Officers & Senior Management

Tom Schmutz, CEOThomas R. Schmutz became the Chief Executive Officer in October, 2015. Prior to FLYHT, Tom served as Vice President, Engineering at L-3 Communications, Aviation Recorders Division, in Sarasota FL, a position he held beginning in August, 2006.  Tom also served as Vice President, Engineering for the Aviation Products Sector within the Products/Electronic Systems Group. Prior to L-3, Tom served as Vice President of Engineering for AirNet Communications, a telecommunications firm he helped to form in 1994 and take public in 1999. Prior to AirNet, he worked for Harris Corporation and was a Captain in the United States Army Corps of Engineers. Mr. Schmutz holds an MBA from the University of South Florida, an MS from the Georgia Institute of Technology (GA Tech) where he studied Digital Signal Processing and Communication Theory and a BS degree from the United States Military Academy (West Point) where he studied Electrical Engineering. He holds nineteen U.S. design patents and has other patents pending.

Nola Heale, CA, Chief Financial OfficerMs. Heale has 30 years financial management and reporting experience on three continents in diverse industries, including manufacturing, services and transportation logistics industries. She has held positions as chief financial officer, board director, financial and general operations management in public and private companies. Nola is a Canadian and a South African Chartered Accountant, an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (United Kingdom) and a Chartered Global Management Accountant; she is a graduate of the Advanced Program of Canadian Board Diversity Council and was appointed to the 2014 Diversity 50.

Officers & Senior Management cont’dJeff Brunner, P.Eng., Vice President, Certification Engineering & China OperationsMr. Brunner is a professional engineer with over 18 years of experience in the aviation industry. After receiving avionics engineering and aircraft maintenance training from Southern Alberta Institute of Technology, Mr. Brunner worked in aircraft maintenance before completing a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Calgary. He joined FLYHT in 2005, initially serving as head of the Company’s engineering department, where he led the initiative to have FLYHT certified by Transport Canada as a Design Approval Organization (DAO). Mr. Brunner is also a Transport Canada delegate under FLYHT’s DAO.

Kent Jacobs, Technical FellowMr. Jacobs is a professional pilot with a computer science degree who was the first employee of FLYHT. He is the founding developer of the AFIRSTM system. What started out as a box that fit in a coat closet, the AFIRS system is now the size of a loaf of bread, is installed on aircraft and is the center of FLYHT’s business. Kent is also the lead developer of the Fuel and FLYHTStreamTM systems.

David Perez, Vice President, Sales and MarketingMr. Perez joins us after a distinguished career as Director or Transportation and Travel at HP, and a background of working at airlines and aviation software company SABRE. Dave was a senior business analyst for airline operations and has been doing business development for over 20 years.

Michael Fang, Vice President, China OperationsMr. Fang is an Avionics Engineer with more than 15 years of work experience in the Chinese aerospace industry. He has worked with both the Chinese Airlines and Chinese government regulators. He holds an MBA from the Haskayne School of Business at the University of Calgary.

Matieu Plamondon, Director OperationsMatieu Plamondon was appointed Director Operations in July 2015. He has over 15 years experience managing airline operational teams. He has also acquired experience in the IT and software industry while leading the operations team of a software provider supporting over 200 airlines worldwide. In his previous position as the Director Operational Control Centre at First Air he was responsible for the implementation of satellite communication and tracking within the centre.

Board of DirectorsBill Tempany, ChairmanMr. Tempany has more than 35 years of senior management experience in hi-tech companies and more than 15 years experience in the public markets. He was CEO of FLYHT from March 2003 to October 2015. He was founder, President and CEO of Fintech Services Ltd. (now Sylogist Ltd. SYZ on TSXV), President and founder of QByte Services Ltd., and a consultant in the international oil and gas industry to companies such as Ziff Energy Group and Petrobas.

John BelcherAudit CommitteeMr. Belcher is a leading authority in aviation and air transport. Mr. Belcher was formerly Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of ARINC Incorporated. His prior experience includes positions such as President and CEO of Hughes Aircraft of Canada, Ltd., Vice President, Hughes Aircraft Company, President and CEO, Thompson-Hicking Aviation, Senior Vice President, SPAR/PRIOR Data Sciences, Executive Director, Transport Canada, and Director General, Supply and Services Canada. John presently serves on seven other board including LandMark Aviation, Signalhorn, NanoVapor, Anne Arundel Health System, World Trade Institute, Governor’s Work Force Investment Board, and Cyber Reliant. He joined FLYHT’s board of directors in August 2014.

Mike BrownGovernance and Compensation Committee ChairmanMr. Brown is a lawyer with the firm Geselbracht Brown and practices in the areas of Business, Real Estate, Civil and Wills & Estates. Mr. Brown is past Chair of the Board of Governors of Vancouver Island University (VIU) and was a strong leader in the logistical and legal challenges of the transition of VIU from a university college to full university status. During the process, he was instrumental in the creation and implementation of a governance process for the new VIU and received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal after being recommended by the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC) for his service to higher education in Canada. Within his community he has also been actively involved with the United Way, the Nanaimo Dragon Board Festival Society, CrimeStoppers, the Nanaimo Rotary Club and the Nanaimo Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Brown is a graduate of the Faculty of Law at the University of Ottawa. He has served on the FLYHT board of directors since March 2003.

He joined Airbus from Honeywell where he served as Vice President for the $1.4B Propulsion Systems Enterprise. Prior to that, he held increasingly senior positions with Rolls-Royce for 29 years, culminating as President and CEO of Rolls-Royce Canada and President and CEO of International Aero Engines, which Rolls-Royce was a major shareholder. He is Chairman-elect of the British American Association in Washington, DC, a member of the Board of Governors of CCAM in Virginia, on the board of the National Aeronautical Association (NAA). He is past President of The Wings Club in New York, a past member of the boards of the Flight Safety Foundation, the Aero Club of Washington, DC and the NBAA’s Associate Member Advisor Council. He joined the FLYHT board of directors in August 2014.

Jacques KavafianAudit CommitteeMr. Kavafian is an independent business man based in Richmond Hill, Ontario. He is well known to the investment, aviation and travel communities with more than 26 years of experience as an analyst on Bay Street, covering companies in the airline, aerospace and leisure industries. He was Vice-President and Analyst with Research Capital from August 2004 to October 2009. Mr. Kavafian joined the FLYHT board of directors in December 2010.

Doug Marlin Audit, and Governance and Compensation CommitteesMr. Marlin has been President of Marline Ventures Inc., a Canadian-based consulting firm, since January 1997. He is past Director of Zed.i Solutions Inc. and JDA Software Group Inc. Mr. Marlin was previously President of JDA Software Ltd. from 1981 to 1996. He has served on the FLYHT board of directors since March 2003.

Jack OlcottGovernance and Compensation CommitteeMr. Olcott was educated as an aeronautical engineer (BSE & MSE, Princeton University, MBA, Rutgers University) and has a certificate in leadership training from the Kennedy School of Government of Harvard University. Mr. Olcott began his career in business aviation and was involved with creating a flight research laboratory at the Indian Institute of Technology/Kanpur. He also obtained and managed flight mechanic contracts issued by NASA and private industry. In the early 1970’s Mr. Olcott began a career in aviation journalism where he was Editor and Publisher of Business & Commercial Aviation magazine and a Vice President of McGraw-Hill’s Aviation Week Group. Mr. Olcott joined the National Business Aviation Association as President in 1992 and held that position until 2003. He is currently President of General Aviation Company. He joined the board of directors of FLYHT in May 2008.

Mark RosenkerGovernance and Compensation CommitteeMr. Mark Rosenker has many years of experience in the aviation industry including a past tenure as Chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board (“NTSB”). He is currently a consultant to CBS News and appears on their network to discuss transportation safety issues. Mr. Rosenker was the 11th Chairman of the NTSB from 2006 to 2009. He served President George W. Bush as Deputy Assistant to the President and Director of the White House Military Office from 2001 until the President nominated and appointed him to the NTSB. A retired Major General in the US Air Force Reserve, Mr. Rosenker entered active duty in June 1969 as Second Lieutenant from the University of Maryland ROTC program and completed more than 36 years of active and reserve service before retiring in December of 2006. During his career, General Rosenker received numerous awards and decorations including two Air Force Distinguished Medals and the Legion of Merit. General Rosenker is a graduate of the Air Command and Staff College and the Air War College. Mr. Rosenker is a member of several corporate boards, as well as a member of the Aerospace Industries Association’s Board of Governors. He is currently President of the Transportation Safety Group LLC, a specialized consulting company. He joined the FLYHT board of directors in June 2015.

Paul TakaloAudit Committee ChairmanMr. Takalo is a Chartered Accountant who was employed with Grant Thornton from 1985 to 2005 and spent the last five years of his time there as Audit Partner. From November 2006 to January 2015 Mr. Takalo held the position of Vice President, Finance and Chief Financial Officer with Standen’s Limited and a successor Limited Partnership. Mr. Takalo has been on the FLYTH board of directors since May 2008.
