On January 9, 2009 this chapter of the Alfa Romeo Owners Club will have existed for an even fifty years.

Denny Broud has researched and discovered the names of some of the founding members, two turned out to

be people that were heroes of mine when I was but a teenager. We have come up with an event we think

would be a significant way to commemorate our illustrious anniversary.

Dr. Frederick Simeone has occupied his life as a very highly regarded surgeon in Philadelphia, a developer

of the best automotive library in the world and a collection of individually significant race cars. His cars are

not just examples of great cars; they are specific examples with the racing successes. If the car acquired a

dented fender at hay bales at Le Mans, the dent remains.

Dr. Simeone has established a

foundation and a remarkable

museum as a vehicle to teach

the history of the cars story of

mankind’s sense of natural

competitiveness. Where

better to come to understand

this than the racetrack?

Dr. Simeone has graciously

agreed to host our anniversary

event on January 10th

at his

museum. This museum is

quite spectacular, featuring

about a hundred cars

including ten Alfa Romeos.

We will arrive at the museum at about noon to be introduced and then partake of an informal sit-down

catered lunch. When finished eating, Dr. Simeone himself will give us the tour. The depth of his knowledge

of the histories of these cars is phenomenal and the liveliness of his presentation is fascinating. We are

guaranteed to have wonderful time!!

Dr. Simeone is a gentleman and has extended to us an

amazing enthusiasm of welcome.

Please get in touch with me if you would like to attend.

We obviously need to provide a pretty close number of

attendees. ([email protected])

A group of Capital Chapter members gathered the evening before the elections to enjoy each other’s company.

President Harlan Hadley called the meeting to order at eight o’clock. He announced that David Holland is supporting Alex as his deputy of the 2010 Convention Committee chair. Harlan said the

next year the Rockville Car Show will be featuring Italian cars as their “marquee of the year”. He expressed the importance of Alfa owners to register early so as to have a goodly number of Alfas listed in the program and representing the Alfa marquee in the feature section.

Harlan talked about an event that is being planned the weekend following January 9th, the fiftieth anniversary of the Capital Chapter. He is arranging a tour of Fred Simeone’s new museum in Philadelphia with lunch nearby with Fred Simeone and Ted McNair, the curator, on Saturday, January 10th. (see Harlan’s Front Page Article)

An Event at the Simeone Foundation Museum.

Options are available to make a weekend of it by including a tour of David George’s restoration shop on Sunday.

Gene Kessler mentioned the announcement in Auto Week that Fiat has delayed the entry of Alfa to the US until 2011.

Charlie Drake offered to host the holiday party this year. Because of his Army Reserve duties, the date of the party was moved to December 13th. It will start at 3 o’clock with the elections taking place at 6 p.m. and the party ending at 8 p.m. All present unanimously agreed on having Trish Broud be secretary, making her also a member of the Board. After checking that she would not step on any toes, she accepted. Harlan said that he checked into the chapter by-laws and nominations from the floor are okay and nominations are also being accepted before the meeting. As reported in laws weeks Alfantics, nominations before the meeting are to be

sent to Harlan and/or Trish.

A presentation by Pat Sinatra of Mamock Automotive Electric in Annapolis started at 8:30. He started by saying that it was nice to be around people who enjoyed cars and taking care to keep them running. He said rather than just standing up and talking, he’d rather have a more informal situation where people asked him questions to ensure that he discussed things of interest to those present. The following statements were made during the discussion.

Electric parts are most affected by age.

Manufacturer insert spore that grow into gremlins.

When manufacturers order parts to be made they give a price and specs. The parts guys work to the price and specs and “you get what you pay for.”

The same part numbers may be put in different boxes that reflect the different makes of cars that will be priced accordingly. Therefore, many times you can buy the same part at different prices.

Pat has a repair shop in Annapolis that he uses for alternator and generator work.

He has been retrofitting air conditioners from R12 (“Freon”) to 134 because 134 has less fluorocarbons and no PFCs. They are getting ready to get rid of 134 and haven’t decided what to replace it with. By the way, “Freon” is a DuPont brand name.

Rewiring a generator with finer wire will push the voltage because finer wire gives more turns.

1. Attendees: Alex Csank – Convention Chair Dave Holland – Convention Vice Chair/ Tours and Tourism Bob Lubran – Registration/ Website Dana Kern – Treasurer/ Website Denny Broud – Schedule Frank Smith – Track and Competition Events Harlan Hadley – Concorso Trish Broud – Hotel & Meals Roger Phillips - Awards Sherry Thackeray – Gimmick Rally Bert Straus – Art & Program Brad Mellor – DC Tours Steve Meima – Publicity Rick Osial – Sponsors & Advertising Judy Letcher – Vendors Brewster Thackeray – Member at Large Mike Hemsley – Guest Speakers (attended via speaker phone) Charlie Drake – Chapter VP

Absent: Kathleen Haley-Csank – Secretary Jack Rugh – TSD Rally

2. Chairman’s Remarks: Alex welcomed all attendees and provided update of dates for 2009 convention in Portland, OR (15-19 July 2009). Progress was reviewed and Alex provided an update of hotel contract negotiations. He informed all that he has requested a proposal for convention logo items from a St. Louis company “Novelty Rabbit”, which has been doing Alfa logo items and attending conventions for many years. They will provide a proposal which will be shared with the committee soon. He also added that it now appears unlikely that Alfa Romeo will be returning to the USA as planned by 2010, and stressed that our convention will not be likely to receive financial support from Alfa Romeo directly.

Budget Considerations and Planning: Dana updated all on convention finances and added that we have the $2000 convention loan in the Capital Chapter bank account. She has produced the beginnings of a budget plan for the convention.

Meetings: Alex stressed the need to keep

meetings focused and time-limited to 2 hours for regular meetings. Dave Holland provided a proposal to conduct telephone ‘conference-call’ meetings for at least some of the upcoming regular meetings. The group agreed that he arrange a conference-call meeting system to be used for most regular meetings. The meeting schedule was discussed and it was agreed that meetings will be bi-monthly until after the 2009 convention in Portland. This means that the meetings will be held in January, March and May of 2009, with monthly meetings beginning after the 2009 convention in July. The dates for these meetings will be set once input has been received regarding preferences from committee members.

Committee Structure and Responsibilities: Alex stressed that all committee members must have a good understanding of each of their areas of responsibility and that these must be provided in writing by each sub-committee chair.

Development of detailed plan, milestones, specific tasks and completion dates: Alex reviewed the AROC Planning Guide and informed all that he is drafting a ‘Plan of Action and Milestones’ document, which will be used by all members to guide us in planning and maintain control of deadlines and requirements. He anticipated having a document ready in initial form early in 2009.

Website development/ website committee: The importance of a website being established in at least a basic format was stressed. A volunteer was sought to begin work on a basic Convention website. Dana and Bob agreed to share responsibility for the website’s development.

3. Finance Report – Dana reported convention finances stand at $2000 as a result of AROC loan. Dana has put together a basic Budget planning document, but must get plans and anticipated budgets from each Sub-Committee Chair.

Discussion by members regarding how to raise funds for the convention included using and/or borrowing funds from chapter resources. This discussion will be continued and specific funding requirements will be forwarded to the chapter BOD as necessary.

4. Committee Reports:

a. Registration – Bob will require information and resources from recent convention host chapters. Alex agreed to provide Bob with contacts from other chapters.

b. Publicity – Steve has a basic publicity plan at the ready. Discussion revolved around putting publicity together locally but not nationally before the 2009 convention, and then on a national scale as soon as the 2009 convention ends.

c. Scheduling – Denny pointed out that there are now at least two versions of the schedule. The schedule is in flux, particularly because of possible shifts of the Track day to the Thursday instead of Friday to help reduce costs. The committee’s goal is to have the schedule finalized prior to July 2009 to present at the Portland Convention.

d. Sponsors and Advertising – Rick requested everyone’s assistance to help identify sponsors and advertisers.

e. Speed and Track Events – Frank informed all that Summit Point had confirmed our reserved track day for Friday, 25 June. He also discussed the probable cost savings of shifting the track day from Friday to Thursday. He requested additional time be devoted to the Time Trials and Autocross in the schedule and pointed out that the Parade Laps should occur over the lunch hour. Alex agreed to amend the schedule accordingly.

f. Awards – Roger offered that there are many variations with widely varied costs for awards. Because awards will be a major expense, he was asked to look into low, medium and higher cost proposals.

g. Hotel, Meals, and Meetings – Trish mentioned that the meals as stated in the hotel’s standard menu provide little variety for those with special diets. She was asked to liaise directly with the hotel caterer to discuss alternative meal choices for those with special requirements. The security for the meal at the proposed Tire Kickin’ Cook-Out was also discussed. The meal and drinks will only be provided to those with tickets to the event as identified on their entry/ registration badge.

h. Concorso – Harlan updated all regarding the numerous invitations he has made to many owners of pre-war Alfas. He also offered that many Tipo 33 cars will be likely to attend, particularly if they have available track time.

i. Tours – Dave informed all of some tour information he has received regarding bus tours to DC. A DC Monument bus tour will be a feature at the convention. Other possible tours discussed included a White House tour, a tour of the Eisenhower Farm and the Civil-War Battlefields.

Brad pointed out that an early bird driving tour beginning at 6AM would likely be too early for many. All agreed that a 7AM start would be more suitable.

j. Art, Logo, Design – Bert displayed the almost complete logo, but is having difficulty finalizing the word art required. He asked for anyone who may have a better computer program to provide assistance.

k. Speakers – Mike called in on speaker-phone and informed all that Brewster had received confirmation that Jamie Kitman of Automobile Magazine (and other publications) agreed to speak at the banquet. Additionally, Harlan spoke with Alain De Cadenet who did not refuse. Harlan will continue to pursue Alain as a possible speaker. Jack Rugh and Bob Lubran both know PJ O’Rourke from college. PJ is currently ill and fighting cancer, but is likely to be healthy again before the convention. Jack will continue to work towards PJ as a speaker. All agreed that speakers must be dynamic and that speeches at the banquet be limited to no more than 30 minutes, with a maximum of two speakers. Additional speakers may speak at other convention events.

l. Gimmick Rally – Sherry stated that she has been visiting the Frederick area to gain information to assist with a Gimmick Rally and will be happy to develop a fun event.

5. Alex sought a volunteer to assist with Vendors. Judy Letcher graciously volunteered to assist.

6. The meeting was adjourned at 9:40PM.

“”The 5th annual Frozen Nuts Rally will be held on New Years Day morning. This is a New

Years Day drive in the country, for those who have not been partying too heavily the night before, AND you get to drive your Alfa in winter.... We will meet in Potomac at the Starbucks, on the corner of River Road and Falls Road at about 9:00 and leave at 10:00. The route will consist of a two hour drive to a country inn in Middleburg for a leisurely lunch and social gathering. After lunch we will convoy back to Maryland and those who wish to make other plans are free to do so. Due to the increasing popularity of the event, things will be a little more formal this year. Pre-registration is recommended so that I can manage things better. Even if you think you might attend please contact me and I will get a registration form to you. I would like to have an idea of the number of attendees ahead of time so that the inn can give us a room. You must be a member of Octane Club to attend. This can be done on the day of the event but it will help speed things up if I have your details ahead of time and have your registration packet and route map ready for you. The cost is $25.00 per car. This helps cover the cost of club insurance. If you would like to attend please e mail me and I will send you a registration form. Please feel free to invite a responsible friend regardless of what they drive. DANGEROUS AND IRRESPONSIBLE DRIVING WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. IF YOU ENCOUNTER ANYBODY DRIVING IRRESPONSIBLY PLEASE LET ME KNOW. Go to www.octaneclub.com for more details, or call Dermot McDermott at 301 758 3341.

For some time I have been thinking that it would be really fun to have a club devoted to the appreciation of mechanical devices. This is one of those concepts that, like pornography, are very difficult to define but easy to recognize. Having appreciated machinery all my life I have recognized this characteristic in others and realize that the Alfa man can appreciate a Lotus and vice versa. While I do not know the etymology of the term "gearhead", it is interesting that the term "petrolhead" is used by the Brits and those of you who speak Italian probably know how they express it. Note from

the Editor: Somehow “TestaBenzina” dose not cut it…

With this philosophy in mind I am going to launch a new type of club this January. Octane Club is for those who can recognize it. A place where those who like fossil fuel powered vehicles can gather and mix together. To be honest I do not know if there is sufficient interest in such a community but I want to give it a shot. Clubs live and die based on member involvement and Octane Club is no different. It will have a strong social component and I hope to promote a number of diverse activities. I will not be issuing annual memberships as I do not know whether the club will succeed yet, and do not want to initiate any long term commitments. I do not wish or intend to affect peoples involvement in other clubs in any way. Because I want to promote social gatherings and have to have club insurance I will be charging a modest amount for each event. This is just the grim reality of things today. Please check out the website at www.octaneclub.com and let me know what you think. I would be interested in your comments and feedback. Ciao,

Dermot McDermott.
