Introduction

What is Focus Night?

The basics of Focus NightDSE Focus Night (Fokusaften) is held anu-ally at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). Focus Night comprises several eve-nings, each with their own theme, and a few visiting companies.

This year’s themes are:

• Management & Consulting• Oil & Gas • Electrical Engineering & Energy• Civil Engineering• Software Technology• Biotechnology• Process & Mechanical Engineering

At the evening of each Focus Night a num-ber of companies within a specific industry, will give two back-to-back presentations lasting for an hour each. In this way stu-dents have the opportunity to listen to pres-entations from two different companies.

After the presentations there will be a light buffet which is free for all students who have signed up for Focus Night.During the buffet there will be plenty of time to meet engineers from the visiting companies in an informal setting.

Relevant for everyoneNo matter how far you are in your studies, Focus Night is well worth your while.

For people who have just commenced their studies toward becoming an engineer this is a great opportunity to learn what it actually means to be an engineer, from people who work for the biggest engineering companies both nationally and internationally.

Students who have big projects coming up should definitely consider probing company representatives to find out if the company would consider taking part in the project.

If you are about to finish your degree, or have already graduated, this is the perfect opportunity to network your way into a great position in a prominent engineering company.

Companies are looking for youThe companies at Focus Night spend huge amounts of resources looking for the best engineers to fill their positions. It is im-portant to remember that they want to be there just as much as you do, if not more. So come prepared, and you could strike gold, no matter what you are looking for.

A CV and a grade sheet give a quick over-viev of your capabilities and experiences along with your academic performance. If you haven’t made a CV yet this is the perfectopportunity,andyoucanfindample advice on how to do it in the Pejling 2012/2013 catalog which can be found in the catalog stands around campus.

Get to know the companies that you are interested in

Thefirstimpressionisalwayscrucial.Don’t make a bad one by knowing way too little about a representing company. If you make yourself memorable by asking good questions the presentative will give better answers, providing a solid foundation for further communication. Start by reading about the companies in this catalog.

Bring your project and thesis ideas

If you have an idea for a project that would be perfect to do with one of the compa-nies, bring a short description and get an opinion from a representative.

As long as you are interested

Nothing should stop you from attending Focus Night. After all, the worst that can happen is that you get some great insight into the companies.

At Focus Night all students are looking for the same thing. To get the companies’ atten-tion it is important to prepare as much as possible prior to the event.

Each company offers different opportuni-ties to students and graduates. To keep track of it all we have compiled a list of categories, which each company has filled in, thereby making it clear what kind of work they would like you to do for them. The categories are:

Depending on your situation you will be interested in companies who have checked certain of these categories on their com-pany page.

Introduction

Focus Night is arranged by DSE (De Studerendes Erhverskontakt), which is an entirely voluntary student organisation with around 100 members, divided betweentwodivisionswithoffic-es in Lyngby and Aalborg. Most of the members are engineering students.

As an organisation DSE offers youbothbenefitsandchallengesduring your time as a student. As a member you can meet rep-resentatives from leading engi-neering companies, which will help you establish a professional network.

As a member of DSE, you have an abundance of opportunities to experience planning and man-agement of major events hands on. With 130–150 participating companies and organisations, the DSE fair is the largest career fair in Denmark. Completely or-ganised and conducted by just under 50 members.

The backbone of Denmark’s infra-structure

The Danish Road Directorate is re-sponsible for the State road network, which consists of motorways, a number of main roads, and numer-ous bridges. The State road network in total constitutes approximately 4,000 km of roads and more than 2,260 structures – within these are 42 large bridges and four tunnels. This corresponds to 5% of Den-mark’s total public road network of almost 75,000 km. Almost half of alltrafficinDenmarkusestheStateroad network, every day, all year round.

The Road Directorate's work consists primarily of planning and project design, construction of roads and bridges, and operation and maintenance.

We serve road users

At the Road Directorate our mission is to ensure that road users reach their destinations safely and easily. This requires prudent planning of Denmark’s infrastructure and road construction. The road system should match the needs of society and other modes of transport – and also ensure the sound operation of the road network. Right down to the last detail, the road network must be so well-designed and well-construct-ed that road users can rely on roads that are safe and easy to use.

To ensure a cohesive and well-designed infrastructure, the Danish Road Directorate cooperates with a large number of authorities, and especially with the rest of the Danish road sector and the municipalities.
