SAMARITAN CENTER NEWS:

We have added August 28! First of all, we would like to thank everyone who has contributed so generously to our Samaritan Center fund raising efforts. We have done so well that we have funded our three scheduled meals for 2016! But...there was still a need. So when the Samaritan Center asked us to consider sponsoring an "orphan" meal, we said yes! It is Sunday, August 28th. I realize this is the same day as our Community Meal, but if you feel torn, you might consider "a day of service"? (To quote Mother Carrie) Our other meals are September 17 and November 5. So it will be a busy fall. Thank you all, Clinnie Poole and Laurel Iavarone

MASS ON THE GRASS!

Our annual Mass on the Grass will be held on Wednesday, July 13th! Please bring your lawn chairs, picnic supplies, and a dish to pass, as we will enjoy a potluck dinner after the service.

CORN ROAST:

Save the date--August 6th, 5 p.m. for our next corn roast. Our menu this year will be roasted corn, sausage with peppers and onions, hot dogs & coneys, salt potatoes, watermelon and beverage. Lawn games and other activities to be determined. The cost will be the same--$6.00 per person with children under 6 free and a maximum of $20 per family. There is a sign-up sheet posted on the bulletin board by the kitchen. August 6th is also the day that the 11th bishop of the Diocese will be elected, so we should learn at the corn roast who that will be. Hope to see you there! ~ Ron & Jan Sager

NEW COFFEE HOUR VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! We are looking for people to volunteer to help with coffee after the 8 a.m. service beginning October 2nd, as we are down in volunteers. New people may sign up on the bulletin board outside the kitchen in the time slot of your choosing, or email Sarah in the office to sign you up. Coffee and tea are provided weekly, and a basket is provided to defray the cost to the church. To serve in the coffee hour ministry, all you need to do is provide snacks, make coffee, and bring in a bottle of juice for the kids and some paper products. Usually there are 2 people

helping after the 8am service and 1 after the 10:15am service. The coffee coordinators are Cathy Labucki - 8 a.m. and Phil Iavarone - 10:15. Please contact them with any questions. Please consider signing up to help. The more volunteers we have, the lighter the load for the current volunteers. Thank you! *****************************************************************************************

BOOK CLUB AT ST. MATTHEW’S

Our next book club selection is Being Mortal, by Atul Gawande. We will meet July 14th at 6pm.

In his bestselling books, Atul Gawande, a practicing surgeon, has fearlessly revealed the struggles of his profession. Now he examines its ultimate limitations and failures—in his own practices as well as others’—as life draws to a close. And he discovers how we can do better. He follows a hospice nurse on her rounds, a geriatrician in his clinic, and reformers turning nursing homes upside down. He finds people who show us how to have the hard conversations and how to ensure we never sacrifice what people really care about. Riveting, honest, and humane, Being Mortal shows that the ultimate goal is not a good death but a good life—all the way to the very end. – Amazon.com

ALTAR FLOWERS:

Please consider donating for altar flowers. Memorials and thanksgivings will be noted in that week’s bulletin and stated during the Prayers of the People. The cost of each arrangement is $25. Please use the envelope provided next to the flower book located on the desk near the coat rack. Multiple arrangments can go on the altar, so don’t be afraid to sign up on a date that is already filled. Help make our sanctuary a beautiful place to worship! Any questions? Contact

Gail at 491-3999 or email [email protected].

PLEASE SIGN UP FOR “SUNDAY PUNCH”:

As we have done in the past, during the summer months we do not have regular coffee hour assignments. Because of this, we rely on parishioners to sign up for “Sunday Punch”. This doesn’t require a huge meal, but rather something simple, of your choosing, that can be enjoyed during coffee hour. Parishioners may be traveling, and attendance may be lower, but we still like our treats during coffee hour! Please consider signing up on the bulletin board, to bring something in for at least one Sunday! See Sarah Alamond, in the office with any questions.

BISHOP SEARCH 5th CANDIDATE ANNOUNCED!

On June 20th, 2016, the Standing Committee of the Episcopal Diocese of Central New York announced its consent to the addition, by petition, of a fifth candidate for the position of eleventh Bishop of Central New York. The candidate, the Reverend Dena Cleaver-Bartholomew, rector of Christ Church in Manlius, New York, underwent the same interviews, background checks, and reference checks as the candidates nominated by the Search Committee. The Reverend Dena Cleaver-Barthlomew Christ Church, Manlius NY The Episcopal Diocese of Central New York The Rev. Dena Cleaver-Bartholomew grew up in a military family and found her home in the Church. As a cradle Episcopalian, she was active in congregations in several states, particularly a small parish in the Blue Ridge Mountains that developed the gifts of its members. Ordained to the priesthood in 1989 from the Diocese of Central Pennsylvania, she has served in parishes ranging from 75 to 1,000 in Sunday attendance, in urban locations from Atlanta to Akron, in small rust belt towns in Michigan and Ohio, and in suburban churches outside Los Angeles and Atlanta. Dena has served the Church bi-vocationally, as a full time Associate, and now as the Rector of Christ Church in Manlius, where she led a successful capital campaign, increased stewardship, oversaw the restoration of historic stained glass windows, and addressed deferred maintenance. She is a collaborative leader, gifted preacher, has strong administrative skills, extensive adult and youth formation experience, and a passion for congregational development. In the Diocese of Central New York, Dena is the Chair of the Commission on Ministry, was a General Convention Deputy, and co-founded the Diocesan Anti-Racism Team. She served on the Congregational Development Commission and Diocesan Council in Ohio. A summa cum laude graduate of Temple University, Dena earned a Master of Divinity from Yale University, a Master of Theology from Emory University magna cum laude, and is finishing a Doctor of Ministry program at Emory University in Church Leadership and Community Witness. Dena is married to David. He is ordained in the United Church of Christ and is Pastor of Zion Lutheran in New Hartford. David has a Ph.D. in Old Testament. They have two daughters. Audrey, 21, is a missioner for Young Adult Service Corps. Lydia, 18, is a student at Ohio Wesleyan University. Dena enjoys yoga and power walking, is an avid reader, and loves traveling with her family. Rev. Cleaver-Barthlomew joins the following slate of candidates, whose profiles we published previously:

*************************************************************************************** BISHOP SKIP RESPONDS TO ORLANDO TRAGEDY: "Continue To Be The Presence Of Christ’s Love." Bishop Skip, 6/14/2016 Dear People of Central New York,

In the wake of the horrors perpetrated in Orlando, I once again find myself struggling with the presence of evil in the world. As I write, details are still emerging, but the powers of evil lying behind this act of terror seem to include homophobia, claimed ties with extremist Islam, domestic abuse, the availability of assault weapons, and perhaps untreated mental illness.

In our baptismal liturgy we promise to “renounce the evil powers of this world which corrupt and destroy the creatures of God” and “to follow and obey Jesus as our Lord.” At all times, but especially now, we can fulfill these promises by making our living faith evident in our words and actions.

You may recall the words of Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, who said after meeting with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., “I felt like my feet were praying.” So please, join me in prayer and action. We pray for the victims, for their families, and for the first responders who experience their own trauma. We pray for our Muslim neighbors who will receive undeserved backlash. We pray for our LGBTQ brothers and sisters who are grieving, angry and afraid. We pray for our enemies, for those with whom we disagree, and for those who react to this horror in fear and hatred. And we pray for all people who will respond to evil by working with love and renewed diligence for God’s peace and justice on the earth.

We must not react to the powers of evil and violence with hateful words or deeds. As disciples, we respond to evil with good, respond to hate with acts of love that show our respect for the dignity of every human being. As hard as it may be, especially so soon after such a tragedy, our Lord even calls us to pray for our enemies. Such prayer is not acquiescence or even passive resignation; it is how we become the presence of God’s love in the world.

As your prayer and conscience lead you, continue to be the presence of Christ’s love anywhere you may be. Be a voice of hope. Be a voice of calm and reason. Be thoughtful; be kind. Above all, know that we are held in God’s deep embrace by the one who promises never to let us go. In Christ,
