There are six levels of the Diamond Clover Awards. The goal of the program is to encourage youth to continue to grow and accept new challenges as they gain more experience in the 4-H program. Each level requires a slightly higher level of participation. The expectations for each level give members a guide to assist them in planning their activities for
the year. Once they master the new level, they are recognized for their achievements by receiving a Diamond Clover pin. The final level, Diamond Clover 6, is the highest award a 4-H’er in Maryland can receive. It requires that the youth be active in their county 4-H program and also that they plan and conduct a significant community service project. For More Information: A summary of the requirement for each level is available on the State 4-H website at: http://extension.umd.edu/4-h/youth-families/awards-recognition Level 6 proposals are due each year by August 31 to be approved before starting your project. If you have any questions or need assistance, please call 301-724-3320.

What you need:
White bathroom tiles ( found at
hardware stores)
A sponge painting brush
Decoupage sealant (Mod Podge)
A heavy book of some sort for pressing
Lots of colorful leaves
Felt and craft glue for coaster bottoms
What to do: 1. The first step, and quite possibly the most fun one, is to send the troops
out to gather a variety of leaves. Encourage them to try and find ones that are very colorful, as well as some that are more unusual in shape for variety.
2. Pressing the Leaves—(Do not skip this step, it is very important that the leaves be pressed so they lie flat on your coaster surface.) Using an old book, place a few leaves in between the pages of your book, then skip a few pages and place some more and so on until all of your leaves are in the book. (If you’re concerned about the leaves leaving a mark, you may put some newspaper between the leaves and your book. Next place your book in a safe place and add something else on top of the book for added weight. Leave your book setting for about 7-10 days. Finally open your book and check the leaves. You’ll want to make sure they are nice and flat as well as dry.
3. Prepare your tile. Select a few leaves and arrange them on a clean tile so you can see how the leaves will be arranged.
4. Once the arrangement is set, remove the leaves and paint a thin layer of sealant over the clean tile.
5. While the tile is still wet from the first coat, add your first leaf, it should be the bottom layer in your arrangement, and place a think layer of sealant over that leaf.
6. Add the next leaf and a layer of sealant over that one, and so on, until all of the leaves are arranged onto your tile. Allow this layer to dry completely.
7. Once all of the tiles are completed and the layers of sealant are dried, add one final coat of sealant over your coaster and let dry. You’ll be able to tell that the tiles are dry by touch, but you’ll also notice that they are not milky looking anymore, but instead will have a nice clear shine to them.
8. One final step once the coasters are dry is to add some felt to the bottoms so they don’t scratch your tables. You can either purchase small sticky backed felt circles, or cut a square of felt and simply glue it to the bottoms.
