Conventionally flued fires lose most of their heat up the chimney. Burley flueless gas fires aredesigned to operate without a flue or chimney. This means that all the gas is used to heatyour room – not the environment. Burley flueless gas fires boast 100% efficiency andtherefore significantly reduce your fuel bill.

The Latitude, featured on the front cover, is the latest, excitingaddition to the range. Its stunning sleek design makes it aperfect centrepiece for contemporary living areas.

The Latitude is extremely slim in design which means that itcan be fitted on a flat wall without being recessed. Choosebetween a plain fuelbed or a layer of white chips.

IntroductionBurley introduced fixedflueless gas fires to Britainin 1999. Although theconcept is relatively new inthis country, fixed fluelessgas fires have a longestablished history inJapan (where there are 40million), the United States(approximately 20 million)and Australia.

Fixed flueless gas firesgive a combination ofconvenience, efficiencyand safety which fluedfires can never equal. Wehave entered an era ofspiralling gas prices, gasshortages and globalwarming. It is shortsighted to continuewasting energy at such arate when there is analternative product whichis superior to flued fires inso many ways.

EfficiencyMost of the heat from an open fluedgas fire or solid fuel fire goesstraight up the chimney. Bycomparison 100% of the heatgenerated by a flueless gas fire goesto heating the room.

Tests commissioned by Burleycompared a 2.5kW flueless gas fire(Burley Environ), a typical 6kW insetflued gas fire (quoted efficiency59%), a decorative flued gas fireand a 2kW electric fire.

These tests, in the living room of adetached house, showed that theflueless gas fire produced over 3times more heat per kilowatt thanthe flued gas fire and over 12 timesmore heat than the decorative gasfire. In other words the flued gas firelost over 70% of the heat up thechimney and the decorative fire lostover 90%.

If the 15 million flued gas fires inBritain were replaced by fluelessfires, the country would save around23,500,000,000 kilowatts of gasevery year (costing £1,600,000,000)which in turn would reduce carbondioxide emissions by over4,200,000 tonnes every year.

SafetyAs Burley’s flueless gas fires do not rely on a chimney, they provide an unsurpassed level of safety to which fluedfires can only aspire. Flues and chimneys can becomeblocked or adversely affected by down-draughts. Burleyflueless gas fires are designed to burn the gas extremelycleanly without a flue. The burnt gases are then passedthrough a catalytic converter.

Every Burley flueless gas fire has an oxygen depletionsensor which constantly monitors the air quality in theroom. If the level of oxygen drops by just 1.5%, the fireautomatically shuts down.

To prevent rubbish being thrown onto the fire and toensure absolute clean burning, Burley fit a ceramic glassfront to every fire.

Burley’s production method is unique. Every flueless gasfire we have ever made has been bench run for 30minutes, during which time we monitor numerouscombustion and safety criteria. Burley’s rigid test criteriafor combustion are four times stricter than the Europeanstandards.

fixed flueless gas fires – how do they work?

Page 9: flueless gas fires & stoves · fires, the country would save around 23,500,000,000 kilowatts of gas every year (costing £1,600,000,000) which in turn would reduce carbon dioxide

Movement of airthrough a housewith a flueless fire

Movement of airthrough a housewith a chimney

Air movementFlueless fires gently dissipate heat throughoutthe entire house. A small air vent regulates airinto the room which is being heated. Thisheated air dissipates away from the fire andcirculates around the house.

A chimney or flued fire, by comparison, drawsa huge amount of air from around your house. This is warm air (that you have paid to heat)which is replaced by cold air leaking in throughwindows and doors.

Catalytic convertersAll Burley flueless gas fires incorporate acatalytic converter.

This is a honeycomb which is coated with raremetals. Oxygen ‘sticks’ to the coating. If acarbon monoxide molecule meets it, theoxygen converts the carbon monoxide tocarbon dioxide (which is harmless and ispresent in fresh air). Burley has NEVER had acatalytic converter fail or need replacing.

All Burley appliances are CE marked byinternational test houses. One of the tests thatthe fires must pass is to have the catalyticconverter removed. In this condition it must stillpass all the strict combustion tests.

ConvenienceA flueless gas fire can be fitted inminutes rather than several hours. Itis an extremely simple and problemfree operation provided the Gas Saferegistered fitter follows the installationinstructions. If it is to go in an openchimney, then the flue must beblocked. Apart from that the fire justneeds connecting and testing, andthe air vent fitting. When fitting aflueless fire, it does not need to besealed to the fireplace opening.

Flueless gas fires do not have to beinstalled on an outside wall. As noflue is required, thousands of poundscan be saved by not building a newchimney or restoring a condemnedone.

Annual servicing for a flueless firesimply consists of cleaning the fire, checking the combustion, andchecking for damaged components.

No problems with chimneysChimneys and flues are fraught withpotential problems, all of which willstop a flued fire from operating safely.

1. The fabric of the chimney couldcollapse.

2. A nest or debris could block theflue.

3. Atmospheric conditions or opendoors can create a down draught.

4. Extractor fans can create a draughtto reverse the pull of a chimney, causing it to spill the products ofcombustion into the room (this makesflueless gas fires particularly popularand safe for use in pubs andrestaurants).

Burley's flueless gas fires suffer fromnone of these problems.

Gas Safe Registered FitterThe fire must be installed and serviced annually by a GasSafe Register (formerly Corgi) fitter in accordance with theinstallation instructions.

Full instructions are supplied with the fire and on ourwebsite. Please read installation instructions beforeundertaking any structural preparation work. For moreinformation and installation guide, visitwww.burley.co.uk/technical_information.php

VentilationAs per Building Regulations Part J, an air vent whichprovides not less than 100cm2 free air must be installed inthe room, at least 1 metre away from the fire. A chimney, ceiling or floor vent is not suitable.

Central heatingFlueless fires are not designed to be the sole source of heatin a room. They are supplementary to central heating.

Existing chimney or flueExisting chimneys and flues must be blocked off completely.A cavity wall box is supplied with the Perception, Environand Image. We recommend that this is used in all cases.

Fireplace requirementsThe fireplace and all materials within 200mm of the appliancemust be non-combustible. All materials, including the fireplaceand wall above (including any varnishes, paints etc) must berated to withstand a constant working temperature of 150ºC.You cannot put televisions etc on the wall above the fire.

Gas fires may not be fitted in basements which do not have atleast one side open to the outdoors, or in bathrooms. Burley does not recommend flued or flueless gas fires inbedrooms. If in doubt, please call Burley service department formore advice.

Natural gas or PropanePlease specify natural gas or propane when placing your orderas the fires are single category appliances. Due to the propertiesof propane the flame picture may differ slightly. (Note: Propaneoption is not available for the Latitude.)

GuaranteeAll products come with a one-year guarantee. Return of the guarantee card and service during the first year of ownership will provide you with a free second-year guarantee (conditions apply).
