The flow m easurem ent is one of the m ost im portant industrial m easuring processes. This process,

incorporating a throttle elem ent in a pipeline through w hich a fluid (liquid or gas) flow s and using the difference

betw een the upstream and dow nstream pressures of the throttle elem ent, is m ostly used in today's industrial

m easurem ent and autom atic control of the flow s of fluids. W hen a fluid flow ing through a pipeline passes a

throttled (contracted) part of the pipeline, the flow velocity increases according to the equation of continuity

and the pressure decreases according to the B ernoulli's equation, denoting the existence of a close relation

betw een the pressure difference and the flow velocity. Based on this relation, the flow rate can be determ ined

by m easuring the differential pressure.

The C om pany specializes in engineering, m anufacturing and supplying various kinds of throttle elem ents, the

essentials in the m easurem ent of fluid flow .

There are various types of m easuring elem ents including differential pressure and volum etric types.

C urrently m ostly used is the differential pressure type.

The representative m easuring elem ent is orifice plate. O ther elem ents include flow nozzle and venturi tube.

They are specified by JIS, ASM E, ISO , D IN, BS, SPINK, SHELL REPO RT 1312M etc.

W hen a throttle elem ent is interposed in a pipeline, a difference is produced betw een the pressures at

upstream and dow nstream of the throttle elem ent as illustrated in Fig. 1. This difference (h=p1-p2) is called

differential pressure.

The fluid passing through the section 2 gradually regains its pressure as it flow s dow nstream , but the

dow nstream pressure cannot be recovered up to the upstream pressure, because part of the pressure being

lost. This loss is called a pressure loss (perm anent pressure loss = p1-p3).

The extent of this pressure loss depends on the type of throttle elem ents and their diam eter ratio, as show n

in Fig. 2.

The relation betw een the flow rate and the differential pressure is given by:

From the above, the relation betw een the flow rate and the differential pressure w here the densityis constant but the flow rate is variable, is as listed in Table 1. In other words, the flow rate isobtainable by m easuring the differential pressure. W hen the density is variable (w hen the pressure andtem perature are variable), the true flow rate can be given by com pensating the variance of the densityby the above equations (this, how ever, is not applicable w hen the density varies to a great extent).

pressure tube for liquid.

The hole in pressure tap shall be of smooth inside surface and correct roundness, and the edges

shall smoothly be finished.

D rain Hole

For liquids containing solid particles that are likely to sedim ent or for vapors likely to deposit w ater

condensate, this orifice plate is used w ith its eccentric bore bottom flush w ith the bottom of the piping inside

surface so that the sedim entation of such inclusions is avoided. Likew ise, for gases or vapors, it m ay be

installed w ith its eccentric bore top flush w ith the bore top of the piping to avoid the stay of gas or vapor in

its vicinity. Flange taps or vena contracta taps are used for this orifice plate.

Air H ole

This has special features such as sim ple structure, high accuracy, and easy m ounting and dism ounting. Theorifice plates are correctly finished to the dim ensions, surface roughness, and flatness to the applicable standard.Differential pressure is m easured through flange taps, vena contracta taps, radius taps, or corner taps.

The bore of this orifice plate is a sem icircle to perform the sam e function as the eccentric orifice plate. This

is used for the sim ilar purposes.

Flange taps or vena conracta taps are em ployed to take out fluid pressures.

The inlet edge of the bore of this orifice plate is rounded to a quarter circle. This orifice plate is principally

used for m easuring flow rates of low Reynolds Num bers.

Flange taps or corner taps are used.

The square orifice plate is used for square pipings. Its functions are sim ilar to those of the concentric orifice

plate.

W hen installing an orifice plate, m ake sureof its upstream and downstream sides, itsprecise centering with piping, and theposition of the gaskets so that they shouldnot be obstructive. If an orifice plate whosedownstream end of bore is beveled to 45°is erroneously installed upstream side down-stream , the m easured flow rates will belower than the actual flow rates.

O rifice ring assem bly is the com bination of orifice plate, a

ring having pressure outlet opening, and gasket. This is

settled betw een pipe flanges and is used for m easurem ent

of com paratively low pressure.

T his can be used for various flow rate, pressure and

tem perature only by changing orifice plate.

D ifferential pressure is taken out by corner tap.

Orifice Flange assembly is the combination of orifice plate, flanges

having pressure outlet opening, and bolts, nuts and gasket.

Flanges are, of JIS, ASME, JPI, etc.

These shall be connected to line pipe by:

1) butt welding(weld neck) or,

2) insert and weld(slip-on, socket weld).

Also, there are flat face(FF), raised face(RF), ring joint(RTJ),

etc., depends on the shape of gasket seat.

Flange tap is used for take out differential pressure.

Type FN, Type FNP

Flow nozzles are suitable for high tem perature, high pressure and large

am ount of the fluid.

A lso, they can be used for the liquid containing a little am ount of

suspended solids without any problem com pared with orifice plates.

C om pared w ith the orifice plate of sam e size and under the sam e

conditions, flow nozzles can be used for 60% or m ore than that of the

orifice plate having the sam e size.

Also, flow nozzles are m echanically stronger than orifice plates.

In addition to flow nozzle itself, w e can also supply flow nozzle assem blies

having upstream and dow nstream short pipes.

C om pared w ith the other throttle type, this has very little pressure-loss, long life, and also, correct m easurem ent

of the flow because of no deposit in the throat portion.

In addition to the above, this type can be applied to various sizes such as sm all size (m achine-finished

one-block) and m edium to large sizes (plate-fabricated).

Type RO

The restriction orifices are used for reducing fluid pressure and are designed som ew hat different from the

orifice plates that are used for m easuring flow rates.

There are som e types of restriction orifices, including a single plate with a single hole, a single perforated plate

(having diffused holes), and a set of w elded m ulti orifices (a m ultistage orifice) w hich are used for high-pressure

high-tem perature fluids.

The bore edge of the restriction orifices can be surface-hardened with stellite w elding or by nitriding.

O rifice m eter runs are used for m easuring the flow at higher accuracy.

The orifice m eter runs are therefore, not the ones sim ply w eld pipes to upstream and dow nstream sides of a

orifice assem bly, but the ones w elding sm aller inside diam eter pipes to sm aller diam eter of flanges, then, finish

inside diam eter of the pipe/flange assem bly by boring or honing to the specified dim ensions and w ithin the

required tolerances and surface roughness.
