The City of Huron observed its 200th birthday in 2009. This event gave us the opportunity to take a look back at the rich tapestry of Huron‘s history. The year-long Bicentennial celebration brought together residents from throughout the community and the area to work on many different projects and events. It was an exciting summer, filled with memory-making events.

If you had listened very closely, there’s a sound you would have heard when an ensemble of skilled and dedicated people are working together toward a common goal. It’s an incredibly powerful moment, a triumph of the human spirit. That’s exactly what we experienced in our town this year.

And now its time to think about the future – a future that offers many challenges as well as exciting opportunities for growth.

Work was completed this fall on the four-bay boat launch ramp on the

Huron River with parking and facilities for 125 vehicles and boat trailers. Completed under the auspices of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, the ramps will be officially dedicated at ceremonies planned for April.

Despite these tough economic times, developers continue to look at the vacant Con Agra property. Studies have been completed on possible uses for the riverfront property and city officials are working to come up with a viable plan for developing this unique commercial area.

Thanks to an ingenious marketing program initiated by city manager Andy White and City Council, the Huron Corporate Park is now home to two new businesses, Denton ATD and News-2-You, and nearly all of the vacant lots have been sold.

Denton ATD is a manufacturer of test dummies for all sorts of vehicles and New-2-You brings innovative, on-line education program to children around the world. .

The Chamber of Commerce is enjoying steady growth and is

constantly seeking new ways to help its member businesses grow and prosper. Teaming up with the Business Resource Network and EHOVE Career Center , the Chamber is sponsoring an Ambassador program that joins city, school and chamber officials in an effort to open lines of communication with local businesses.

More of these visits are scheduled for this year.

The Chamber, in conjunction with Huron City Schools, published the annual City Directory late last fall. The 36-page color booklet is used as a

tourism publication and an answer book to questions newcomers and long-time residents may have about city or school services and schedules. They are available at the Chamber office, 509 Huron Street .

Steeped in history and rich in natural beauty, Huron offers the small-town ambience that so many people yearn for in these fast-paced times. As Huron moves toward its future, it will continue to cherish its past as one of the finest small town’s in America ’s heartland, while eagerly anticipating an exciting future.

Regular meetings of Huron City Council are held on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each and every month at 6:30 p.m. in the Huron City Hall, 417 Main Street, Huron, OH.

When a regular or special meeting falls on a recognized legal holiday, the meeting will be held the next day at the time and place designated above unless otherwise announced.
