Florida’s MPO Alliances – A Model for Regional Planning and Project Implementation.
Jeff Kramer, AICPCenter for Urban Transportation Research
Background
• Over time:• UZAs have been combined• New UZAs have been
designated• UZAs have become
contiguous• large projects impacted
multiple MPO areas
• MPOs were asked to consider consolidating or improving regional coordination
Background
• MPOs, recognized the value of improved coordination across MPO boundaries
• But wanted to maintain autonomy for a variety of reasons
• So, MPOs formed formal alliances of two or more MPOs working together on issues of joint interest
MPO Regional Alliances
• 22 of Florida’s 26 MPOs have entered into formal arrangements to coordinate regional transportation planning activities with one or more neighboring MPOs
• Resulting in:• Regional planning activities
and studies• Support and programming
for larger projects important to multiple MPO areas
