OUR CAPABILITIES®

Heatec makes, sells and services a broad line of heaters, liquid storage tanks and related products. Our products are used mostly at facilities of producers and manufacturers. Key users are hot-mix asphalt (HMA) plants, asphalt terminals, emulsion terminals and concrete producers. Other key users include oil and gas pro-ducers, chemical producers, food producers, roofing manufactur-ers, power plants, etc.

THERMAL FLUID HEATERS

Heatec specializes in thermal fluid heaters, espe-cially those with helical coils heated by fired burn-ers. They are extremely versatile and used in a wide variety of industries. They are also known as hot oil heaters. Oil and gas producers know them as HMO (Heat Medium Oil) heaters.

In any case the burner heats the thermal fluid that circulates through the heater coil and through heating coils in other equipment. A single heater can heat one or more thermal fluid circuits with multiple pieces of equipment. Temperatures at the equipment can be controlled independently.

PROCESS HEATERS

Our process heaters are designed to heat a spe-cific type of fluid as it flows through the heater. The type of fluid may vary and may be liquid or gas. Process heaters heat fluids directly whereas thermal fluid heaters heat thermal fluid, which in turn heats other equipment indirectly.

We offer a wide variety of process heaters used by a wide variety of producers and manufacturers. Some process heaters are better known by other names: booster heaters, gas regen heaters, reboil-ers, water bath heaters, vaporizers, and convec-tion heaters.

PUMP SKIDS ®

Our pump skids are usually adjuncts to our heat-ers. They may also include an expansion tank. Most pump skids are separate from the heater.

Pump skids usually have two or more pumps. One is usually a back-up pump, needed if the system

cannot be shut down for maintenance.

Use of separate skids provides flexibility in plant layout. They eliminate the need to mount multiple pumps on the heater skid and allow the heater package to be smaller.

9

HEAT EXCHANGERS®

Our heat exchangers include economizers, booster heater exchangers and steam generators.

The economizers recover heat from exhaust gases of the heater. This heat would otherwise be lost into the atmosphere. Instead, it is used to pre-heat thermal fluid or to preheat combustion air for the heater’s burner. It reduces the amount of fuel required for the heating process.

Our booster heat exchangers boost the tempera-ture of asphalt cement as it flows through the unit. Heating is provided by hot oil from an external source such as a thermal fluid heater.

Our steam generators produce steam by heating water with hot thermal fluid from a thermal fluid heater. Steam generators replace fired boilers and minimize explosion hazards associated with them.

10

WATER HEATERS

We make water heaters for a wide variety of indus-trial uses. Most have gas fired burners.

Firestorm™ is the brand name of our most popular water heater. It is a direct contact water heater that heats water on demand and provides a con-stant supply of instant hot water. It has an ex-tremely high thermal efficiency.

Special versions of the Firestorm heater are avail-

able with NSF certification for food processors.

We also offer a helical coil heater for heating wa-ter. It is similar to a thermal fluid heater, except it heats water as it is pumped through its helical coil to an external storage tank or reservoir. The water does not normally recirculate through the heater.

We also offer a combination unit that is a storage tank with a burner and fire tube.

FUEL PREHEATERS®

We make a variety of fuel preheaters. They can be used at virtually any facility that has to preheat fuel before it can be burned.

They are widely used at HMA plants to heat fuel for drum mixers and aggregate dryers. They are used at asphalt terminals to preheat fuel for heat-ers that heat the storage tanks.

Preheaters can be skid mounted. Or can be mount-ed on a chassis with a portable fuel tank. Or can or embedded in a fuel tank.

Modulating controls precisely control fuel temper-ature within one or two degrees of set point.

As an option, the preheater can be built to ASME code.

13

CONTROLS®

We design and build the controls for our heaters, tanks, polymer systems and related products. Advanced controls for our automated systems are computerized and employ PLCs.

We use a variety of control panels, including those classified for hazardous locations in NFPA code. According to the code, Class I, Divisions 1 and 2

are locations where fire or explosion hazards may exist due to flammable gases or vapors.

We also provide motor control centers built by Astec for operation of asphalt terminals and emul-sion plants. The control center centralizes all electrical power for the terminal and for the motor controls.

14

TANKS

We make tanks for storage of the following types of liquids: virgin asphalt, polymer modified as-phalt, emulsified asphalt, additives, chemicals, fuel and water.

Tanks may be heated or unheated, insulated or uninsulated, portable or stationary, vertical or horizontal, double or single walled, etc.

Capacities range up to 35,000 gallons for factory assembled tanks.

Horizontal tanks may have one or more compart-ments. They may be built as combination units to include other components. They may include a hot oil heater, a fuel preheater, calibration tank, unloading pump, etc.

TERMINALS

Heatec is heavily involved in building new asphalt storage terminals and asphalt emulsion plants.

We do major mechanical design and electrical engineering work for these facilities in addition to building much of the equipment.

We design and build most of the equipment at our modern factory in Chattanooga, Tennessee. We also assist with on-site installation at the facili-ties. Terminal equipment may include:

• A tank-car and barge unloading system

• Asphalt storage tanks of all sizes

• A dual truck load-out rack for tanker trucks

• Fuel storage tanks for diesel and waste oil

• Hot-oil heaters and a steam generator

• A control center with motor-generator backup

• A complete polymer-blending system

POLYMER SYSTEMS

We were an early pioneer in producing systems to blend polymer with asphalt cement to make PMAC (Polymer Modified Asphalt Cement).

PMAC is used as a binder in HMA (Hot Mix As-phalt). HMA made with PMAC, instead of virgin asphalt cement, has a much longer service life.

PMAC is also used to make asphalt roofing shin-gles to increase their life.

The polymer most commonly used for HMA is SBS (Styene-Butadiene-Styrene), which must be ground in a mill during the blending process. Ground rubber is also used.

The blending process requires unusually high temperatures and constant agitation.

Our systems are available in both fixed and por-table configurations.

MANUFACTURING®

Our skilled workers and modern manufacturing facilities enable us to make products that exceed your expectations.

Many of our products require welding that meets ASME code. So the majority of our welders are certified code welders. Critical welds are tested and X-rayed to industry standards.

We make our own coils. This is a capability that

most heater manufacturers lack.

We have new blasting and painting booths with built-in man lifts that enable us to apply a finish to our products second to none.

Our products are fully assembled and checked at our factory, eliminating problems and extra work in the field. We have a test pit that enables us to test fire and do functional tests on most heaters.

PARTS & SERVICE®

Get parts and service for your Heatec products anytime, day or night. We maintain a stock of most components needed to get your heater back in operation and can ship overnight.

We offer maintenance contracts for service on your heater by Heatec technicians on a regular basis, once or twice a year. One important advantage is

safety. Our technicians make sure all limit devices are working properly. Fuel savings is another benefit resulting from maintenance that includes tuning the burner.

And we may have a technician that resides near you so that travel time and costs are minimized.

We can also provide training at your facility.
