We were delighted to be nominated by Leeds’ legends, the Kaiser Chiefs, to

benefit from the charity collection at their recent gig at Elland Road stadium.

We raised an amazing £739.65 on the night, which the band dedicated to their

keyboardist’s father, Alan, who died inSt Gemma’s care.

The band’s keyboardist, Nick Baines, affectionately known to Kaiser Chiefs fans as Peanut, paid tribute to the St Gemma’s

team as they headed off on their tourthis spring:

“My dad died peacefully at St Gemma’s in 2018. The care was amazing and I can’t tell you how much they helped my family cope

with his sudden brain tumour diagnosis. The whole team looked after our dad

(and us) so well in his final months. We will forever be grateful.”

We send our thanks to the Kaiser Chiefs and love to Nick and his family.

We’re here if you need us.

Special CentenarianSpecial CentenarianWe were honoured to celebrate Day Services patient Wilhelmina’s 100th birthday with her recently. And of course our talented chef Mark presented her with one of his signature celebration cakes!

Wilhelmina has been supported by St Gemma’s for a number of years, receiving on-going support so she can focus on spending time with her many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-

great-grandchildren!

Some of you may recognise Wilhelmina and her daughter, Norma, from our 40 Faces of St Gemma’s Hospice project.

You’re helping Lizzy to bringYou’re helping Lizzy to bringcomfort and peace… comfort and peace… Rachel Cooper recently supported St Gemma’s in memory of her beloved Grandad Maurice. He was cared for bySt Gemma’s Community Nurse Specialist Lizzy Gascoigne and Rachel told us how Lizzy’s support made a big difference at a difficult time:“My lovely Grandad was under the care of St Gemma's in his nursing home and was visited by one of theSt Gemma’s community nurses, Lizzy. I could not fault the obvious love Lizzy had for her job and the kindness she showed to us. She was there to comfort me when he passed away. It really was so amazing and comforting to have Lizzy help us, she turned up at just the right time when I needed her; it was like she knew.

A year later, we received an invite to attend a memorial service at St Gemma's which was just beautiful. My mum got to light a candle with his name on which she placed on the tree of light and also received a plant in his memory to take home and plant in the garden.

As sad as it has been, our experience of St Gemma’s has been amazing. Thank you.”

The difference you make...Every five minutes, someone in the UK dies without the care and support they need and, with our population ageing, there are even more people who need that help each year. The good news is thatSt Gemma’s is working hard to reach more and more people every day, either in the Hospice itself, out across the community or via our growing range of day services and clinics.

This is all only possible thanks to you. Your ongoing support and commitment to St Gemma’s Hospice means that more local people can get the help they really need today and in the future – totally free of charge.

In the last year:• 1,228 local people were referred to St Gemma’s

care for the first time

• The St Gemma’s community team of doctors and nurses had 5,005 face-to-face consultations with patients in their own homes

• There were 517 admissions onto the Hospice’s In-Patient Unit – we’re one of the few Hospices that accepts admissions 24 hours a day

• 100% of bereaved relatives who answered a survey told us that they felt their loved one had died in the right place, with professional, dignified care, and their loved ones’ pain and symptoms were controlled

• We trained 640 healthcare professionals and had 118 student placements supporting them to influence and deliver the best possible patient care in the future

• £6 million was raised by our brilliant community of supportersThanks to you, we were able to provide all of our expert services completely free of charge to patients and their families.

Rachel also wrote a tribute to her Grandad on theSt Gemma’s Memory Wall: “It seems like forever since I was last able to walk into your room and say ‘hello grandad’ and make you a cup of tea. Words can’t ever begin to describe how much we all miss you, and wish you were here still. Luckiest girl on earth to have you as my grandad.”

“Smile through your fear and sorrow,Smile then maybe tomorrow,You’ll see that life is still worthwhile, If you just smile”

Caring KibCaring KibAt St Gemma’s we pride ourselves on training and developing our staff. This includes offering opportunities for progression to our staff, allowing them to do their very best and even move into a new career in healthcare.

We’re delighted that Kib has decided to take the plunge and begin his journey into healthcare, starting as an apprentice healthcare assistant.Kib joined our team over seven years ago, firstly working in the Hospice’s Bistro and then serving patients and their families on the In-Patient Unit. While working on the In-Patient Unit, Kib enjoyed talking to patients and their families. Many of his colleagues recognised his naturally caring and patient manner and encouraged him to apply for the new role.

Kib says: “This is an exciting opportunity to develop my career atSt Gemma’s and take my first step to becoming a healthcare assistant –and, one day, maybe a qualified registered nurse. St Gemma’s is so supportive and I am happy to start my training with such a great team, and they are really helping me to build my skills and confidence.”

We wish him well!

Hub of activityOur retail hub in Bramley is the base for the team who run our successful chain of 24 charity shops across Leeds. There are offices, a warehouse and even a charity shop on site, so there is always plenty to do. Sarah Cohen manages the warehouse and tells us more:“We have been in the hub now for over three years and we don’t know how we functioned before we had this space. The warehouse itself is 10,000 sq. ft. and that’s where we receive, sort, categorise, hang and dispatch all the kindly donated items back out to one of the charity shops. The items only start raising money for the Hospice when they are sold, so we work hard to turn the donated stock around as quickly as we can and get it out for sale.”

We couldn’t do this without the amazing support we receive from lots of local people and businesses. They literally come and work their socks off for hours, but they must enjoy it as they come back again the next week! We’ve had teams from Hitachi Capital and Asda recently who really enjoyed helping us and they sent us messages afterwards to say that it was ‘an amazing and rewarding day’.”

If you can volunteer in our hub, or any of our shops, we would love to hear from you. Contact us directlyon 0113 255 7552 or visit: recruitment.st-gemma.co.uk/home/warehouse-volunteer

A fitting tributeJulie dedicated a Forever Flower to her Mum last summer. She told us how she feels every time she sees it:“Mum was a vibrant lady who acted and looked much youngerthan her 91 years! She was a loving and caring mother, grandmother, mother-in-law and auntie to all of the family. I think about her every day and my Forever Flower reminds me every time I walk past it in the garden how much we all miss her. My brother, Stephen and I remember her fondly, even the times when she told us off, which she did quite often! Our beautiful Forever Flower is a fitting tribute to a wonderful lady!”

We often hear myths about St Gemma’s or hospice care in general so we are continuing our Myth-Busting campaign to address some of those common

misconceptions. An important part of our work is to ensure that the community understands what we do, who we

care for, how you can access our services, and how we are funded. So we are tackling some of the misconceptions out there head-on, and will work hard to spread the ‘truths’ about St Gemma’s and the

amazing work we do, over the coming months.

Myth:‘It must be a really depressing place to work…’

Reality:Amanda Henderson, Head of In-Patient Care said: “Lots of people assume that working for a hospice is sad and morbid. But I can honestly say that is not even close to the truth. It’s common to hear laughter, not just amongst the team but also with patients and their visitors.

Maybe it’s because we talk openly to people about the sad things that makes things seem a little less tense. We laugh, we sometimes cry, but it’s a caring, supportive environment that allows you to do your job well whilst being conscious of those around you.

We can’t change the ending, but we can certainly help to make people’s final months, weeks, days or hours the best they can possibly be. And that makes working for St Gemma’s very positive and a real privilege.”

Myth:‘Hospice care is just for elderly cancer patients’

Reality: St Gemma’s provides expert care to anyone over the age of 18 years old who has had a diagnosis of a non-curable, life limiting illness. Although a lot of our patients are living with cancer, this is not the only illness we care for. We look after patients who have had any diagnosis of a non-curable, life-limiting illness including: respiratory disorders, heart disease, Parkinson’s, motor neurone disease, and other neurological problems. Our patients vary in age.

We also support patients’ families including their children and have a bereavement team who are specialists in dealing with children and young people.

Philip was cared for at St Gemma’s in his final days. Philip’s wife shared her memories:

“On Philip’s first day at the Hospice my eldest little boy said: ‘I don’t feel scared for Daddy anymore now he is safe and happy here.’

We were able to push Philip’s bed out onto his balcony and the boys were able to sit with him in the sunshine overlooking the beautiful gardens on their last day together. The staff made it as special as it could be for them… this was the day we were hoping for Philip and the boys.”

Your loved one’s memory can live on…Leaving a gift in your Will can be a very special way to commemorate a loved one’s life.

Last year, one in five St Gemma’s patients were cared for thanks to gifts left in Wills, and every donation made a lasting difference.A gift in your Will won’t cost you anything now but it will ultimately help to make every day count for patients and families in the future.

We know that making a Will and leaving a gift is something you’ll want to think about very carefully.
