THEAPPLICATIONPROCESS

Itisassumedthatyouhavedonesomedegreeofpreliminarygenealogicalresearchand have found a connection within your family tree that goes back to a knownMayflower Passenger. Gathering and providing the documentation necessary toprove each generation’s connection will be the key to completing a successfulapplication. There are threemethods of starting the application process and youhavetheoptiontobeginwithanyorallofthefollowing:

1.FAMILYMEMBERALREADYINTHESOCIETY:UsearecentlyapprovedGSMDapplication from an immediate family member for the same MayflowerPassenger you are proposing for membership. Immediate family means,parents,childrenorfirstcousinfromthelinecarrier.Pleaseobtainacopyoftheirapprovedapplicationandsendittous.Recentlymeanswithinthelasttenyears.However,withrespecttousingapprovedMayflowerapplicationsfrom family members, we must include this disclaimer: As a standarddisclaimer, wemustcallyourattentiontothefactthateventhoughalineagewas approved in the past, it may not be approved today without additionalsource documentation. Even though a papermay list references, some of thesourcescitedmaynotbepresentinthefile.Standardstodayrequirethatsuchsourcesbeprovided.Manyolderapplicationshavenodocumentswiththematall.Often,manyofthedocumentscitedwereneveractuallysubmittedbecausetherewerenocopymachinesavailableatthetimeoftheoriginalapplication.Itmaybenecessary toupdate evenmore recentlyapproved lineages, providingdocuments for events that have occurred since the lineage was originallysubmittedortomakeupformissingorweakdocumentation.

ONRECORD:ContacttheGeneralSocietyofMayflowerDescendantsandfillout their on-line lineage form here:https://www.themayflowersociety.org/join/preliminary-review-form. TheGSMDlineagereportwillconfirmthatyourproposedlinecanbepursuedformembership and determine if there already is an approved line to apassengerwith some or all of your generations. The lineage report can beusedtocompletesomeofthedocumentationneeded.Thisisrecommended, but can be considered an optional approach since there is a $25 fee inPlymouthforthisservice.

The Colony has a one-page lineage sheet that can be filled out by theapplicant. Regardless of which path is chosen, once a lineage has been preliminarilydetermined to be valid, the full application process may begin. The Mayflowermembership process in Florida starts at the local colony level with the applicantworking with the Colony Historian to prepare an application that proves aMayflowerline.

ImportantNotes:

• The application process is a collaborative effort between the applicant and theColonyHistorianorAssistantHistorians.

• TheworkoftheColonyHistorianandAssistantHistoriansareasvolunteers.

• Genealogical research by the Colony Historians is not routinely provided toapplicants. However, as time allows, we do assist applicants find resources andrecordsthatmaybeavailableon-lineoratthelocallibrary’sgenealogysection.

• Ultimately, it is the responsibility of the applicant to find and provide all vitalrecordsrelatedtothelatestthreegenerations,asoutlinedbelow.Anyvitalrecordsavailableforearliergenerationsshouldalsobeprovidedbytheapplicant.

• The goal of collaboration between the Colony Historian and the applicant is topresentaclearconnectionbetweentheapplicantandtheirMayflowerpassengerbyproviding primary and secondary documents that sufficiently show how onegenerationlinkstothepreviousone.

FindAGrave: Asnotedintheguide, youcannotusethebiographiesfromFindAGraveassupportingdocumentationforyourapplication. However, theinformationis very helpful to check dates andplaces, siblings etc. YouMAYuse a photo of agravestonetoprovidedocumentationofbirth, deathandpossiblyconfirmationofamarriage. This is secondary to a death certificate, birth certificate or marriagecertificate.However,forGenerations7-10,sometimesthisisthebestresourceyoumay be able to find. LikeUS GenWeb, FindA Grave is a totally volunteer driveneffort so not all graves listed have photos of the stones.
