Introduction• What is Floral Design?

• The art of organizing the design elements inherent in plant materials, container, and accessories according to the principles of design.

Page 3: Floral Design

Design Materials• The Four Basic Types of Design

Materials are….• Line Flowers• Mass Flowers• Form Flowers• Filler Flowers

Page 4: Floral Design

Line Flowers• Tall spike of flowers with florets

blooming along the stem.• Create the outline for an

arrangement & establish the height and width as well as curvilinear lines.

• Examples:• Snapdragons• Gladiolus• Liatris

Mass Flowers• Have the flower head on the terminal

end of the stem.• Draw attention to the focal point and

add mass and weight to the arrangement.

• Cover the floral form and help fill empty areas with flowers.

• Examples:• Carnations• Roses• Chrysanthemums

Page 8: Floral Design

Form Flowers• Unique in shape or color such as….

• Bird of paradise• Orchids • Calla lily

• Create the accent or focal point or area of the arrangement to attract the viewer’s attention.

Page 10: Floral Design

Filler Flowers• Have sprays of flowers such as baby’s

breath and statice, or they are like ferns.

• Are used to fill empty spaces and to accent the other floral material within the arrangement.

• Also used to cover or hide the mechanics of the arrangement including the frame, supports, ties, and etc.

Floral Design Shapes

Page 13: Floral Design

Floral Design Shapes• Round

• Flower arrangement is basically round in shape.

Page 14: Floral Design

Floral Design Shapes• Oval

• Flowers make an oval shaped arrangement.

Page 15: Floral Design

Floral Design Shapes• Fan

• Flowers make a fan or semicircle shaped arrangement.

Page 16: Floral Design

Floral Design Shapes• Triangle

• Equilateral • All three sides

are the same length.

• Asymmetrical • Sides of

different lengths.

Page 17: Floral Design

Floral Design Shapes• Right angle

• Flowers make L shape.

Page 18: Floral Design

Floral Design Shapes• Inverted-T

• The flowers make an upside down T (⊥).

Page 19: Floral Design

Floral Design Shapes• Vertical

• Straight up, in a bud vase.

• Tall vertically, narrow horizontally.

Page 20: Floral Design

Floral Design Shapes• Horizontal

• Long horizontally and short vertically.

Page 21: Floral Design

Floral Design Shapes• Diagonal

• Halfway between vertical and horizontal.

Page 22: Floral Design

Floral Design Shapes• Crescent

• Shaped like a quarter moon.

Page 23: Floral Design

Floral Design Shapes• Hogarth Curve

• Shaped like an S curve.

Techniques in Floral Design

Page 25: Floral Design

Design Principles• Balance

• When the flower size and container flow together and complement each other.

Page 26: Floral Design

Design Principles• Focal point

• Creates the accent and interest to catch the eye.

Page 27: Floral Design

Design Principles• Proportion

• Keeps relative size, color, and texture of the flowers to create a pleasing arrangement.

• Floral designs should be at least 1 ½ to 2 times the height or width of the container.

Page 28: Floral Design

Design Principles - Proportion

Page 29: Floral Design

Design Principles• Scale

• The principle that the design must be in proportion to the surrounding area where it is placed.

Page 30: Floral Design

Design Principles• Accent

• Used to catch and draw attention to the design.

Page 31: Floral Design

Design Principles• Repetition

• Accentuates the flowers and colors by repeating their use throughout the design.

Page 32: Floral Design

Design Principles• Rhythm

• Creates a sense of continuity or flowing together.

Page 33: Floral Design

Design Principles• Harmony

• When all parts flow together to give a completed look to the arrangement.

Page 34: Floral Design

Design Principles• Unity

• When the flowers complement each other through color, size, shape.

Page 35: Floral Design

Design Techniques• Step 1

• Select a design shape.

Page 36: Floral Design
