The NEVADA SOCIETY of MAYFLOWER DESCENDANTS Chartered 1 DEC 1956 Letter from the Governor: Greetings: Most of you have received emails from me over the past two years. As Governor, I view using the tools of technology to be of great benefit and encourage fellow members to utilize email, Facebook, and other tools of social networking to share information and communicate with one another. To this end I have created a Nevada Society of Mayflower Descendants Group on Facebook and have invited all of you to participate. Mike Rozelle from Las Vegas has generously donated a website for our organization, however, at this time we do not have a webmaster with time to devote to this project. If anyone can devote time, the society would benefit from having an active website. I would like to see people post their line of descent from the Pilgrim families and establish a dialogue throughout the year and use it to post events and information that all may view and benefit. Junior members have an opportunity to be part of the ‘Mayflower Jr Members 2009’ Facebook page. You can search for Mayflower Descendant group pages in general, by names , such as John Howland, or other state societies. I would like to welcome our six new members: Jinny Anderson, Montyne Connolly, Steve Holm, Martha Kader, Ruth Matley, and Toni Milleret. I would like to welcome our three new junior members: Vanessa Barker, Kaince Young, and Myles Young. I look forward to meeting you. The luncheon was well attended in 2008, highlighting Sunday scheduling as working better for members to attend due Saturday conflicts with other genealogical organizations. If you would like to see pictures from the luncheon, they are posted on the Facebook page, Nevada Society of Mayflower Descendants, group site. (Search for Nevada Society of Mayflower Descendants). Currently we have 12 members who have participated. Sunday was rebooked for the same delightful Treasures Room on the Second Floor, east side, of the Atlantis Hotel. See attached map and RSVP form. Please RSVP to both the treasurer and email the Governor or sign on to Facebook and reply to your invite for the 2009 Annual Nevada Society Compact Luncheon. The best entrance is on the EAST side from the parking lot near the sports book, otherwise you will walk all the way across the property from Virginia Street. The membership brochure and copies will again be available to review, e.g. in draft form, at the luncheon. An email copy will be distributed later upon member requests. I am pleased to announce the speaker is Professor Jeanne Wendel, PhD, from the Economics Department at the University of Nevada, Reno. Dr. Wendel subspecializes in health care economics and is deeply involved with the ongoing efforts with the State of Nevada concerning HIT, Health Information Technologies. She is a lively speaker and the health care discussion should be most interesting from an economist involved with health care reform. Dues are $18 annually and the Nevada Society encourages a members Spouse, Potential member or a Friend of the Society to become an Associate member. The annual fee is only $ 5.00. I am changing the order of dues notices. Due to issues with emailing dues notices in 2008, there will be three notices sent, one via email in October with the luncheon announcement, a second mid November, and a final notice via US Post Office (snail mail) in December. Because of the earlier requirements for submitting year end reports to Plymouth, due on February 1 st , it will be necessary to impose a LATE FEE of $ 10.00 for dues payments received AFTER 31 DEC. The society does not want to see the membership rolls decrease due to slow payment of dues; however we are accountable to the

The NEVADA SOCIETY of MAYFLOWER DESCENDANTS

Chartered 1 DEC 1956 Letter from the Governor:  Greetings:

Most of you have received emails from me over the past two years.

Dr. Wendel sub‐specializes in health care economics and is deeply involved with the ongoing efforts with the State of Nevada concerning HIT, Health Information Technologies. Because of the earlier requirements for submitting year end reports to Plymouth, due on February 1st, it will be necessary to impose a LATE FEE of $ 10.00 for dues payments received AFTER 31 DEC. The society does not want to see the membership rolls decrease due to slow payment of dues; however we are accountable to the

General Society and be in compliance. We will drop members who have not paid their fees on record by January 15th, 2010 or contacted the treasurer with their intent to pay. Members may reinstate for $28.00 in the current year. Reinstatement letters went out to those who were dropped from the 2008 roster possibly due to the confusion from email requests for dues and the amnesty is given for the $10 reinstatement fee if they pay dues for both years.     I understand that economic times are difficult and the membership fees are from your discretionary funds. Unlike several other states, the Nevada Mayflower Society is NOT in financial trouble and continues to support the Five Generations Project. I request your support of the Society to participate in its functions and contribute what you can. One way you can contribute is to buy the book ‘Thanksgiving: The Pilgrims’ First Year in America’. The author is offering to send our state Society $3 if you order using the coupon attached to the end of this newsletter.

Historian’s Report Julie Patterson  The Nevada Society of Mayflower Descendants welcomed in six new general members and three new Junior members this year.  We are ready to file applications for 3 prospective members in the very near future.  We’ve been working with 15 prospective members during the year.  Now is the time to encourage your relatives to join the Nevada Society.  Using your approved lineage, it won’t take much work or money to get them in.  A new membership costs $103, with low annual membership dues of $18.  And they will get an impressive Mayflower Certificate to display.

Secretary's Report Melinda Whitney   Reno's 2008 Annual Compact Meeting and Luncheon was held at the Atlantis Hotel on Sunday, November 9. As always, it was wonderful to have time to meet and chat with old and new members and be served a delicious meal before the meeting began at 1:45.   The members discussed the completion of a membership directory and approved a motion to remove the written information regarding dues out of the Nevada bylaws.  A change would be more in line with our current practice of dues reporting.  Plans are in the works to design and develop a State website open to everyone interested in our Nevada Society of Mayflower Descendants.  DGG JB Coats moved that we donate $500.00 to the Five Generation Project and $500.00 to the Reno Family History center.  The motion was approved and passed. The members also approved the payment of the Historian's fees and expenses.

Our guest speaker, Patricia Fox, MA, demonstrated some of the remarkable new electronic tools in use in many of the Washoe County School District. "Smart Boards" with computer interfaces allow teachers to import and display web information to a whole class. Teachers can also create and display interactive lessons for large or small groups of students.  The meeting was adjourned at 2:45. Submitted by Melinda Whitney Secretary

Treasurer’s Report Andy Morehead

I am now entering my second year as treasure of the Nevada Society of Mayflower Decendents.  I offered to undertake this position to help the Society knowing I am not an accountant.  The extent of my accounting knowledge I learned at university and was limited to debits to the window and credits to the hall.  So I guessed this would be a simple effort on my part and it has been.

Our bank account runs on an even platform.  We have enough of a balance to carry us from year to year.  We currently have about 140 members and our main effort is to collect annuals dues and pass on to the National Society their share.  We also make annual donations to the local Family History Center to support the efforts they make in genealogy, and to the National Society for special projects.

Annual dues are upon receipt.  We usually try to combine them with our annual meeting which is held in early November.  Please pay your dues promptly and mail to:  Andy Morehead, Treasurer, 1287 Tule Dr., Reno, Nevada, 89521‐5803
