PRESIDENT’S CORNER The 5th annual Raytown SummerFest & 22nd annual Raytown State Championship BBQ
Cookoff was held on June 10 and 11. A big thank you to all the sponsors who helped
make this event a huge success. Mother nature held off the rains during the actual event
times, probably the first time in a very long time. The comments we have received so far
on the event have been wonderful. I have volunteers who have not helped in the past call
and say count me in for next year. The letter to most of the downtown businesses went
out the week after the event – thanking them for their patience. At the time of this
printing, we are almost done with sending out 200 thank you cards to volunteers and
sponsors.
Each year I am asked questions about the event and this year decided to share some of
the most interesting tidbits I could think of: 1. 46 BBQ teams, 63 judges (55 are KCBS Certified) 65 vendors
2. Over 1,100 hours of volunteer time between setup, the actual event and tear down (does not include all meetings, etc. leading up to the week before the event or staff time) 3. 77 Volunteer Vouchers claimed
4. 35 free sandwich coupons used
5. 165 pre-ordered lunches & 37 guests from the Raytown Rotary Club
6. 3,184 pounds of ice
7. 720 bags of chips
8. 270 pounds of beans, 108 pounds of cole slaw & 180 pounds of potato salad
9. 300 slabs of ribs, 350 sausage links, 300 lbs of brisket & 200 lbs of pulled pork
and 150 whole chickens
10. 300 packages of hamburger/hot dog buns & 35 loaves of bread
11. 33 cases of water (for volunteers)
12. 1 - 42’ x 160’ tent & the use of the District Council #3 hall used for judging
13. 22 porta potties & 8 large trash dumpsters
14. 21,000 flyers
15. Over 1,000 4 page partial color marketing piece with the Raytown Times
The Committee will have a post meeting in July and then take a month off. We will meet
again in September to discuss 2012. Let me know if you have any questions. I would
love to hear your comments especially if you worked a shift, brought out your family or
even just as a sponsor.
If there is anything I can do, please do not hesitate to contact me. My door is always
open, come by anytime!
Vicki Turnbow, President

Our Members in the News During this year’s event, Mayor David Bower announced that
Ben and Barbara Carmack were named Raytown Citizen of
the Year. It has become a tradition to announce the winner
of this prestigious award during SummerFest.
Larry Pinkston, Manager of Store Operations and Audrey
Engeman, Human Resources Manager for Hy-Vee were on
hand to help pass out all the ribbons, trophies and cash prizes
to all the winners. The BBQ Team that took home the Grand Champion trophy and $1,500 cash prize was
“R Butts R Smokin”. A big thank you to Hy-Vee for being the BBQ Sponsor again this year. Even with the
economy still being a little sluggish, Raytown Chamber members stepped up to the sponsorship challenge and by
doing so put on an event the Chamber and City can be proud of!
Welcome!

AUGUST 24 - MEMBERSHIP LUNCHEON "ARE WE THERE YET?: THE ECONOMIC RECOVERY AS A VACATION DESTINATION"
- Now that we are entering the second half of the year that was supposed to be
the one during which we recovered we are asking what happened.
Why is employment so slow, when do we start worrying about inflation?
Why does Greece matter to us? Will the elections make things better or worse?
These are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to economic curiosity.
The program will be presented by Dr. Chris Kuehl. Dr. Kuehl is a Managing Director of Armada Corporate Intelligence.
He provides forecasts and strategic guidance for a wide variety of corporate clients around the world. He is the chief
economist for several national and international organizations. Don’t miss this important program on August 24!
