celebrate the attributes of
Responsibility, Inclusion &
Respect
Hello Aloma families,
Welcome to spring! April marks the last
third of our school year and our
students still have lots to experience
and learn. Continued focus on school
work is essential for our last three
months, even as they participate in the
exciting extra-curricular activities
happening at Aloma.
April continues to be filled with many
activities for students and parents. Our
OFIP tutoring is in full swing for our
grade 3 students as is our junior girls’
club and our primary and junior social
skills club. A number of extra-curricular
opportunities in both athletics and the
arts are in full swing and we are
preparing for our upcoming Jump Rope
for Heart kick off and our Fun Fair in
May. Read the article in this newsletter
to update you on happenings for
education week.
On April 11th students are encouraged
to wear pink to support inclusion and
anti-bullying, and on each Friday in April
students are asked to wear blue for
Autism Awareness month. As always, at
each character assembly students will
wear their green Aloma shirts.
With the warmer weather the water in
the creek behind our school runs quickly
and the water levels are higher. We
want our students to be safe. Please
remind children that walk to and from
school along the path/bridge to stick to
the path and avoid the creek. Also with
significant weather changes from
morning to afternoon students need to
be dressed for outdoor play. Dressing in
layers is ideal to adjust for cool
mornings and warmer afternoons.
A quick reminder to please call the safe
arrival line to report your child’s
absence, if your child is going to be late
or if you need to pick your child up early.
All of this reporting needs to be done
prior to 9:00am.
A change is coming to Aloma around how
we collect funds for food days, field
trips, etc. All schools in Peel are being
moved to a cashless system called Cash
Online. Training for Aloma will take
place in May and we will be live in June,
which means we will not be able to
accept cash at the school after that
time. Please watch for more information
about this change in May and June
newsletters.
I look forward to seeing families at our
school council meeting and our spring
concert.

Important changes coming to SafeArrival system in May 2018
The Peel District School Board is currently using the SafeArrival system by
Synervoice Technologies. As Synervoice has been sold to West Communications,
there will be slight changes to our SafeArrival system and how you will report your
child’s absence from school. The phone number to report your child’s absence will
stay the same, but there are a few other changes.
First, the transition to a new company and system will require parents to set up a new
account with School Messenger SafeArrival as data will not be transferred from the
old system to the new. More information on how and when to set-up your new ac-
count will be coming in the next month. Beginning on May 14, 2018, all elementary
school parents/guardians need to report the following to our new School Messenger
SafeArrival system:
Absences (less than 5 consecutive days)
Late arrivals/Early pick ups
The phone number will stay the same (855-209-6155). The website has changed to
(go.schoolmessenger.ca). Or you can Download a new School Messenger App
(from Google or Apple). Please be sure to delete the old Safe Arrival app after May
11, 2018.
Alerting this system, ensures that we are able to ensure the safety of your child in
a timely and efficient manor

Celebrate Administrative Professionals’ Day Wednesday, April 25th, 2018
Peel schools will pay tribute to administrative professionals on Administrative Professionals’ Day on April 25th, 2018.
The Peel board appreciates the important job administrative staff do each school day and April 25th pro-
vides an opportunity to give these individuals the recognition they deserve.
Aloma Crescent Public School Goes PINK on April 11
On Wednesday April 11, 2018, Peel District School Board schools will recognize Day of Pink. We celebrate Day of Pink at Aloma to remind everyone of the importance of Equity and Inclusion in their daily lives and how showing support for others can combat bullying. “Equity and inclusion is something that all Peel schools teach throughout the year and discuss with students daily—it is embedded in everything we do,” says Peter Joshua, director of education. “Day of Pink is just one more way for us to ensure students and staff learn, work and develop in environments that are safe, equitable, inclusive, respectful and nurturing for all.” Day of Pink began when a high school student in Cambridge, Nova Scotia, was bullied with homophobic language because he wore a pink shirt to school. The next day, hundreds of students at his school stood up to bullying and wore pink to school to show their support for equity and inclusion. Join us by wearing pink on April 11th.
We Welcome the World Centres The Peel District School Board’s We Welcome the World Centres located in Brampton, Malton and Mis-
sissauga, are the first point of contact for all newcomer families to become familiar with the educational
system in Peel. The centres are open all year—including the summer months— from Monday to Friday,
8 a.m. to 4 p.m. In addition to providing literacy and numeracy assessments, the We Welcome the
World Centres provide newcomers with a host of services including: reception, orientation, interpreta-
tion and referrals.
At each centre, parents/guardians and students will discover:
settlement service information
age and grade appropriate educational and related program resources
information about various community supports
translation of materials to support the reception and assessment process
What is Special Education Advisory
Committee (SEAC)
Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC) is a legislated committee that makes recom-mendations to the board on matters affecting the education programs and services for stu-dents with special needs. SEAC meets month-ly during the school year and consists of three trustees and representatives from organiza-tions within Peel. An important focus for SEAC members is to bring forward the views of their organizations and assist parents in navigating the school system. You can reach out to your trustees or the appropriate organization to discuss any matters regarding special education or join us at one of our monthly meetings. All meetings are open to the public and includes a set time for questions from the community. For more information about SEAC and the meeting schedule visit; http://peelschools.org/parents/specialed/specedac/Pages/default.aspx
Help us to Encourage and Enhance
Parent Involvement in Peel
Apply for a position on the board's Parent Involve-ment Committee The Peel board’s Parent Involvement Committee (PIC) meets regularly throughout the year to review the board’s plans for parent involvement as they relate to parent, family and community engage-ment, and to make suggestions to schools, councils and the board regarding additional parent outreach. As mandated by the ministry, the purpose of Peel board's PIC is to support, encourage, and enhance meaningful parental involvement, work collabora-tively with the school board to support student suc-cess, seek out the advice and ideas of school coun-cils, and other parents and partners, and to develop strategies for enhancing parental engagement and outreach. Parent application packages will be available on April 6 at www.peelschools.org/PIC. Forms must be returned by April 11th, 2018.

Keeping Children Safe in and around Storm Sewers, Waterways
Rising and fast moving water in lakes, ponds and creeks is increasingly likely during spring. Children playing in and around storm sewers and watercourses, entering storm sewers through the outfalls, and entering storm sewers through access covers is dangerous. The following information will help keep children safe: water flows in storm sewers and watercourses
are unpredictable and may change quickly toxic gases may be present in and around storm
sewers and watercourses access is restricted, making rescue attempts are
difficult tragic falls could take place Please review this information with your children and let them know how dangerous storms sewers and waterways are.

Raising Resilience
Resilience is an important part of well-being. It is being able to ‘bounce back’ from difficult times, setbacks, and other
significant challenges. It includes being able to deal effectively with pressure, and get through tough times.
Raising Resilience Tip:
Accept children & youth for who they are
Children and youth are more likely to be resilient if they feel accepted for who they are. Acceptance means we must resist
the temptation to judge and criticize. When people feel validated they feel worthy and valued, which means when they
encounter setbacks they will have the confidence to try again.
Letting children know specifically what you love about them or why you are proud of them can bolster resilience.
“I am so proud of how you treat others with respect. The way you encouraged your classmates outside the school this
afternoon made them feel so special!”
“You worked so hard at that activity today. I know you didn’t come first, but all that matters is that you tried hard – and it
looked to me like you gave it everything you had!”
When we let people know we accept and care for them, and offer them specifics, they feel like they can conquer anything!
