ViaRhôna is a cycle route almost 815 km long, linking Lake Geneva with the Mediterranean along the river Rhône.
Completion of 621 km by early 2017, with some unfinished sections limiting the full route to more experienced cyclists, but most stages are suitable for a range of holidays and days out. There are endless tourist gems…from gorges and moutain ranges of the Pays du Léman to the Bugey mountains, urban river banks in central Lyon, the Rhône valley’s vineyards and orchards, Provence and the Camargue at the southern tip of the route, ending on the shores of the Medi-terranean.
ViaRhôna ist ein Fernradweg ent-lang der Rhone von fast 815 km und verbindet den Genfer See mit dem Mittelmeer.
Anfang 2017 sind 621 km fertiggestellt, doch bleiben noch einige unvollendete Abschnitte. Deshalb ist die komplette Strecke nur erfahrenen Radfahrern vorbehalten. Zahlreiche Etappen bieten sich jedoch bereits für alle Arten von Urlaub und Ausflügen an: Schluchten und Bergmassive ab dem Genferseege-biet bis zum Bugey-Massiv, Uferprome-naden im Herzen von Lyon, Weinberge und Obstgärten im Rhonetal, im Süden die Provence und Camargue bis zu den Stränden des Mittelmeers. For 2000 years, the Rhône has facilitated every exchange between Europe and the Mediterranean.
Long before the lavish river boats of Antiquity, the river was already plied by single-hulled craft. From long horse-drawn convoys in medieval times to the great families of boatmen, from steamboat companies to the massive container-carrying barges of the 21st century, the whole history of the Rhône reflects human adventure. This route of exchange and trade has developed over centuries, affecting towns along its way. Vestiges from every historical period sit alongside heritage, skills, art and local traditions. From the ancient Theatre at Vienne to the brand new musée des Confluences in Lyon via Pont d’Avignon, the hill-top villages of the Rhône valley and the medieval town of Aigues-Mortes, the Rhône certainly deserves being known as the river of civilisations. Lange vor den reichen Flussschiffern der Antike fuhren bereits Einbäume auf der Rhone. Die Geschichte der Rhone erzählt auch von den Abenteuern der Menschheit, von langen Treidelstrecken im Mittelalter zu den großen Flussschifferfamilien, von Dampfschifffahrtsgesellschaften bis hin zu den Containertransporten des 21. Jahrhunderts. Dieser Handels- und Tauschweg hat sich über Jahrhunderte weiter entwickelt und zum Aufschwung oder Niedergang der Städte auf seiner Strecke beigetragen. Alle Epochen sind vertreten, und mit ihnen das Kulturgut, die Techniken, die Kunst und lokale Traditionen. Swimming can be enjoyed at the many leisure centres along the Rhône. It is a favourite activity at the seaside resorts of Port-Saint-Louis-du-Rhône, Le Grau-du-Roi, La Grande-Motte, Carnon, Palavas-les-Flots, Frontignan and Sète.
Canoeing is available on the Haut Rhône, offering guided trips down the Vieux Rhône. Also noteworthy are the artificial rivers of the Ile de la Serre at Porcieu en Isère and of Saint-Pierre-de-Bœuf to the south of Lyon, the Espace Eco-pagayeur in Le Grau-du-Roi (nautical interpretation trail) and the lagoons of the Hérault’s coastline.
Sailing, windsurfing, paddle boarding are all offered in various leisure centres along the Rhône and notably at the Vallée Bleue (Montalieu-Vercieu), the leisure centre of Les Roches-de-Condrieu (water teleskiing) and at the Grand Parc Miribel Jonage as well as many sites along the Mediterranean coast.
Rowing : lots of clubs offer rowing as an activity, from the Haut-Rhône to Bellegarde-sur-Valserine and notably at Belley-Virignin and to the south of Lyon, at Vienne, Valence or Avignon.
Boating : get on board the cruise boats, on the Haut-Rhône and the Savière canal as far as the Lac du Bourget; in Lyon where you can explore the banks of the Rhône and the Saône ; in Vienne as well as in Valence and further south, from Avignon to Arles. Sailing too, with the Epervière marina in Valence, the ports of Viviers and Tournon-sur-Rhône and in the Gard, on the Petit Rhône, the Canal du Rhône at Sète and the étang de Thau not forgetting Port-Camargue, La Grande Motte, Palavas-les-Flots , Frontignan and Sète.

Gastronomy finds its historic foundations in the high quality produce that comes from terroirs along the Rhône. A trip along the ViaRhôna also means discovering these specialities and produce from each area, the local savoir-faire and world-renowned chefs, like Anne Sophie Pic in Valence, as well as the abundance of traditional restaurants, starting with Lyon’s “bouchons”.
From north to south, the list of products is mouth-watering : Saint Genis brioche, Rhône valley fruits, Valrhona chocolate, Ardèche chestnuts, Montélimar nougat, olives from Provence, black truffles from the Tricastin and the Vaucluse, rice, salt, Camargue bull meat, Bouzigues oysters, mussels and, more recently, oysters, from Carteau… not forgetting all those local products that make up cyclists’ picnics.
However, these local products would be nothing without the wines which accompany them… and each area has its very own! Even the Romans knew that the sunny hillsides along the river were perfect for growing grapes, from the vines that cling to the slopes of Savoie’s and Le Bugey’s mountains to the vineyards of the Côtes du Rhône, where they are grown on terraced land to the south of Lyon as far as Châteauneuf-du-Pape, on through the vineyards of Costières de Nîmes and finally, the Vin des Sables grown by the seaside. Appreciate the amazing landscapes and skills of the wine growers during fascinating visits.

Und nicht zu vergessen die lokalen Erzeugnisse, die den Fahrradtouristen reichhaltige Picknicks bescheren.
Doch diese lokalen Produkte wären nichts ohne die guten Weine, die dazu passen. Jedem Gebiet sein eigener Wein! Die Römer wussten es bereits: Sonnige Hänge am Fluss sind die idealen Lagen für den Weinbau. Von den Reben der Berghänge in Savoyen und Bugey bis zu den Weinterrassen der Côtes-du-Rhône im Süden von Lyon bis nach Châteauneuf-du-Pape, oder den Weinbergen der Costières de Nimes bis zum Vin des Sables am Meeresufer, werden Ihnen die außergewöhnlichen Landschaften und das Savoir-faire der Winzer unvergessliche Momente bescheren.

From north to south along the river Rhône, landscapes are constantly revisited: the hills around Geneva, Chautagne’s poplar groves, the last foothills of the Jura with the Grand Colombier mountain range, Dauphiné’s plains and hills, Lyon’s urban parks, then to the south, orchards and vineyards leading to Provencal landscapes and its famous lavender until the grand finale of the Camargue and the shores of the Mediterranean.
The Rhône is a fast-flowing and powerful river which has been widely canalised in the past, notably to the south of Lyon, in order to facilitate navigation, flood protection and to exploit its energy potential. Today, thanks in part to the ViaRhôna cycle route, the river is revitalised and better protected. Previously hidden natural treasures have been enhanced and developed, respecting the local wildlife: the lônes or branches of the Rhône, which shelter magnificent natural sites, including wetlands of the Lavour marshes, the splendid Camargue and the 2200 hectares of the Grand Parc Miribel Jonage. A number of islands and river loops have become nature reserves equipped with educational and observation trails along the river, giving the public a chance to get closer to this major water course and its associated ecosystems. The unique natural environment of the saltwater lagoons, on the coast, is as delicate as it is cherished.
Die Strecke entlang der Rhone von Nord nach Süd ist durch stetig wechselnde Landschaften geprägt: die Hügel der Genferseeregion, die Pappelhaine von Chautagne, die letzten Jura-Ausläufer mit dem Bergmassiv Grand Colombier, Täler und Hügel des Dauphiné, die Stadtparks in Lyon, dann im Süden Obstplantagen, Weinberge bis in die provenzalischen Landschaften mit den legendären Lavendelfeldern und schließlich als Höhepunkt die Camargue und die Mittelmeerufer.
Der starke und turbulente Strom Rhone wurde in der Vergangenheit weitgehend kanalisiert, insbesondere im Süden von Lyon, für eine bessere Navigation, den Schutz gegen Hochwasser, und um das Energiepotenzial auszuschöpfen. Heute wird der Fluss, unter anderem durch den Fernradweg ViaRhôna, neu entdeckt und besser geschützt. Bestimmte verkannte Naturschätze werden aufgewertet und unter Erhaltung der lokalen Flora und Fauna ausgebaut: Die Lônes, Nebenarme der Rhone, beherbergen großartige Naturschätze, von den Feuchtgebieten des Marais de Lavours über 2 200 ha Natur des Grand Parc Miribel Jonage bis zu den Stätten der Camargue. Einige Inseln und Mäander des Flusses wurden in Naturschutzgebiete mit Naturlehrpfaden und Beobachtungsstationen am Fluss umgewandelt, damit man diesen großen Strom und seine Ökosysteme besser kennenlernen kann. Die einzigartige natürliche Umgebung der Salzwasserlagunen an der Küste ist empfindlich und wertvoll.

Quite a challenging bike ride, especially on the section from Saint Gingolph to Seyssel. The route, which runs alongside Lake Geneva, is only suitable for experienced cyclists. After that, the route offers lovely greenways that are accessible to everyone, between Seyssel and Groslée and through Le Grand Parc Miribel Jonage, as far as Lyon. Care is needed on the Belley – Groslée stage,on a very busy road through the tunnels at La Balme and Virignin and over the road bridge which crosses the Rhône.
Diese Fahrradroute ist insgesamt sportlich, insbesondere der Abschnitt von Saint Gingolph bis nach Seyssel. Die Strecke entlang des Genfer Sees ist nur erfahrenen Radfahrern vor-behalten. Anschließend finden Sie für alle zugängliche autofreie Radwege zwischen Seyssel und Groslée und an den Toren von Lyon durch den Grand Parc Miribel Jonage. After a bike tour of Lyon, this next section of the ViaRhôna confirms why it is known as the “route of civilisations”. Beyond Givors, it is accessible to all cyclists, weaving through an area full of interesting places: Vienne Saint-Romain-en-Gal, with its Gallo-Roman ves-tiges, Valence, Ville d’Art et Histoire and gateway to the South of France, surrounded by orchards and famed vineyards on sunny hillsides.

The train is strongly recommended for the first 20 km between Lyon and Givors, after which the route becomes less challenging and continues mostly as a greenway, except for some shared road sections, especially when entering Sablons, at the Roche de Glun dam and in Valence. At Pont de l’Isère, the ViaRhôna crosses the Vallée de l’Isère cycle route leading to Romans.

This colourful section introduces a gentle cycle towards Provence. It touches lovely historic towns and follows the unspoilt Rhône, which snakes through orchards and other southern crops. Part of the route through the Vaucluse as far as Avignon is on a temporary section of the ViaRhona, with signage due in Spring 2017.

At La Voulte-sur-Rhône, the ViaRhôna joins the Dolce Via cycle route. Between Bollène and Avignon the route partially follows its final course as well as provisional sections on green ways, which are shared with light traffic, but there are also several segments on busy roads in urban Avignon.
Ab La Voulte-sur-Rhône wird die ViaRhôna mit dem Radweg La Dolce Via verbunden. Von Bollène nach Avignon führt die Strecke teilweise auf der endgültigen Route und auf provisorischen autofreien Abschnitten, geteilten Straßen mit wenig Verkehrsaufkommen, aber auch auf einigen verkehrsreichen Strecken im Stadtgebiet von Avignon.

Printegarde nature reserve at La Voulte-sur-Rhône, a stunning natural site. Rochemaure footbridge, now a rope bridge, where the route begins in the capital of
nougat, Montélimar. Viviers and Bourg-Saint-Andéol, deep in southern Vivarais and part of the Pays d’Art
et d’Histoire label. Bourg-Saint-Andéol links the itinerary to the Caverne du Pont d’Arc at the heart of the Gorges de l’Ardèche.
The Crocodile Farm in Pierrelatte, only one of its kind in Europe. Orange and its UNESCO-listed heritage and, further south via the Provence à Vélo
network, the famous Châteauneuf du Pape wine area. Avignon, cradle of Medieval Christianity, still boasts an amazing heritage, including the
Palais des Papes, and the famous bridge which are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Leaving Avignon, romantic Cité des Papes, this section takes you straight to the southern banks of the Rhône and in particular to the Mediterranean in Occitanie. The temporary ViaRhôna route (shared roads) between Avignon (Vaucluse) and Gallician (Gard) will be accessible from June 2017. The route then continues from Gallician to Le-Grau-Du-Roi, offering an itinerary through the Camargue Gardoise, Grand Site de France. Taking the old towpaths of the Canal du Rhône to Sète, you will reach Le-Grau-Du-Roi via Aigues-Mortes, then Palavas-les-Flots. Access as far as the port of Sète, winding between beaches and saltwater lagoons, is not yet complete.

At Beaucaire a 7 km greenway to Montfrin is accessible. From Gallician, 2 discovery cycle tracks (17 and 23 km) and a 7 km green way wich leads to the picturesque village of Cailar and Vauvert station. The route through Le Grau-du-Roi presents some difficulties (no mar-kings). The cycle track follows the D255 to the Pont des Abîmes. You will then cycle along the seafront at La Grande-Motte on a cycle track shared with pedestrians (care needed) to join up with the fantastic Lido cycle track between La Grande-Motte and Carnon-Plage.
In Beaucaire ist heute eine autofreie Strecke von 7 km bis nach Montfrin zugänglich. In Gal-lician führen zwei Entdeckungsrundwege (17 und 23 km) sowie eine autofreie Strecke von 7 km zum pittoresken Dörfchen Le Cailar und dem Bahnhof in Vauvert. This is the Carmargue at last, with its lagoons, rice beds and salt works, and criss-crossed with canals leading to Mediterranean beaches. The temporary ViaRhôna route (shared roads) from Avignon to Arles via Fourques (Gard) will be accessible in June 2017. After that, the ViaRhôna is developed between Arles and Port-Saint-Louis-du-Rhône apart from the 5 km to the north of Port-Saint-Louis-du-Rhône.

Extreme care needed on the very dangerous D35 road to Port-St-Louis. As you cycle through town, turn right off the road into rue Lamartine towards Port Abri du Rhône close to where you will find a cycle-friendly track along the Rhône as far as the lift bridge from where the cycle route leads to the beach.
Vorsicht: Die D35 nach Port-St-Louis ist eine sehr gefährliche Straße. Verlassen Sie die D35 auf Ihrem Weg durch die Stadt und nehmen Sie rechts die Rue Lamartine in Richtung Port Abri du Rhône. Dort finden Sie einen für Radfahrer ausgebauten Weg am Rhone-Ufer bis zur Hubbrücke, wo der Radweg zum Strand anfängt.

Arles, Ville d’Art et d’Histoire, is listed by UNESCO as a world heritage site for its ancient centre and collection of Roman and Romanesque monuments. Amongst other places, see the Ancient Arles museum and the Musée Réattu.
The Vigueirat marshes at Mas-Thibert : protected natural site, with facilities for rambling and horse riding (accessible from the ViaRhôna via a 2.5 km cycle track).
