In 2018, the NEC will send its champion to the NCAA FCS playoffs for the ninth year running. Rob- ert Morris was the first NEC team to compete in the FCS national championship bracket, doing so in 2010. RMU also contested the first postseason game in the league’s history - the 1996 ECAC Football Classic. After claiming the inaugural Northeast Conference football crown, Robert Morris edged MAAC champion, and cross-town rival, Duquesne, now a NEC member, 28-26, in the 1996 ECAC Clas- sic, the first-ever postseason game in conference annals. The game went on hia- tus from 1998-2000 before Sacred Heart bested Duquesne in the 2001 Classic in Pittsburgh. The Dukes returned to the ECAC game as the MAAC representative for each of the next two seasons. Albany defeated Duquesne, 24-0, in the 2002 postseason before DU bounced back to edge Monmouth, 12-10, in the final ECAC Classic on November 22, 2003. In 2006, Monmouth hosted San Diego as the West Coast met the Jersey Shore in the first-ever Gridiron Classic broadcast live by CSTV. Jim Harbaugh’s Toreros prevailed in West Long Branch, 27-7, as the NEC and Pio- neer Football League began a tradition that pitted the champion of each conference against one another in a post-season battle. The original agreement between the two conferences instated the exempted postseason football game for the 2006 and 2007 seasons. Following a successful inaugural game, the two leagues extended the agreement through 2009 at which time the Gridiron Classic was disbanded as the NEC was awarded automatic qualification into the FCS Championship. 2016 JERRY RiCE aWaRDDUQUEsnE ‘s aJ hinEs makEs nEC hisToRY, BEComEs FiRsT FCs lEGaCY aWaRDs RECipiEnT (STATS) - Perhaps by the time the FCS’ top freshman is done with his college career, there will be a second “Hines” Field in Pittsburgh.

Duquesne running back A.J. Hines was named Monday as the 2016 STATS FCS Jerry Rice Award winner, edging South Dakota State linebacker Christian Ro-zeboom by a single vote for the nation’s best freshman.

A national panel of over 150 sports information and media relations directors, broadcasters, writers and other dignitaries voted on the Rice Award, which had 23 finalists from 12 FCS conferences.

Playing a few miles away across the Allegheny River from Heinz Field, the home of the Steelers, Hines was a big reason the Dukes won a share of a second straight Northeast Conference title. He ran for a Duquesne freshman-record 1,291 yards and 13 touchdowns, the most in either category by any Dukes running back since senior Mike Hilliard (1,544 yards, 15 TDs) in 2003.

Nicknamed “Baby Gurley” at Wilson, North Carolina’s Fike High School, after former Georgia and current Los Angeles Rams tailback Todd Gurley, Hines hadn’t even heard of Duquesne until last summer. He was initially a Richmond recruit, but instead of doing a semester of prep school and hoping to eventu-ally qualify, Hines answered a call from Duquesne.

The Dukes are glad he did.

Hines got 30 first-place votes from the panel and needed every one of them, finishing with 333 overall points - one more than Rozeboom. The Jackrabbits linebacker finished second while Sam Houston State receiver Nathan Stewart was third with 295 points despite amassing 25 first-place votes to Rozeboom’s 22.

Hines is the third running back to win in six years of the Jerry Rice Award’s ex-istence, joining Towson’s Terrance West (2011) and Fordham’s Chase Edmonds (2014). Northern Arizona quarterback Case Cookus was the 2015 recipient.

The Jerry Rice Award voting reflected the regular season and was conducted before the start of the FCS playoffs.
