Traditional RTUs lack the processing speed and capacity to handle control jobs requiring extremely fast response, like those performed by PLCs.
The ROC809 closes this performance gap by using the Motorola® PowerPC® (MPC862) 32-bit microprocessor as its engine.
Not only is the MPC862 fast, but it is designed for telecommunications and networking giving it a real edge over most PLCs.

The high power consumption of PLCs often limits their use to factory applications. Low power consumption for remote operation was a key design goal of the ROC809.
In addition to using low-power components, extensive use was made of the "sleep" modes provided by the CPU.
Sleep modes shut down operations when they are not needed, such as certain software tasks, and they control power to devices such as LEDs.

I/O Problems SolvedI/O Problems Solved
Interfacing to end devices can be the weakest link in a measurement and control system. Problems related to grounding, wiring errors, electrical noise, and transients are commonplace.
The ROC809 solves many of these problems because we’ve designed its I/O and communications modules with accuracy, ruggedness and survivability in mind.

Plug-in I/O modules make extensive use of optical (electrical) isolation, transient suppression, and current limiting. This dramatically improves reliability and virtually eliminates failures related to power, grounding and wiring errors.
All I/O modules are isolated from the backplane to minimize cross-card failures. The benefits of this extensive protection are less downtime, fewer trips to the field for repairs, and reduced spares inventory to name a few.

I/O Problems SolvedI/O Problems Solved
To facilitate expansion or repair, I/O modules can be removed and replaced under power. To simplify configuration, they are self-identifying to the firmware.
An outstanding feature of the analog input modules is their high accuracy. For example, the 12-bit module uses a 16-bit analog-to-digital (A/D) converter for greater accuracy than most competitive units.

I/O Problems SolvedI/O Problems Solved
Up to nine I/O modules can be plugged into the module slots in any order and combination of module types.
The low point count density of these modules lets you better match I/O to your application requirements.
You buy more of what you need, and less of what you don’t need.
Should a module fail, the impact on your application is minimized.

With the Ethernet capability of the ROC809, you can effectively extend your company’s local area network (LAN) to the field. You get more data at a lower cost than with conventional communications methods.
When coupled with our DS800 Development Suite, Ethernet makes it possible to network ROC809s, giving you tremendous I/O and control capabilities for large applications.

In addition to an Ethernet port, the ROC809 has two built-in EIA-232 (RS-232) ports, one typically used for communications to a PC-based local operator interface, and one for communication to other devices.
Three additional ports can be added using plug-in Communication Modules.

An outstanding feature of the ROC809 is its Spontaneous Report-by-Exception (SRBX) Data Transmission capability.
A host computer can poll the ROC809 at a user-specified time interval, or the unit can initiate a transmission when certain alarm conditions occur.
SRBX can greatly reduce communication system loading and related costs.

Application Problems SolvedApplication Problems Solved
The problem with many RTUs, PLCs and flow computers is their inability to meet a wide range of applications common to field installations.
The ROC809 addresses this problem with a comprehensive applications package that supports a wide range of metering and control needs.
The package builds upon the outstanding features proven in tens of thousands of ROC300 series installations worldwide.

Application Problems SolvedApplication Problems Solved The power of the
ROC809 is demonstrated by the number of processes that it can handle simultaneously with a small amount of I/O.
For example, 12 Meter Runs and 16 Control Loops can be managed by the ROC809 using only two multi-variable sensor ports and 16 analog outputs.

The ROC809s gas calculations comply with AGA and API standards and incorporate;– AGA 3 for orifice metering
– AGA 7/ ISO 9951 for turbine metering
– AGA 8 / ISO 12213-2 for compressibility
– API Chapter 21 Section 1.
Setting up meter runs is fast and easy with our fill-in-the-blanks configuration method. There’s no learning curve, and minimal knowledge of AGA calculations is needed.

A new feature introduced by the ROC809 is the Meter Station, which makes it easy to configure and operate multiple meter runs with similar properties.
Meter Stations also reduce communications overhead and reduce data entry when configuring multiple meter runs.
The ROC809 can handle up to 12 meter runs, and runs can be grouped in up to 12 Meter Stations.

The ROC809 provides outstanding PID loop control capability that rivals that found in dedicated process controllers. The control firmware incorporates:– Pre-configured templates for basic
PID loop control
– Up to 16 PID control loops each with override support
– Support for both analog and discrete control devices.
In addition, special loop control strategies can be implemented using the extensive programming capabilities of the ROC809.

The ROC809 also provides you with Function Sequence Table (FST) control.
You construct control strategies by choosing from a set of logic, math, comparison, time-related, control-related, database and general command sets.
Current ROC300 users can run their FSTs on the ROC809 with only minor modifications, such as redefining input points.

DS800 provides a standard programming interface that lets people with different backgrounds and skills create different elements of a program. When completed, all elements will work together seamlessly.
For example, if you program PLCs, DS800 lets you create programs in ladder logic. And, if your background is process control, you can create programs using Function Block diagrams.

User C/C++ Programming capability allows experienced programmers to implement control strategies in the ROC809.
We provide a library of commands that allows you use off-the-shelf programming tools to interface to the ROC809s database.
The User C/C++ support for the ROC809 was developed so programmers do not need an extensive knowledge of the firmware architecture.
