FMU 2014 Men’s Soccer Pre-Season OutlookThe Francis Marion University men’s soccer team will open its third season under head coach John Campbell when the

Patriots travel to Salisbury, N.C., on Thursday (Sept. 4) to face Newberry College at 5 p.m. in the opening match of theCatawba College Tournament. Also on Thursday, Catawba will face Lees-McRae College at 7:30 p.m. at the newly reno-vated Frock Soccer Complex. To conclude its weekend play, FMU will face the host Indians on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.Francis Marion leads the all-time series with Newberry 12-1, including a 3-2 overtime victory in Florence last season. ThePatriots also lead the series against Catawba by an 8-6-1 count.

Campbell welcomes back eight lettermen, including six starters, from last season’s 10-5-4 squad that finished tied forfourth during the Peach Belt Conference regular season and upset the nation’s top-ranked team in the PBC Tournamentsemifinals en route to making an appearance in the conference title match.

“The biggest carry over from season’s success has been the winning attitude and culture that we have developed,”Campbell said. “The returnees have done a good job of communicating that to our newcomers.“We lost a good group of seniors (from 2013) that were vital in play on the field and in the area of leadership. Therefore, weare now young again – but we are probably better technically and can possess the ball better. I feel as though we have theability to create opportunities, but the key will be our finishing. Speed of play will also be one of our keys in 2014 – can weget the ball moving quickly, can we back the other team’s defense up, and then possess the ball on their end of the field.”

The Patriots were picked to finish fifth in the annual Peach Belt coaches’ pre-season poll, while junior midfielder PascalMagiera was named to the pre-season All-Conference squad. Magiera, who recorded three assists in 2013 and played allbut 28 minutes of the team’s 19 matches, was last season’s team most valuable player and a 2013 All-PBC selection.

Also back are junior midfielder Sven Ricke (2 goals, 7 assists), a 2013 All-PBC pick; sophomore midfielder ShahinHemat (4 goals, 2 assists); junior midfielder Michael Eibl; graduate student forward Benjamin Kwast (3 goals, 1 assist);junior defender David Sheridan; and graduate student defender Tom Gillette. Ricke ranked 40th nationally in assists pergame (0.44) last season and 46th in total assists despite missing several matches with an injury.

Campbell’s recruiting class consists of 12 newcomers: nine freshmen, two transfers, and one redshirt. “We are muchdeeper this season. Almost every position has guys battling for starting spots and that competition is good. The level ofplay has gone up everywhere and should in turn make the team better.” The newcomers include defenders PeterBeniseau (Bordeaux, France), Jeremy Bonyaa (Ris Orangis, France), Thomas Kues (Hannover, Germany), Gino Lucarelli(Goose Creek, SC), and Jayden Doyle (Toronto, Canada); midfielders Andrew Kephart (Charleston, SC), Julius Broman(Stockholm, Sweden), Harrison Smith (Hartlepool, England), and Ryan Kolenda (Mississauga, Canada); and forward MaxJenks-Gilbert (Colwyn Bay, United Kingdom).

“Beniseau is a really good technical player, is strong in the air, possesses poise on the ball, and is comfortable with itat his feet. I am looking for him to shore up the defense whether its in the back or as a holding midfielder. Bonyaa is a bigtall lanky kid who will play center back. He is also good in the air, and has good pace for his size. Kues is a center de-fender with a very technical game. He’s the guy we’re going to look at to play through out of the back. He sees the gamewell, is a good passer, and is very calm on the ball – situationally aware. I will look for him to lead the way when we winpossession from the back. Doyle is a left-footed, left defender who will fight with returners for a starting spot. He is verytechnical, a good passer, and sees the field really well. Broman is a speedy player who excels going 1v1. He has a solidnose for the goal, so we’ll be looking for him to score goals whether it’s coming from the midfield or out wide attacking as aforward. Smith is a strong holding center midfielder. Another very technical player, he sees the field well and flat out winsballs. He also possesses a great motor and is very competitive. He is a player I am looking at to make an immediateimpact. Kolenda is a holding center mid with a great motor, a super attitude, and the ability to win balls. He is a fiercecompetitor. Jenks-Gilbert is a speedy striker. I am looking for him to help lead the attack, both scoring goals and creatingopportunities. He has a good pace to his game, is very technical, and has a good nose for finishing around the goal.”

The goalkeeper position will be a battle between sophomore MikeWarn and freshmen Daniel Gosciniak (Toronto, Canada) and Julian Glos(Monchstockheim, Germany). Warn appeared in only one match lastseason, but in that match he shutout Clayton State University on theroad 2-0 and for that effort earned Peach Belt Goalkeeper of the Weekhonors.

Last season, FMU ranked 40th out of 188 NCAA Division II teams insave percentage with a 0.794 clip. The Patriots also ranked highly intwo other goalkeeping categories, 46th in shutout percentage (0.37) and56th in goals against average (1.10). In Campbell’s previous twoseasons, the Patriots’ goals allowed total has dropped from 42 in 2011to 32 in 2012 and to 22 in 2013.

FMU’s 16-match schedule for 2014 includes eight home matches.FMU was 6-1-0 at home last season on Hartzler Field. The Patriots areentering their 39th season, and the third on the lighted Hartzler Field.
