Ever since I moved to Huron 13 years ago, I have heard sto-ries about a former Huron business called Myrtle’s. I also have heard bits and pieces about another, similar establishment that was run from a boat. Could this be a photo of that other business? I would like to gather some history on these two businesses of Huron’s past. Please share your knowledge and/or stories with me via e-mail at [email protected]. Thanks for your assistance in helping me under-stand more about Huron’s past.

The top-selling scouts in the Cub Scout Pack 31 pop-corn fund-raiser were rec-ognized at the Nov. 22 pack meeting. The top sellers were (showing their prizes, from left to right): Nicho-las Marksbury, Marc Dieter and Ayden Swinehart. Fifty-six cub scouts participated – selling more than $18,000 in popcorn. Seventy per-cent of the sales dollars go to support scouting. Cub Scout Pack 31 utilizes these funds to support scouting activities like the pinewood derby; spring campout; overnight at the Buffalo Navel Park; summer camp; awards; and den activities. They thank the community for its support.

The Christmas Tree decro-ated by the Huron Garden Club.
Christmas with SantaMark your calendars for “Christmas with
Santa.” This year’s event will be held from 3 to 8 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 11. Once again the Boat Basin will be decorated for the season. Santa will be arriving at 4 p.m., and will be ready and waiting to hear children’s Christ-mas lists. A craft area will be open again this year where children can make and take a craft project home with them. We will continue the tradition of “Warm Hands from Young Hearts,” asking that donations of gloves/mittens be placed on our tree to donate to those in need. Participants can bundle up for a carriage ride around town and get up close and personal with a real reindeer. Anyone who misses Santa on the 11th can see him when he is back in town from 5 to 7 p.m., Dec. 17 at the Boat Basin (this will be the only activity of the day).

More than 100 seventh- and eighth-grade girls discov-ered exciting career opportunities available to them in a fun and educational atmosphere at Bowling Green State University’s Women in Science, Math, Engineering and Technology program.
Sponsored by the Offi ce for Educational Outreach, the program was held on Nov. 19 at BGSU Firelands.
The conference featured hands-on learning while mo-tivating and inspiring girls to explore career options in traditionally male-dominated scientifi c and technological fi elds. Students learned why it is essential to take math and science courses now to prepare them for a career in science, math, engineering or technology.
Students participated in experiments, simulations and
creative problem solving. The girls also had the opportuni-ty to meet positive female role models who have a passion for science, math, engineering and technology.

Gina is defi nitely a fun athlete to watch. She is instant energy the second she hits the fl oor. What she lacks in offensive skills on the basketball court, she more than makes up for on the defensive end. Her quickness and aggressive defensive style can drive op-posing ball handlers crazy. Most impor-tantly, she always has an infectious smile that radiates and sends the message that wherever she is, that’s where you want to be. Congratulations go out to her, as well, for being selected as the SBC’s Most Out-standing Performer for women’s soccer in the fall of 2010.
Q: When did you start playing soccer? What do you like about the sport?
A: My sophomore year was the fi rst time that I ever played soccer. I love everything about soccer, especially defense.
Q: What position do you play on the team and what are your strengths at that spot?
A: I played defense until I was moved up to midfi eld at the end of this season. My strength is playing aggressively on defense.
Q: Now that the season is complete, what
will your lasting thoughts of the 2010 team be?
A: I became so close with my teammates, especially the seniors. I love them all and will truly miss playing with them. We all worked very hard and played well together. Because of this, I feel we had a successful season.
Q: What do you like about playing bas-ketball?
A: Once again, I love playing with the girls on the team and playing defense.
Q: Outside of sports, what other activities do you enjoy?
A: I enjoy hanging with my friends, shop-ping and going to the beach!!!
Q: What are your plans following the Hu-ron High School years? Will soccer be a part of it?
A: I am hoping to go to Ohio University or Dayton and pursue a career in medicine.
Q: Tell me something that you want to try/see/go to that you never have and why?
A: I’ve always wanted to skydive. Gina is pictured here with her mom and dad when she was on the home-coming court.
