2nd Annual FlomCowboy Christmas

December 11, 2004

The 2nd annual Cowboy Christmas will be held at the

Flom Hall on Saturday, December 11, 2004. Admission is

$5 for adults and $3 for kids 12 and under. Preschool free.

All proceeds donated to the Ronald McDonald House.

The day is filled with fun for the whole family.

Starting at 2 pm is a trail ride, be on TIME, which will

leave Jensen Cattle Company Headquarters. Teams are

welcome.

3-4:30 sleigh rides in Flom. 5-is the program. 6pm is a

potluck supper. 7 pm the stick horse rodeo starts. From 9-

12:30 is the dance with music provided by Dick Taylor of

Medora, ND and others.

There are door prizes, free dance lessons and can bring an

ornament to help decorate the tree.

Prizes will also be awarded to the Best Dressed Vintage

Gent and Lady to be judged by the audience at 10pm.

Special features- Photos with Santa or by the wagon.

Sponsored by Local Ranchers and Cowboys.

Beer and set-ups available after 8pm provided by the Flom

exchange. If you are bringing a younger

brother or sister please let Jennifer know so

the 4-H can purchase a item for them. The

recreation committee will have events for the

whole family to participate in.

Other months we will be meeting will be:

February, April/May: Road ditch cleaning

and picnic supper. June: Project tour,

September: The year in review local and

state fair participants. Oct/Nov.

Christmas Tree Safety TipsA fire on any day seems bad, but a fire on Christmas seems to be the worst. Some 300 Christmas trees

caught fire in one recent year, with electrical problems the most

common culprit. Here's how to keep your tree green and your presents

safe. 1. When you buy your tree, have

the vendor make a fresh cut an inch from the bottom; this will help the

tree drink. 2. If you buy your tree early and keep it outside, store it away from wind and sun, and keep the bottom

in a bucket of water. 3. Make sure your lights are safe.

If you need outdoor lights, make sure the ones you buy are meant for outdoor use. Make sure your lights carry certification from a

testing laboratory. 4. Don't use electric lights on a

metal tree. 5. Discard any strings of lights

that are frayed or broken. Christmas lights are cheap.

6. Unplug your Christmas tree before you leave or go to bed.

7. Don't buy a tree that is dry and dropping needles. To check for

freshness, loosely grip the end of a branch and pull your hand over it. Only a few needles should fall off.

8. Make sure your tree stand holds plenty of water, and don't let

it run out. 9. If your tree seems wobbly,

center it in the stand more securely and redo the bolts or screws. Of if

your tree stand is cheap, buy a larger, stronger one.

10. If you buy an artificial tree, make sure it is fire-retardant.

11. Keep your tree at least three feet from furnaces, radiators and

fireplaces. 12. try to position it near an outlet so that cords are not running long

Marion Arlen JohnsonCASCADE MONTANAMarion Arlen Johnson, 73, of Cascade, an Air Force veteran, died of natural causes Saturday at a care center in Clancy.Cremation has taken place under the direction of Helena Funeral Chapel. No services are planned at this time.Survivors include his wife, Nora Johnson of Cascade; daughters Sheree Jetter of Arvada, Colo., and Tami Boyd of The Woodlands, Texas; a son, Randy Davies of Summerset, Pa.; and stepsons Brian Dyson of Great Falls and Robert "Willie" Sloan of Craig.Marion was born Aug. 9, 1931, in Flom, Minn., where he was raised and educated. He served in the Air Force from 1950 to 1953, and was stationed at Sheppard AFB in Texas and Chanute in Illinois. Known as "Little John" by all his fellow workers, he worked in the missiles in Montana and South Dakota.He joined the Boilermakers Union Local 11 in 1965, working at many power and industries plants in the Northwest until retiring in 1991.Marion married Nora (Leet) Sloan in Cascade in 1993.He enjoyed fly-fishing on the Missouri River, restoring and working on his 1973 Volkswagen and his 1968 Porsche, and visiting New Mexico, Arizona, and Nevada in the winter.He was preceded in death by his mother, Elna.Memorials may be made to American Diabetes Association.Cards can be sent to:Mrs. Nora Johnson29 Front Street Box 248Cascade, MontanaSubmitted

6The Wiry, Little Norwegian Wood Cutter (Ole Rikhus)

by Kay Adele Buri, 004 Whispers From the Prairie Ole Rikhus, the tiny, wiry gentle man, who lived on the south side of the tracks, in an

equally tiny, one room house, located just east of my grandparents home. Norwegian was his native tongue and he loved to come to visit with my Mother who was fluent in Icelandic, the true old Norse, as she understood Norwegian, so they were able to visit. They would sit at the table, enjoying coffee, Ole using cream in the wonderful social

brew, as I recall. He would walk up to our house, with an ax over his shoulder, wearing his bib overalls with the blue and white tiny stripes, arriving to chop some kindling for my mothers cook stove which sat stately on the north wall of our kitchen. Ole knew better than anyone else, how to make wonderful kindling, which in turn would make my Mom’s job of cooking so much easier, as he would keep the sticks the same length, always of a size which easily fit into the stove without taking off more than one lid. This in turn helped to keep my Mother’s kitchen clean, and without any more soot than was necessary. He would sort the “hot woods” from the “cooler woods” meaning those which could heat the stove quickly

throwing off intense heat to those which burned but gave off little btu’s. My folks would invite him to chop wood, a little at a time, rather than a large quantity, as this gave them the opportunity to offer him a few more dinners and suppers, and lots more

cups of coffee, which he so loved. When Ole finished chopping the wood or needed to have a break from the work, Mom would always invite Ole into the house for coffee and visiting. They would have such a wonderful visit, and my Mom would always make sure the visit would last long enough, enabling the time to pass so the clock would indicate it was getting close to mealtime,

that way he would be invited, to stay for dinner or supper as the case might be. Ole lived alone, and had no conveniences in his home. This special man lived with the most meager of worldly possession of any person I had ever known growing up or have ever seen since. My Mother always made sure he not only got to eat the meal but there was always a package sent with him as he left the house, heading back with his ax on his shoulder and a package of goodies in his hand stopping at our store to receive payment

from my Dad enroute to his home. Most of all, Ole had the most incredible twinkling eyes I have ever seen as a child or have ever seen since. He always reminded me of a little elf. He was so tiny in stature, so thin, having snow white hair and a white full beard, but then there were those wonderful twinkling, dancing eyes!!!!!!! His face would often be covered with soot as his house was heated by a stove located sat at one end of his house, and he used coal and wood to heat. The coal would issue soot and Ole had no running water, as a matter of fact, the only water available to him was about a quarter of a mile away. Winter did not allow him to get that much water, and I remember during the very cold winters and storms during the latter 1940’s my Father and I would always walk down to check on Ole, and all the other

elder members of our town. Ole would be often sitting very close to his tiny stove, the inside of the house black with soot, and dark as a coal mine, his little kerosene glass mantled lantern burning on the table, but there was nothing light colored in the house from which the light could reflect……….but for one……..Ole’s dancing white eyes and I can still see it in my mind’s eye. You could hardly make out his tiny body outline against the sooty interior, but you knew where he was by looking for his eyes, white and dancing, and his almost white

mustache and beard under which there was always a smile. We would visit for a short while, deliver the cookies or goodies my Mother always sent, and see that Ole had enough coal or wood inside the house to last the night before we left to go on to the next elder on our route. Ole was a subject of a sculpture my Father made when he did miniature sculptures of people who lived in my home town. Ole’s sculpture was of course, a little man, with an ax over his shoulder, but the metal didn’t allow my Dad to capture his wonderful, twinkling, dancing eyes! Those you will have to conjure up

in your mind’s eye!

Editor’s Note: Ole Rikhus was born in Sor Fron, Oppland Norway in 1874. He came to America with his parents. His parents are buried in Aspelund Lutheran Church Cemetery and are Anders & Karrie (Olsdatter) Rikhus. His brother Anton is also buried there. His sister Johanne married a Benson and his sister Lina married a Burgerson. He is buried at Balfour, North Dakota.
