Top Ten Financial Aid MythsDaniel T. BarkowitzAssistant Vice President, Financial Aid and Veterans’ Affairs, Valencia College@barkowitzIt all begins with the FAFSA, YES! But it doesn’t end there… So much more occurs once FAFSA data is received by the college or university, and some of it may seem confusing or invisible to you. In this session, a financial aid administrator with nearly thirty years of experience will highlight some common misunderstandings or myths about how financial aid is practiced. Come learn about key practices that can help your students including dependency overrides, professional judgment, needs analysis, verification, packaging, and other less understood aid practices. Alternative Credit and Adult Learners: Changing our CultureDr. Michelle HortonDirector, Complete Florida, University of West Florida Innovation Institute@mchorton4Dr. Karen RasmussenAssociate Vice President, University of West FloridaAlthough many first time in college students enter postsecondary education institutions with already earned credit—with institutional corresponding expectations that such credit has been earned—the typical returning adult student does not experience a similar situation. Resetting the individual and institutional mindset for knowledge, skills, and abilities that an adult learner brings to the table involves awareness, policies, and protocols. This foundation enables institutions to be proactive in discussions with adult learners about their backgrounds. From Admissions staff to Academic Administrators, a common message can be developed that supports returning adult learners in achieving success in a postsecondary world. Transformative Translations: How Higher Ed can Collaborate with Business to Meet Labor Market NeedsDr. Michael PrestonExecutive Director, Florida Consortium of Metropolitan Research Universities@mprest13For years the general assumption is a college degree is as good as gold. Get one, get employed. Not so fast. Study after study have revealed employers and colleges are on different wavelengths when it comes to career readiness. College executives think we are doing a great job, while industry leaders and employers believe we are underpreparing students for the workforce. The key to this disconnect could be in the nomenclature. We may be using different words and outcomes to arrive at the same point. This session will explore two approaches to closing this definition divide: one through realigning learning outcomes and the other through infiltrating industry itself. Using Data-Informed Practice to Improve College SuccessDr. Melissa IrvinAssistant Dean of Advising and Analytics, University of South FloridaStudent success professionals often spend the bulk of our time working with students after they show signs they will not be successful. With the explosion of analytics technologies, many colleges have increased access to data to evaluate a student’s likelihood of success. In this session, we will examine strategies to assist student services staff with using data who are not data experts or comfortable with statistics. Activities will include learning to identify metrics that can inform practice and using data to design strategic outreach to students. Building Bridges Across The Bay - How 2 Large Counties Came Together In One LCANDr. Jesse CoraggioVice President, Institutional Effectiveness and Academic Services, St. Petersburg CollegeChuck TiernanDirector, Community Impact and LEAP Network, Community Foundation of Tampa Bay@LEAP4college

Hillsborough and Pinellas County communities both assessed a great need to generate more people with postsecondary credentials into a rapidly growing, changing workforce. An existing LCAN, the LEAP Network, provided an opportunity for them to use strong collective impact strategy to not only work collaboratively, but also honor and build upon the strengths of all community partners across the bay. A traditionally competitive region, we’ll touch on the “go it alone or go together” discussion, and how we honored the unique nature of all cities and towns to prevent overshadowing by Tampa, without losing benefits and strengths of collaboration. Coaching from Behind to Get Ahead: Activating Peer Teams to Expand College Counseling CapacityRaquel FigueroaManaging Director, Program Implementation, College Summit@ROC_storyGary LinnenManaging Director, Program Operations and Innovation, College SummitAs most high schools continue to labor under an unrealistic 491:1 student-to-counselor ratio, tapping capable students to support college access opportunities for their peers is emerging as a solution. The first step after embracing the concept of youth activation is building an effective team of student leaders. This session will offer guidance on how to build such a team, how to guide students by “coaching from behind,” and how to hand the reins over to students allowing their insights, creative ideas, data-gathering, and analysis to lead to new solutions and increased capacity in college counseling.
