at a time";and witnessing healing at the GayChristian Network's conference, feeling"simultaneously furious at Christianity'senormous capacity to wound and awedby its miraculous capacity to heal."Honest and moving, this memoir is boththeologically astute and beautifullywritten.
