PROLOGUE

"All the world's a stage,

And all the men and women merely players;

They have their exits and their entrances;

And one man in his time plays many parts."

So has our high school life been a play. Each of us has had many parts, some

heavier than others but all equally important.

The ensuing pages record the scenes that were spotlighted in our six years. On

them the curtain has fallen forever. And that is as it should be, for the curtain

rises on another and larger stage, the world. We don new costumes to play our

individual roles, perhaps as farmers, scientists, home makers, or diplomats. Those

who were stars may be so no more—and those who played minor roles may assume

stellar parts.

We have learned the lessons of ensemble playing—we will meet the challenge and

strive to—

"Act well the part; there all the honor lies."

CRITICS LOOK BACKBob Johnson Jean Thomen Bob Moiriss

The iron curtain was cranked open onSeptember 6, 1943. A troop of motheaten Sth graders took their places in thefreshman class. The days dragged on andJune was in sight when somebody cameup with an idea for a freshman dance.Something new? The typical froshslumped down further in his seat andplanned his summer vacation while someof the more energetic souls stirred up in-tcicst in tnc inauguration of a ninth gradestomp. They dug up the name "JuneBug Jive" and acquired the able servicesof Miss Alice Johnson as sponsor. Thedance was a sensation! Treasurer Burdittannounced the following fall that the classearned 2c.

The Sophomore year just prolonged theagony as 21 5 pupils had 2c between them.Borrowing heavily from the kind-heartedStudent Council, the class gave dance No.2, "47th Heaven." It was startling tosee how few people could attend a dance. They made a small haul, however, andwere $20 to the good. The curtain smashedclown as the class clowns were beginningto emerge.

1945 and a novel innovation: they de-cided to stage a movie. The name is for-gotten, but the 35c is remembered. Giveus time, boy!

Due to the Polio scare their autumndance was postponed till winter when itwas christened "Snow Ball." As usual, the decorations came catapulting down onthe heads of the cash customers and animmediate suit was on their hands. Presi-dent Weiland attended to the prostratefigures, however, and all was well.

Prom time came around and once more

they dug deep. Money from the saleof Rah! Rah! buttons helped a little andthey got past the financial obstruction withflying colors. The climax was reachedwhen the benign graduating class of '46bestowed $[>U on them and said, "Here, bud, you need it more than we do. "Deducting expenses, (personally, we thinkthere was a small time Tammany Hallracket operating behind the suave counte-nances of their class officers) they cameout with a net of $22.49. The union menclosed the curtains and they made read)to commence the finale

The big act opened September 4, 1946.Drifting back from distant shores weremany colorful directors (teachers,) andstudents who had borne the burden ofAmerica's hostilities for many months. Some had written books about their ex-ploits, e. g., "Uncle Ollie says—" byO LAV.

A final blow at Vaudeville was struckin the Hi-Y Follies and Valentine Varieties as various members of the senior classshowed the Empire a thing or two. "SingSing Stomp" was heralded as '47's bestdance, due no doubt, to the extensivepublicity.

Due to the regretted resignation of Mrs.Scott (formerly Miss Alice Johnson), Mr.Edgar Davis took over sponsorship duties. His stay at the helm was shortlived andhe turned over "1947" to Mr. Harry Law-rence who came to the rescue and provedhimself an excellent director.

The mouldy curtain finally brings to ahalt this ccmical burlesque as graduationturns each classmate on his individualroad of destinv.

PROPHECYThe curtain has fallen and our play is over. Here we are backstage for our

ljst part\. Our thoughts turn to the final and most important act—the future. With the aid of Madam Fifi, the celebrated fortune teller, we shall try to seewhat the future holds in store for us. Quiet—she is meditating over her crystalball—she speaks:

"I see a large hall, resplendent with colorful decorations and bright lights. Itis a reunion of this great play. The styles indicate that the year is 1957. Thepicture is becoming clearer.

"I sec Louie Fischer, President of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, puttingthe finishing touches on the decorations of crepe paper and balloons, and MyronMusselman, currently employed as the chef at the Waldorf (cafeteria) testinghis specially prepared chocolate cream souffle. There's Nancy Cuthbertson greet-ing the host of fine performers gathered for the occasion.

"On the opposite side of the room from me, posing against one of the mam-moth balloons, is Tom Britton, current cover boy for Boys' Life'. Mary FrancesKarhart, who has just completed a successful scientific poll on the number of

cigarette butts found in subway stations, is seen conversing in a nearby cornerwith Joan Van Ostrom, starring in Norman Christian's latest production of 'AngelStreet.'

"Sitting at a small table is Nancy Jacobus, President of the Safe Driver's Associ-ation. Charlie Mott, John Hiinn, and Jack Skinner were once members, but theydecided that they couldn't live up to the standards, and there are rumors thatthe new president is only temporary. With Nancy is Jean Thomcn, Dean ofWomen at the University of Better Drivers. Graduates are eligible to becomemembers of the Safe Driver's Association.

"Ah. Now I see that our guests will be thrilled by the vivacious and alwaysunusual rhythm of Bob Johnson and his band. The band has been unable torehearse for a while as Mr. Johnson had to pawn his trumpet in order to bailBob Bachmann, alias The Shadow, out of jail. The Shadow pleads innocentto the charges of throwing snowballs on Eastman Street. It is a popular opin;onthat the band would play better if those two noted drummers. Ken Hall and TomLyons wouldn't switch music with Don Hird, the baritone player. Mr. Johnson

will lose none of his popularity."Several of the gorgeous, glamorous girls of the Currie Follies will do a novelty

dance, Lois Frcntz will lead, and it will feature Jean Borden, Betty Langston,Pat Brad way, Anne Weston, and Shirley Tinnes. This will be followed by specialtydances by Ruth Kelly and Bev Van Duyne.

"I now sec that the lights are dimming, and the guests are to be honored bythat noted soprano, Miss Jean Can\ The reporter, George Apgar, commentson Miss Carr's voice as 'The voice that thrills millions', but when questionedfurther he refuses to say what millions.

"It is certainly a breath taking sight to see so many beauties gathered at onereunion. Krnia Allison has won the women's championship for the best tiddle-di-wink player in the state. Chris Root has been awarded a gold plaque for beingthe most outstanding lacrosse player on the Princeton team. Bob Fast, em-ployee! by the Fuller Brush Company, has successfully completed the sale of2,000,000 automatic tooth brushes, and Peggy Austin was acclaimed by a tre-mendous throng at her debut at Carnegie Hall for her playing of the 'Concerto

for the Index Finger.""Looking over the crowd I notice the absence of two well-known personages,

Joan Gerdts and Bill Bennis. Miss Gerdts will be unable to attend as she is inthe middle of writing the next edition of the Army Navy program, and Bill Bennis, known to his more intimate fans as 'Benny Bilious', has to remain in Hollywoodto answer two fan letters.

"In my crystal ball, producer Norman Hughes and director Ray Mead can beseen sitting at a secluded table talking of their latest production. They are soonto introduce to Broadway The Man Who Ate and Went. ' Anne Lombardi willplay the wife of the leading man, and Alvah Kinney and Lee Knowlson are to bestage managers.

"The young man leaning against the wall with a tall glass of milk (straight)needs no introduction to the public. He is Ernie Hobbie, who couldn't decidewhether to be an Ambassador to Spain or not, but finally decided to accept aposition as President of the Army kindergarten, the only kindergarten where, afterthirteen years, students are eligible for West Point. Marion McDiarmid is coach-ing the kindergarten football teams, and June Leffler has been teaching English,

French, physics, chemistry, and history in her spare time. Katherine Jones mayalso hold a position there if turned down by Yale.

"At one of the larger tables I see a group of people discussing the achievementsof their friends. I will repeat some of the comments:

"Sylvia Kajander has made herself famous as the world's greatest typist, averag-ing eight words a minute. Her competition has been keen, however, as BillMcCann is only one word behind her.

"Jack Warsinski, whose advice on political affairs has long been ignored, hasbeen appointed ambassador to Lower Slobbovia. He will replace Bob Tool, whoserecent blunders have nearly caused a war.

"Professors Parsons, Druckenmillcr, and Krcbaum have had a slight accidentwhile developing their new explosive 'C.U.S.'47.' A complete report will followwhen they are found.

"Bill Fairchild, noted mineralogist and explorer, reported discovering an enor-mous emerald. Upon further examination, it was found to be a piece of brokenbeer bottle.

"Dr. Zmgalcs, the famous tocnail specialist, has reported curing the hang-nails of such notables as Phvl Pfarrcr, Betty Roll, Nancy Stack and Bob Nicdrach.P. S. No infections reported.

"Jack Winter, noted electronic scientist, has developed the "noseometer", anelectronic nose which can detect over >,000 odors. It will prove invaluable intracking clown the notorious bank robbers "Snake" Tcrrill and "Gil" Albury, andis destined to replace bloodhounds.

"The ice cream magnate, David Semonite, declares that his company canproduce over 3.000 different flavors. This statement is challenged by PeggySmith, Frances Polidoro, and Dolores Sparks, charter members of the Ice CreamTasters' Union.

"Professor Burditt of the New York Medical School acclaims Ralph Luettersas the perfect zoological example of prehistoric man. His skull has already beenclaimed by the Museum of Natural History, and private detective Emil Toblerhas been assigned to guard him clay and night.

Senators Walter Oustcrman and Dick Snyder have presented a bill beforeCongress, which would abolish English from High School curricula. They claimEnglish is no longer spoken in this country.

"Ruth Spitzfaden and Carolyn Muller, co-authors of the best seller, 'The Nuttand I', are being sued by Doris Nutt for using her name in their book withoutpermission.

"At the Newspaper Photographers' convention, chairman George Gerrity willaward Pat Vrecland the green ribbon for the most perfectly developed ear-lobes.

"World famous inventors Ed Geiger and Ted Keith announce the developmentof an atomic nut cracker. They claim that it can smash 2,000 nuts a second. Thereis still room for improvement, as no way has yet been derived to separate thenuts from the shells.

"Martin Wichner, who has made a fortune in the pretzel business, says he willretire into lonely bachelorhood.

"Joan Bracken, Joan Tunner, and Joyce Urmston have crossed the Atlanticin only four days in an open row boat. They claim that they could have done itin half the time if the oars hadn't leaked.

"Dick Lovcland and Spencer Travcr have developed a new and cheap substitutefor beer. Its formula has been kept secret, but they say that it will soon be onsale for thirty cents a gallon. They will sail to Sweden to receive the NobelPrize for outstanding work in science.

"Elsie Schacht and Frances Prista arc partners in a fight against the drinkingof -Coke".

"Nathaniel Brooks is the newly elected president of the Snappy Garter Co.Their motto: "For a sure hold up, use Snappy Garters'.

"Carol Magcc achieves great renown in her new play. She Dunn Did It'. Theunusual stage settings for Miss Magcc's production are done by Rae Hagenian, that expert on modern art.

"Bcttv Hcmleb, famous comedian of stage and screen, states that she owesher success to Jack Skerratt, who discovered her in a fish market, [ack is alsoresponsible for the discovery of such lovelies as Mary Boch, Frances DiFabio. andNancy Glendenning, who was a model until she refused to pose for Henna Ads.

"The crystal ball in becoming cloudy, and the picture is fading. The futureis again lost from my view and the present has taken its place."

FOOTBALLThis year the Bine and Gold set out to prove

that a small but plucky team can come throughon top. Considering the overwhelming odds theyfaced in most games the boys came through infine fashion. Injuries and hard luck hamperedthe team continuously throughout the season.

Two consecutive defeats at the hands of Lindenand Regional started off the makings of a poorseason but the Weekleymen fought hard androlled over North Plainfield 20 to 6 in the fol-lowing game. This game was highlighted by aforty-five yard touchdown sprint by Dick Brown.Highly inspired by their previous achievementthe Blue and Gold battled a stronger Rahwayeleven to a 6-6 tic. The passing of Nemo Koury

was the deciding factor in this hard fought bat-tle. Bigger and stronger Hillside and RosellePark teams handed the Cranford boys twostraight lacings. Kager to prove themselves, theBlue and Gold traveled to Roselle and edged outa 7-6 victory. The hard driving Cranford linecame into the limelight during this tense strug-gle. The final game of the season saw the Cran-ford eleven crush a favored Woodbridge team 25to 9. The brainy quarterbacking of NemoKoury plus the running of his backfield matesproved too much for the Woodbridge eleven. The fine defensive play of co-captains Jack Skin-ner and Charlie Mott was displayed throughoutthe '46 season.

BASKETBALLThis year's basketball team started out under a new

coach, Paul Selby. They won the first three games insuccessive order against Hillside, Rahway, and Linden.Cranford cooled off and then played mediocre ball andfinished the schedule with eight wins and nine losses. The team had four lettermen from the '46 squad.

The set shots of Norm Koury, the left-handed hook

shots of Bill Bennis and the under the basket work ofStan Weilmid gathered over 400 points for the blue andgold. Jack Skinner and Murray Terrill rounded out thestarting quintet. The remainder of the squad consistedof Boh Giobengeiser, Ernie Hobbie, Al Skaarup, JimDaubert and Tom Anderson.

HOCKEY

When the '47 ice hockey season drew to a dose, wefound the pucksters a very sad and disappointed group.During one of the mildest winters ever encountered, aschedule of one game was completed and that resultedin a five point defeat to a superior Morristown Prepschool.

It is unfortunate that Old Man Winter so poorly co-operated, as a fine season had been anticipated. Withthe return of seven lettermen, plus the co-captainingof Hughes and Ousterman, the team undoubtedly couldhave reached the top.

BASEBALL

The 1946 baseball team, under the faithful coachingof Paul Buonaguro, had a season- record of 6 victories andS defeats.

Buonaguro Bombers were sparked by the fine playingof Ray Cosmos, 2nd baseman; shortstop, John Noske, 3rdbaseman, Nemo Koury; rookies 1st sacker, Tom Anderson;and catcher, Joe Lanza, who formed the infield combination which averaged one double play per game. The highflies and outfield hits were capably handled by BcrnicSwanekamp, Wes Weluenberg, John Thatcher and DaveFinch. To be highly commended, was the rubber armedpitcher. Jot Koon. Joe pitched 13 out of 14 games, completing 12. He pitched his way almost to the highschool Hall of Fame when he pitched a one-hitter againstThomas Edison Vocational School. Among other games,Joe pitched 2 two hitters, 2 three, and 2 four hitters.

Excitement reached its peak when the team was toplay Linden, winner of eight straight games. The gamewent into extra innings, Cranford won 2-1 and Koonpitched 14 strikeouts. GIRLS' ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION

The Girls' Athletic Association, familiarlyknown as the G.A.A., is an organization for girlswho are interested in participating in intramuralsports. The backbone of the club is the Council, which consists of the officers plus six membersfrom each of the four classes. Miss Jeanette Sekt-berg and Miss Jean Voorhees are the. capableand enthusiastic leaders.

The fall season ushered in a hockey tourna-ment with one hundred sixty girls participating.During the season, many had bumps and bruisesto show for their efforts. The final game was aglorious one for the juniors as they upset an un-defeated senior team.

A short season of volley ball followed, afterwhich came the ever popular sport, basketball. Al-together two-hundred sixty-four girls participatedin a tournament in which every class team playedevery other class team. The championship wasdetermined by having the winning team from

each class play a round-robin tournament. Of-ficials for the games were girls taking a coursefor this purpose.

One of the highlights of the year was the in-auguration of several playdays with other schoolsincluding Railway, Roselle, and Madison. An-other big event was the student-faculty gamewhich provided amusement for all.

Spring brought the familiar blue shorts andwhite shirts outside once again. This time themain sport was baseball. Also, the girls partici-pated in badminton, archery, and tennis.

The annual alumni Playday was held again thisyear during the Christmas vacation. Girls fromthe classes of '45 and '46 attended. Everyoneenjoyed playing basketball and eating supperwhich was provided by the G.A.A.

The officers for this year were President, NancyJacobus; Vice-president, Erma Allison; Secretary,Alice Moore; Treasurer, Barbara Kaiser.

1941-1941The curtain was just rising on the high school

career of the class of '47 when America entered

World War II. Although the actual combat was

distant, C.II.S. nevertheless felt the repercussions.

The trusty, old P.A. system began advertising

war bonds and stamps in addition to requesting

John Student to "report to the office immediately

after the announcements". Cranford's Junior

Red Cross boasted a 100'i membership, and

Entre Nous adopted a war-devastated French

school. In classrooms, forums on international

affairs became frequent occurrences.

Not all time was dedicated to serious things,

and, in the midst of wartime changes, C.H.S.

was still able to retain many peacetime traditions.

We had class dances. Junior Proms, basketball

and football games (although the band's out-of-

town travel was sharply curtailed.) The C.H.S.

Photography Club continued with its annual

salons.

In spite of the coal shortage, C.H.S. managed

some assemblies . . . the traditional Christmas

program and the lighting of the Ajello candle . . .

the National Honor Society initiation . . . music

assemblies . . . Mask and Bauble presentations

. . . and the awarding of athletic letters and

trophies. When the fuel shortage cased, the As-

sembly Program Committee presented many

more fine programs, often featuring guest per-

formers and speakers, one of whom was Carroll

Glenn. (A "bang "-up assembly.)

The war progressed, slowly, relentlessly. Dur-

ing those years the Student Council continued

its numerous services to the school. Open houses

after basketball and football games were insti-

tuted, and a new handbook, the first in several

years, was published.

The death of President Roosevelt, at a crucial

moment in the war, was a great shock, but a few

months later a goal that he had labored for was

attained; Germany surrendered. The first big

milestone on the road to final victory, V-E Day,

had been reached. World events raced at an in-

credible pace. The diabolical wonder of the

atom bomb burst upon the modern civilization;

after anxious days of waiting, Y-J Day was of-

ficially announced, and American troops turned

homeward.

The class of '47 began its junior year in a world

theoretically at peace. That fall a new tradition

began, the "Sadie and Emma Follies" sponsored

by the Hi-Y, bringing enjoyment to both audi-

ence and cast. A new club for girls, the Tri-Y,

formed and elected Jean Thomen as the first

president. In the spring the C.H.S. trackmen

captured the national 440 title, a fitting climax

to an extraordinary season.

At the second "Sadie and Emma Follies", in

the fall of 1946, a new musical aggregation burst

upon the listening world . . . Bob Johnson's band!

(Need we say more?) Amusing incidents, how-

ever, were not the only foundation of student

life. Columbus Day, Cranford turned out for a

gala Welcome Home celebration which had a

unique mixture of dignity and mirth. The prob-

lem of juvenile delinquency was thoroughly ex-

amined in forums, and Sergeant Ben Kuroki's

"59th Mission" made a poignant impression on

all who heard him. 1947 was moving to a close.

Yes, indeed, we have had our work, but we have

had our fun in C.H.S., too. There will never be

another six years like them.

Are you one of the fortunate Cranford High School graduates who will soon be

college-bound? College will not only be an exciting experience which you will always

remember, but what is more important, statistics show that a higher education is

more necessary if you are to succeed in the competitive world of today.

Fortunate indeed is the high school graduate who, because of the farsightedness of his

parents, now has the necessary money ready and waiting for his college enrollment.

Thousands of boys and girls are now receiving a college education because Dad and

Mother made sure of their opportunity through systematic savings under the Acacia

Mutual Educator Plan. It is a safe and inexpensive way of making sure that, finan-

cially, you will get through those four vital years.

Even now, Dad can assure your coming college years by taking out additional insur-

ance on his own life which will provide a safety fund for you in the event that

something should happen to him before your education is completed.

This additional insurance, which will see you through until that great day when you

get your degree, can later be utilized by Dad and Mother as retirement income.

Acacia Mutual's retirement income plans beginning at JJ, 60 or 61 years of age

represent the finest investment available today. If by chance, the "folks" should

miss this advertisement, be sure to call it to their attention.
