1. THE UNIVERSITY

The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) established by an Act of Parliament in 1985,has contributed significantly towards the promotion of higher education through Open Distance Learning(ODL). Through its distinctive features such as democratization of education, flexibility, applicationof ICT and unique teaching learning pedagogy, the University has continuously striven to build aknowledge society through inclusive education. IGNOU in a relatively short time has made a significant contribution to the areas of higher education,community education, extension activities and continual professional development. 2. SCHOOL OF AGRICULTURE

The School of Agriculture (SOA), established in January 2005 at IGNOU, strives to addressthe need for education and knowledge management in agriculture for safe and sustainableresource utilization and nutritional food production. Through various skill based programmes, theSchool has been focusing on academic and extension activities in agriculture.

3. ABOUT POPULATION FOUNDATION OF INDIA

The Population Foundation of India (PFI) is a national-level NGO at the forefront of policy advocacyand research on population, health and development issues in the country. Established in 1970 bya group of socially committed industrialists led by the late Mr JRD Tata and Dr Bharat Ram, PFIworks to improve quality of life through increased access to quality family planning and reproductivehealth services, advocacy programs and capacity building at the national, state and district levels.

4. ABOUT THE COURSE

As is common knowledge, the population of the world has crossed the 7 billion mark of whichIndia’s population is more than 1 billion, the second highest for any country after China. However,the discussion on population must be understood in a more holistic manner rather than be limitedto only numbers and statistics. At its heart, population is a human issue where we are talk aboutwomen and men, their reproductive choices and health, their quality of life and well-being.

Instead of a top-down approach of looking at population growth in an alarmist way, we need toadopt a rights based approach, where the dignity of human life is upheld. The State and the societyat large must ensure that essential services – like health, education and opportunities for livelihoods,and a healthy environment – exist for one and all so that there is a permissive environment forpeople to make informed choices, reproductive and even otherwise.

Keeping these fundamentals in mind, the Appreciation Course on Population and SustainableDevelopment aims to explore the linkages between ‘population’ and ‘sustainable development’ inIndia, looking into the intersection of population issues with areas such as health, education,opportunities for livelihoods, environmental safety and sustainable development.

The course goes on to tease-out new concepts, emerging issues, public discourse and debates and theinter-linkages vis-a-vis ‘population and sustainable development in India’.

4.1 Course Objectives

To introduce the contemporary issues in the field of population studies concerning the interrelation-ships between population and social and economic development.

To explore and gain insights into the appropriate strategic planning for population stabilization.

To understand other related thematic areas including environment, gender, reproductive health andother health issues, ageing and population displacement within broader perspectives of populationand development.

To provide an understanding of theory based knowledge as well as field experiences on the severaldimensions pertaining to population and sustainable development in India.

4.2 Credits

At IGNOU, we define credit as “ a notional representation of a fixed amount of students’ study hoursdevoted to various aspects of study: studying the text with comprehension, working on assignments,going through other course related documents, listening to the audio programmes, viewing the videoprogrammes, attending the academic counselling, etc.” One credit is equal to 30 study hours. TheAppreciation Course on Population and Sustainable Development is a 4 credit course. Thus, forcompleting this course a student has to put in 120 hours of study.

4.3 Admission Procedure

IGNOU announces walk-in registration throughout the year for admission to January and July academicsessions. The university offers online admission procedure by which the prospective learners are ableto submit their application forms online. The form for admission can also be obtained from the RegionalCentres of the University or it can be downloaded from the University Website. The filled-in applicationform with the requisite enclosures is to be submitted at the Regional Centre as per the specified date.Student Registration is done at all the Regional Centres for Indian students and through sponsoringinstitutions in case of students from abroad. The course will run in two cycles in a year.

4.4 Entry requirement

Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in any discipline from a recognized University areeligible to apply.

4.5 Language of Instruction

The medium of instruction will be English.

4.6 Duration and Mode of Learning

The duration of the course is minimum three months and maximum one year. It will be available in openand distance learning mode.

4.7 Course Fee

A nominal fee of Rupees 800 will be payable by the candidate.

5.2 Project work

The course has the component of field work /project to give practical training to the learners. You arerequired to undertake a project on any subject concerned with the issue of population and sustainabledevelopment. The synopsis of the project will be submitted to the Programme Coordinator. Once thesynopsis is approved, the project should be carried out under the guidance of project supervisor.

In addition, some suggested topics for Project Work are given in Block 4 of the course. After collectingdata or facts, the findings and conclusions must be presented in the form of project Report. The ProjectReport must be of around 500-1000 words, either handwritten or typed in double space and shouldbe submitted to the Programme Coordinator.

6. COUNSELLING AND ASSIGNMENT REALTED INFORMATION

Counselling

There will be 4 counselling sessions of 2 hour each. The counselling shall be done at the study centresand the monitoring shall be done by the Regional Centres. You should contact your study centre forthe schedule of such counselling sessions. The counselling sessions are not compulsory. However, weadvise you to attend them as far as possible, because they would be very useful in certain aspects toshare your views on the subject with your academic counsellors and fellow learners; comprehend someof the complex ideas/concepts or difficult issues discussed in your materials, and get clarifications forany of your doubts which you would not have solved yourself.

Assignments

Assignment is an important component of your study. Each block of ACPSD has one compulsoryassignment. The assignments carry 60 % weight in the final results. It means you have to submit one

assignment per block to complete the course. The assignments have to be submitted to the Programmecoordinator as per the date mentioned in the assignment. Date for submission of assignments for theJanuary and July sessions will be informed along with the assignments.

Guidelines for writing assignment

Write your enrolment number, name and full address at the top right side corner of the first page ofyour assignment response(s).

Write the course title, assignment number and the date of submission in capital letters in the centre atthe top of the first page of your response(s).

Your answer should be pin pointed and well documented. Do not copy from the study materials.Answers should be hand written. Leave at least 1.½ inches margin on the left and at least 4 lines inbetween each other.

You must keep a copy of your assignments. If these are lost in postal transit you may re-submit thecopy only after taking permission from the authority.

7. EVALUATION

The evaluation system of the programme is based on two components:

a) Continuous evaluation in the form of assignments (weightage: 60%) The assignments are to besubmitted to The Programme Coordinator. There will be one assignments each for Block 1—3.Each assignment carries 50 marks. It is compulsory for the students to submit all the prescribedassignments.

b) Project Work (weightage: 40%). Project Evaluation will be done at the Headquarters. The ProjectReport Evaluation Criteria is as follows :

· Task Definition and Approach (25% weightage) which includes precise statement of objectivesand Specification of methodology/ process and justification of the selection of the topic.

· Literature Review, Findings and Evaluation (50% weightage)

· Communication of Ideas and Writing style (25% weightage)

Grading

Based on these general criteria of evaluation of the project work, the project will be given a specificgrade, which may be interpreted as follow:

D Satisfactory (one has to rewrite the project)

E Unsatisfactory for these grades.

The minimum standards for completion of the course are the following:

a) Minimum ‘D’ Grade in Continuous Evaluation i.e. assignments in each block

b) Minimum ‘C’ Grade in t he Project Work.

c) Final Grade (Assignment + Project Work) should be at least C

8. CERTIFICATE

The certificate will be signed by the Director of the School and shall be issued by the School.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR DOINGASSIGNMENTS

1. Read Instructions for submission of assignments given in your Programme Guide carefully.

2. Assignments should be demanded only if your registration for that course (subject) is valid.

3. Please ensure that you have mentioned your correct Enrolment No. (it consists of 9 digits),Name, Course Code and Course Title, Semester/year, wherever applicable, and Study, CentreCode on your assignment responses before submitting to the concerned authorities.

4. Submission of assignments withing due dates is a pre-requisite for appearing in the term-endexamination. You are, therefore, advised to submit your TMAs at your Study Centre within theprescribed dates. Assignments received after due dates will be summarily rejected.

5. In case you have failed to get the overall qualifying grade for a course; you may choose to eitherappear in the term-end examination or attempt the assignments for that course again.

6. Assignments should not be demanded to improve your score if you have secured minimumqualifying score in a course (subject).

7. Please do not submit your assignment responses twice either at the same Study Centre or atdifferent Study Centres for evaluation.
