Phil Mi ckelson put on anotherepic back-nine display of the mostdaring golf to win the MastersTournament on a pristine Sunday.Then his wife, Amy, heightenedthe emotion of the day with herfirst public appearance in 11months and a heart-wrenching hugfor the three-time champion.
Do you believe in karma?
“I’m a believer in a lot of thingsright now,” Amy said beforeemotion overtook her.
It had to end this way—especially on a week when onefamily’s tabloid saga got upstagedin the end by another family’sstorybook bond in the face ofcancer.
The fairy-tale finish eludedMickelson at last summer’s U.S.Open where he posted runner-upjust days before Amy underwentsurgery for her breast cancer.
But the Masters embracesmagic like nowhere else, and thisscript was better than most.
“I don't normally shed tearsover wins, and when Amy and Ihugged off 18, that was a veryemotional moment for us andsomething that I'll look back onand just cherish,” Mickelson said.
Asked what kind of boost thisvictory was for a family copingwith cancer, all Amy could do wasnod and start crying. Wordsweren't necessary.
It wasn't until Tuesday thatAmy even felt strong enough topack up the children and bringthem to Augusta. It's been 11months since the family wastogether at a golf tournament,and the support showed in theway Mickelson's game blossomedalong with the azaleas as theweek wore on.
While Amanda, Sohpie andEvan all joined their father forthe Par-3 Contest, Amy remainedat the house. The closest she got
