Florida Hospital Transfusion Service Goes Wireless Ericka Urrutia-King, BSMT Florida Hospital Orlando INTRODUCTION F lorida Hospital Adventist System Transfusion Service in Orlando piloted a study to test the use of an External Remote Wireless ermometer System (ERWTS) to replace the commonly used Temperature Chart System. After comparing a number of companies, the laboratory decided to evaluate the AeroScout® MobileView® system from STANLEY Healthcare. e AeroScout system uses a Wi-Fi Sensor Tag (T5) to monitor temperature and humidity. Data is collected and wirelessly sent to an electronic database for easy access and storage. METHODS T5 Sensor Tags were placed throughout the Blood Bank Department in all instruments that had previously had their temperature monitored either by a chart recorder or checked manually. e T5a Sensor Tags (Tag-5100) were placed in all refrigerators and platelet incubators. T5a Sensor Tags have an on-board temperature sensor, encased in a stabilizing container or “potting kit” containing glass beads to help stabilize temperature readings and avoid fluctuations. e T5b Sensor Tags (Tag- 5110) which have an external temperature sensor were placed in all freezers, water baths, and heating blocks. e T5b Sensor Tag “potting kit” used for the freezers contained a glycerol solution, while the water baths have the T5b Sensor Tag temperature sensor placed directly in the water. e Transfusion Service Department took a total of 6 months of data collection and comparison. e validation was completed using the collected data from the final 4 weeks. e data collection and comparison was based on 3 different criteria. For the refrigerators, platelet incubators and freezers, we used the AeroScout history report, the AeroScout alarm event report and the Equipment Temperature Chart. For the water baths and room temperature, we used the AeroScout history report, the AeroScout alarm event report and the weekly average result of collected temperature data. We began the comparison by observing at the AeroScout history report for each asset and comparing that to the paper chart for each instrument or the weekly average result of collected temperature data. Once those two criteria were compared, we reviewed the AeroScout alarm event. If there was an alarm that was generated, we looked at either the instrument chart or weekly average result and the AeroScout history report to see if there was an outlier either high or lowconfirming the alarm. Once the validation was completed and all the SOPs were reviewed and signed, Florida Hospital Orlando went live with the remote wireless thermometers and removed all paper charts from their instruments. Charts are still available for all instruments as a backup system in case the AeroScout solution is down for over 4 hours, according to AABB standards. AeroScout MobileView allows the technologists to view any alarm and to write a corrective action. All the assets are reviewed weekly and a weekly supervisor review report is generated by the MIS AeroScout team for the supervisor to complete. RESULTS As a result of this study, the Blood Bank Technologists at Florida Hospital do not have to change charts on a weekly basis and check temperatures daily, saving valuable time that is now used to continue extending the healing ministry of Christ to our patients. INTRODUCTION

Florida Hospital Adventist System Transfusion Service in Orlando piloted a study to test the

use of an External Remote Wireless Thermometer System (ERWTS) to replace the commonly used Temperature Chart System.

After comparing a number of companies, the laboratory decided to evaluate the AeroScout® MobileView® system from STANLEY Healthcare. The AeroScout system uses a Wi-Fi Sensor Tag (T5) to monitor temperature and humidity. Data is collected and wirelessly sent to an electronic database for easy access and storage.

METHODST5 Sensor Tags were placed throughout the Blood Bank Department in all instruments that had previously had their temperature monitored either by a chart recorder or checked manually. The T5a Sensor Tags (Tag-5100) were placed in all refrigerators and platelet incubators. T5a Sensor Tags have an on-board temperature sensor, encased in a stabilizing container or “potting kit” containing glass beads to help stabilize temperature readings and avoid fluctuations. The T5b Sensor Tags (Tag-5110) which have an external temperature sensor were placed in all freezers, water baths, and heating blocks. The T5b Sensor Tag “potting kit” used for the freezers contained a glycerol solution, while the water baths have the T5b Sensor Tag temperature sensor placed directly in the water. The Transfusion Service Department took a total of 6 months of data collection and comparison. The validation was completed using the collected data from the final 4 weeks.

The data collection and comparison was based on 3 different criteria. For the refrigerators, platelet

incubators and freezers, we used the AeroScout history report, the AeroScout alarm event report and the Equipment Temperature Chart. For the water baths and room temperature, we used the AeroScout history report, the AeroScout alarm event report and the weekly average result of collected temperature data.
