    THEKNOWNHISTORY OFAL-GARVEY

It was not until the time of Unified Powers (FIC12-18) that the nation of Al-Garvey became fully immersed inthe Mordredian Wars. Before this the Goblin realm had felt the reverberations of the titanic changes that the 4thAge of Valon had brought to the continent of Urop only indirectly and through a series of small border wars andcommitments to foreign armies.

At the end of the Darke Age the Goblin Principalities as the embattled walled towns that would become Al-

Garvey were then called were in a poor state. Years of armies marching over their lands and the ravages of theferocious Dracci had spent the strength of the Goblins and it really was only with the Annulment of WyldeMagicke that they were saved.

As the Magicke dissipated the spells andtalismans of the Goblin warlords began to failand the captive Djinns and Wyverns alongwith all the other roaming monsters fadedfrom existence; panic spread. This panic was

unfounded however as the leaving of Wylde

Magicke, in the aftermath of Mordred seizingthe Power Ring, the eternal wars of the DarkeAge ended.

The Dracci fled from Urop and from the

Power Ring, their partially Magicke livesfailing, and the Elves of the Crystal Empire

marched homewards, away from the lands ofthe Goblins and turn their attention to theCivil War that was brewing in the ailingCrystal Empire. Taking deep breaths and for

the first time in most living memories thegrass grew in the pastures and birdsong filled

the air. Peace had returned, but not for long.

As the Civil War in the Crystal Empire grewand the secret of Blackpowder and the

Flintloque began to escape the confines ofLyonesse and Mordreds artisans and savants

changes began to occur in the Goblins much larger and richer neighbours in Catalucia. The now Dark Elvesthere were being overtaken by a cloud of darkness and abandoned the forests and their old ways. Still it was nopressing concern for the Goblins who in an act of co-operation forged a new nation under one ruler, this wouldbe the country of Al-Garvey ruled from Lisabone the seat of the most powerful warlords the Bragginzas. Maria

the now Queen of Al-Garvey (who became head of the Bragginzas after a number of accidents removed herfather, bother and two cousins from potential kingship) began a long series of

reforms most of which were optimistic rather than practical.

Al-Garvey built ships and took to the seas founding a large if ramshackleempire with colonies in Afri and near Inji as well and watched from adistance as the Elven Civil War shifted into a full Ferach Revolution. Thearmed forces of Al-Garvey remained locked in the Darke Age, true they had

muskets of a rough kind but little training in how to use them against anenemy who also possessed Blackpowder. Separated from the rest of Urop bymountains and being a small remote fish in a big pond allowed Al-Garvey tocontinue with trade and lazy isolation with the vicious sport of Podobecoming the national pastime.

Things might have remained like this were it not for the designs that the DarkElves of Catalucia held for the Goblin Kingdom and while the larger nations

of Valon began to stir and take notice of the threat that the now FerachEmpire posed to them the Dark Elves attacked their smaller neighbours.

    THEWAR OF THE ORUNG

Knowing that many of Al-Garveys best troops and commanders were far away fighting as allies of the AlbionOrcs in the Severed Ears War, or policing their scattered and ramshackle empire the Generals of Cataluciahatched a plot to destroy Al-Garvey. While the Severed Ears war raged faraway the lands of Catalucia and Al-Garvey were peaceful and to a large extent contented, with Al-Garvey especially the worst of the FerachRevolution passed them by. On the very eve of peace in the Severed Ears conflict and while Mordred encircled

his brother Marlass in the costal Armorican city of Tolonge the followers of the dark god Cernunnos withclandestine Ferach Elf assistance readied an army to invade.

Unknown even to Fernando the king of the Dark Elves the agents of Cernunnos controlled the CatatonicInquisition who in turn held sway over the commanders of a large portion of the Catalucian Army especially inSouthern Catalucia which was far from Mudrid and the influence of the King. This assembled Dark Elf armywaited on the border while agents of the Inquisition posing as ministers of Fernandos government proceeded toLisabone and made demands on Queen Maria of the Goblins.

These disguised agents of the Inquisition with an agenda set partly with their own greed for plunder and territoryand also Ferach pressure to annex potential allies of Albion made outrageous demands of the Queen. Maria satand listened as a treaty was outlined that would mean the loss of almost half of Al-Garveys lands and all of herborder fortresses and treasure. She listened as tales of huge numbers of Dark Elf soldiers, cavalry and artillerywho happened to be exercising on her borders might well take action if the treaty was refused. For several

hours she listened and when the Dark Elves finally fell silent she asked them to await her response in the antechamber attaching to the throne room.

Confident of success the agents of the Inquisition began to talk of which of the many paintings on thesurrounding walls would look good in their own villas when the doors to the chamber opened and two sectionsof the Guarda Royale with the Queen in their midst pistol in one hand and a glove puppet in the other.

Explaining to the now terrified Dark Elves that she had conferred with her chief military advisor Mr Foggy and, while speaking with a mock Todoroni accent and making the puppets head bob up and down, she declared that

the sovereign state of Al-Garvey would kneel to no one. She advanced to the closest Dark Elf and while keepingher pistol pressed to his groin she had Mr Froggy reach into her dress and pull out a large Orung, a soft fruitcommon to all regions of Al-Garvey, and told him to take it back to his King. This the Dark Elf did, though dueto the manner in which the Queen gave it to him he walked in a most peculiar fashion from the palace. So

began the War of the Orung.

The short war which followed was a frank demonstration inmilitary ineptitude on both sides, the Dark Elf invasion forcefought a brief and costly but successful siege atElveasandmarched on into the hills and down the dirt tracks of Al-

Garvey. The Goblin Army fought back and casualtiesmounted on both sides as march and counter march led

regiments into blind valleys and in some cases firing on

themselves. Both armies lacked experience and skill, theirprimitive muskets prone to misfire and artillery crewssometimes unable to fathom the drill to load their pieces. This was an amateur war, but a vicious one with neither sidelacking in courage.

Small battalion engagements and a few larger battles, mostnotably at Olivioaswhere the Goblins gave the Catalucians abloody nose, turned the tide in favour of the smaller GoblinArmy who with the help of the peasant population grounddown the Dark Elves. At was at this point that the up to that

stage Ferach clandestine assistance turned into open support.Ten regular Ferach regiments and their support marched through Catalucia under treaty protection and quickly

the superior Ferach musketry, drill and manoeuvre drove the Goblins back.

Under duress Queen Maria signed a negotiated surrender a month later and the Ferach and Dark Elf forceswithdrew. This was due more to Mordreds campaign in Aegypt needing more soldiers and the continuing

breakdown of the Catalucian junta or government (their troops had not been paid or supplied for three months)than to military success. There was remarkably little hostility between the two nations, both felt they had wonand both felt they would win again when the next conflict came, as it most surely must.

    THE COMING OF THEFERACH

Neither the Dark Elves or the Goblins learned anything usful from the War of the Orung and despite obviouswarning signs both were astounded when a conquest crazed Mordred turned the full military attention of theFerach Empire to the task of annexing Catalucia.

When little more then a year later Mordred began to invade Catalucia, his success alarmed the Goblins, whoknew that they would be next on the Elven agenda of conquest. In order to keep the Elves away from Al-Garvey, the Goblins decided to fight alongside the Dark Elves of Catalucia. The general idea behind this planwas that their homeland would then not suffer the ravages of war, and this they achieved. However, their Armysuffered mauling after mauling at the hand of the Elves, and soon, the outlook became very bleak.

There were many, many reasons behind the early defeats of the Goblins, the main one being their hopelessArmy. Badly led and poorly disciplined, the Goblins were unenthusiastic fighters, even though they werefighting to preserve their homeland. No one was willing to do anything about the poor state of the armed forces. Before the Reform of the Al-Garvey army discipline was appalling, officers were corrupt and cowardly themajority of recruits were sickly and weak and random shootings were common.

The Goblin monarch, Queen Maria, was by now mischievously insane, spending more time concocting wild

fantasies of Goblinoid supremacy than administering to her country. Her son, the suave Don Jon was the realpower behind the throne, and he performed most of the diplomatic and political duties that should have beencarried out by his mother.

As victory in the war against Mordred looked more and more unlikely, Queen Maria

decided to go on a short overseas expedition to soothe her nerves. Don Jon set up aCouncil of Regency to rule Al-Garvey in her place, and the wily diplomat invited theQueens new allies to assist him in running the warring country. Two very capable Orcs,William Beresforc and Sir John Steworc brought their knowledge and experience to the

Council, and set in motion a series of reforms that rejuvenated the lacklustre GoblinArmy. Replacing the old Officers with Orcs and promoting more capable Goblins to the

higher ranks, the Army dramatically changed within the space of a few months. By thetime the small, but iron hard and professional, Orcish Army under Surjon Moore wasforced out of Catalucia atKooruna, the Goblin Army was a force capable of standing onits own dirty green feet.

As the Ferach war machine rolled onwards into Al-Garvey it captured and burned town after town it seemed as if

Wheeling-Turns early victories over the Elves in Al-Garvey at VileairoandRetchicawould be for nothing asthe huge number of Elvish soldiers and their allies would sweep them right into the sea. This was not to behowever as the genius of Wheeling-Turn had seen fit to make the labour of tens of thousands of Goblins create,as a barrier to approaching Lisabone, the fortifications and earthworks of theLines of Tornbleedraz. TheseLines named after the casualties incurred in creating them stooped the Elves and they wasted many monthstrying to break through but being repulsed each time they tried. Behind the Lines the Orcs brought more troops

ashore and readied themselves to push the Ferach from Al-Garvey. Eventually the Elves were forced to retreatfrom a lack of food and other shortages and as they went they were harassed all the way by the Orcs and theGoblins;Koorunawas revenged in Armorican blood.

When Wheeling-Turn launched the second invasion of Ferach-held Catalucia, the Goblins were ready andwilling to fight alongside his troops. From theLines of Tornbleedrazhe marched his Army through Al-Garvey,

adding many Regiments of Goblins to his banner as he travelled. When the Elves under Marshal Sault decidedto cross the border and attack Noportoe and Lisabone (the bases of the ruling Council of Regency), Wheeling-Turn and his Goblinoid allies were ready for them.

Led by the fanatical Bishop of Noportoe who provided information to the Allied Army and leadership to thelocal Goblin troops the Battle ofNoportoesaw the Goblins and their Orc allies inflict an embarrassing defeat onthe Ferach. The Goblins proved to all of Valon that they were ready, willing and more than able to fight against

Mordred as part of the wider Grand Alliance.

Once the laughing stock of the Unified Powers, the Goblin Army was now a force to be reckoned with in theMordredian Wars.

AN ALLIANCE WITH THE ORCS OFALBION

The massive reorganisation of the armed forces of Al-Garvey has greatly increased the fighting ability of thetypical Goblin soldiery. Better training performed by Orc and Rat drill sergeants in musketry practise, marchingand all aspects of supply have allowed the once lack lustre Goblin Line battalions to form a valuable part of the

    battle array of the allies.

An emphasis on five key areas had made the Army of Al-Garvey much more effective.

Firstly to remove and then retrain the office core of the Army in modern warfare, this has allowed battalions thatalthough quite good were ineptly led by a foppish dandy to be able to punch their weight against Elven columns.

They are not as proficient as Orcish officers but then nobody loves war as much as Orcs.

Secondly the natural fondness of the Goblins for artillery has led to great investment in many middle calibre ironand even brass cannons which have been imported from the great foundries of Londinium. With well trainedcapable crews these lighter guns pulled by hardy limber lizards these guns are put in to a battery to supportGoblin Divisions or mix Divisions and often pound Ferach regiments hard enough to break them.

Thirdly the recruitment of a large number of overstrength battalions of Terzo Auxiliares or regular militiafrom all over Al-Garvey has bolstered garrisons andports and importantly allowed the majority of the army to

fight at the fronts knowing that their backs are at leastcovered by some of the steadiest militia on Valon.

Fourthly an ancient law enshrined in the stone tablets ofGoblin law has been used to raise a potentially enormousfighting force called the Ordenanze. Each and every

single able bodied Goblin in each region of Al-Garveymust bring any weapons they possess and report for

annual training. These large and poorly trained forceshave been used to plug gaps and have even, throughsheer weight, been known to slow down superior enemies long enough for better troops to get the advantage.

Lastly cavalry, once a rare sight in the ranks of Goblin armies, has been improved and expanded greatly with twotypes of mounts being used. These being the Lizard and the traditional Goblin mount the Dodo. These

squadrons of Dragoons support and harass as the need arises. The real punch of the Al-Garvey cavalry isprovided by the smaller numbers of Heavy Lizard riders who are the finest cavalry the Mad Queen possesses.

When you combine this with the Al-Garvey penchantfor invention and knack for exotic sciences whichhave led to the introduction of both the Carcass Dodo

and the Telegraph Corps the Goblins have anexcellent army which works very well in tandem withthe Army of Albion and her redcoats.

The Carcass Dodo ends up just as its name suggests,a Dodo with a barrel of Black Powder roped to its

back, this animal is persuaded to charge the enemyand then detonate in their ranks. The TelegraphCorps uses flags and pullies to send messages far, farfaster than any horse could gallop.

    THEAL-GARVEYARMY ENTERS CATALUCIA

It was with confidence in their cause but with a lot of fraying nerves that the first battalions of Al-Garvey footsoldiers marched silently across the border into the battle grounds of Southern Catalucia. Musketry and artilleryhad been flashing up and down the border for weeks beforehand as the Orcs of Wheeling-Turn pushed the Elvesback and laid siege to Badjobz the mighty fortress town that guarded the way towards Tarrenvera and the

    flatlands.

As the fighting intensified around the massive walls of Badjobzand the Orcs had sat stoically down in theirtrenches that ringed the fortress the Goblins performed an active role in harassing the Ferach. More than seventhousand Al-Garvey soldiers, largely under their own command fought running battles with the Elves andassisted by irregular Catalucian bandits and guerrilla fighters they held them at bay while the Orcs battered

    Badjobzinto submission.

The fortress had changed hands a number of times over thecourse of the Mordredian Wars but as all generals knew to holdthe fortress was vital to the invasion of Catalucia. As the Orcsdid this the Goblins with the able Beresforc and Steworc at theirfore and a number of experienced Orc and Joccian officers in

their midst fought atSenilliaand at Casa de Salivatiaalong withEzmerentes where they were at times outclassed but neverbeaten.

Casualties among the Goblins were manageable and when thefortress ofBadjobzfell to the Army of Albion much of the glory

went to the protective actions of the often inexperienced Goblins. These actions had allowed the siege works and the eventualbreach to be carried out without harassment and the garrison tobe worn down without relief.

Wheeling-Turn informed Londinium and the government there of

these acts of bravery on the part of the Al-Garvey soldiers andwhen time allowed he organised a parade and the giving ofmedals. Along with these decorations Wheeling-Turn gave theonce wretched troops of the Mad Queen his own personal praise:

y Sentinel these gobbies are the scrapping

    cockerels of the whole army

    - Lord Wheeling-Turn.

The war in Catalucia continues and the thin red line of Albion would find it very difficult to be able to makeheadway if not for the now vindicated and seasoned troops of Al-Garvey. Ferach forces have learned now not todiscount their enemies if they see ranks of shorter Goblins rather than Orcs. This lesson they have learned oncountless battlefields and lesser encounters from Lisabone to the heartlands of Catalucia.

It may be a long time before the Tyrant Mordred is toppled from his bloody throne and the stain of Armorican

presence is wiped from the burned and ravaged lands of Catalucia but even now the ports of Lisabone bustle andcrops grow in fields across Al-Garvey where roads have been re-laid and bridges re-built.

The realm of the Goblins is recovering from the pall of occupation and exploitation that covered it and theirdesire for vengeance against those who tried to enslave them grows with it. Wherever an Orc fights an Elf he

will have a Goblin by his side.

    THEFIELDEDARMY OFAL-GARVEY

As the reformed Goblin Army is still fairly new there are few Goblins of renown, and they usually fightalongside the Orcs under Orc Generals and C-in-Cs. However, they do act as Unit Officers and have some

higher raking commanders of their own. There is now even an independent Al-Garvey corps operating inCatalucia though it stays close to and is under the direction of Wheeling-Turn.

The Al-Garvey army is long changed since the time of Annul and the Ferach Revolution, its enemies found itthen an easy opponent but now things are much changed. While often part of larger Albion formations theGoblins do field divisions of their own. Their light troops are very good as are their better regular battalions, their cavalry are mounted on different species of riding Lizards and the increasing rare fighting Dodos. FewGoblin troops are found outside of Al-Garvey and Catalucia though some, as a token gesture, accompanied the

Albion Expedition to the Witchlands and also to Aegypt.

Following is an account of the troop types in the Army of Al-Garvey during the Grand Alliance period of theMordredian Wars (FIC Year 23 to FIC Year 28) which matches and expands on the statistics and rules inSlaughterloo 2ndEdition and Flintloque. Units not included in Slaughterloo 2ndEdition are marked (*).

AL-GARVEY LINE INFANTRYInitially ridiculed by Mordreds troops, the Goblins of Al-Garvey are now a dangerous force in the Alliancearsenal. Prior to the reforms that Albion instigated, the Goblin Army was a hopeless collection of poorly-paidsoldiers and incompetent Officers, unfit for any attempt at war. However, when William Beresforc and John

Steworc took control of the situation, they introduced far-reaching reforms that over time turned the GoblinArmy from being a laughing stock to a powerful tool in the fight against Mordred. Playing a huge part in the warin Catalucia, the Goblin Line Infantry are among Wheeling-Turns most reliable troops, and what the Goblinsmay lack in stature, they more than make up for in sheer courage and determination.

doomed last reserve of Al-Garvey. Each province raises its own Terzo and outfits them as best they can, somefar better than others. The Albion re-organisation of the Goblin army has led to many of the most incompetentofficers of Al-Garvey to seek commissions in the lesser forces of the realm. Many other soldiers mock the Terzofor their unusual uniforms, the civilian style of their hats and shoes combined with the normal shade ofyellowing brown on their breeches and jackets has led the Orcs to call them Slops. THE 4TH AL-GARVEY DRAGOONSThe trials and sufferings of the Goblin kingdom of Al-Garvey firstly at the hands of the soldiers of the DarkElves of Catalucia and then by the far superior troops of the Ferach tyrant Mordred brought much destruction tothe small country. While the backward Goblin militia of the old regime were just about able to defend their

borders against the often-inept attempts at invasion of the gaudy Dark Elves they were swept aside by the rapid

marches of the Armorican Elves in their blue uniforms. Had it not been for more pressing matters in Ostaria andthen in the deep freeze of the Witchlands then the regiments of the Ferach Arme might well have destroyedAlbions greatest ally. While the Infantry of Al-Garvey benefited greatly from the invigorating reforms ofBeresforc and Steworc, the Cavalry of the mad Queen only benefited by a lesser extent. A shortage of lizards, the preferred mount of the Regency, created morale and training problems. Queen Maria the somewhat unstable

monarch of Al-Garvey, on the military advice of Mr Froggy her sock puppet, used the royal decree and her fiststo retain the ancient and noble mount of her forebears; the Dodo. Though numbers of these odd flightless birds

are steeply on the decline, indeed a visiting scientist Mr Durwinorc has foreseen their extinction there are enoughfor the moment to go round. So the palace Royal Cavalry and the mounted members of Al-Garveys engineersand signal Goblins along with a few regiments of cavalry such as the infamous 4th Dragoons fromMucklumburk, a rough tough bunch of green sods as the Orcs call them, all use the Dodo as a mount. This

large bird is slower than many other mounts but it has a better nature and is easier to keep healthy in the sparsemountains of the Catalucian border. Better still when dispatched by an enemy musket ball many Goblins,

especially in the 4th Dragoons, find themselves offered all kinds of bribes in exchange for the carcass of theirgiant chicken.

STATUSThe Dragoons are classed as Light Cavalry.

UNIFORMThe uniform consists of a dark blue tunic, grey breeches, black shako and black shoes. Facing colours and

epaulettes (cuffs, collars, etc.) are red. Equipment is black, with equipment straps being of white leather.

GOBLIN HEAVY CAVALRYThe changes in the Al-Garvey Army affected the giant Lizard riding Goblin Heavy Cavalry much more thantheir Light Lizard Cavalry counterparts, creating a force capable of holding their own. However, there is still alack of lan among the Units, which is reflected by their lower than normal Morale.

THE CARCASS DODOS *A unique Goblin weapon the guided chicken missile is touted as an intelligent artillery shell. Though how intelligent anyDodo which allows a bomb to be strapped to it and then runs smoking into the midst of the enemy before exploding in a

shower of flame and iron fragments can be debated.

In battle a group of 6 Dodos, and a crew of 4 handlers (2 pushers, lighter and Unit Officer miniatures armed with muskets)forms a Unit of Bomber Dodos. This Unit moves as Skirmishing Cavalry (due to the Dodos) with regard to Difficult terrain

and has a Movement Rate of 15cm (Charge Bonus CB 5cm for roads etc).

When activated the Unit may attack by dispatching a single Bomber Dodo towards the enemy. This is the equivalent of a FireAction for the Unit. The Dodo must be dispatched towards a declared target Unit (this cannot be Generals or C-In-Cs) which

is within LOS of the Bomber Unit at the time of dispatch. The Dodo will move again in its next activation towards its target,it has an unlimited range.

    BOMBS AWAY!

A dispatched Dodo must then make an immediate Dodo movement roll (2D6) to see how fast it moves and how well itfollows its training! A dispatched Dodo will have a very variable Movement Rate and may be subject to some strange

    interpretations to its training!

Each turn a Dodo will generate a movement rate equal to the sum of the 2D6 roll multiplied by 5cm i.e. if you roll a 3 and 5,the Dodo will move 8 x 5cm, or 40cm total. Once dispatched a Dodo will not enter ANY Difficult Ground, but will cross

over Rough Going Obstacles and incurring a movement penalty of 15cm. If the 2D6 was also a double roll then consult theDouble Trouble Dodo Bomber Table to see how the Dodo has observed its basic training. The training result will take effectBEFORE any movement is taken.

    DOUBLE TROUBLE

    DODO BOMBER TABLE

    DOUBLEROLLED

    TRAINING RESULT

1 & 1 Whoops: The Dodo has lost grip on its retaining rope and has prematurely off loaded its bombs after movement the Dodo

lets go its explosive cargo. Resolve explosion as normal immediately after movement.

2 &2 Return to sender: The Dodo has become confused amid the chaos of the battlefield and decides to return to its masters. TheDodo will turn around and move back towards its own Unit. If it rejoins its Unit (touches base) then the Bomber Unit must

make an Immediate Form Roll (base target Number of 8) to defuse its dangerous cargo. If this roll fails then it goes BOOM!

3 & 3 Target lost: The Dodo becomes confused and has lost track of its current target. But it uses its own initiative (!) and picks anew target Unit. The Dodo will select a new target Unit (allied or enemy) which is the closest Unit to the Dodo in a randomlychosen direction.

4 & 4 Lock on left: Dodo loses direction slightly and will now target the nearest Unit to the LEFT of the original declared target

    Unit.

5 & 5 Lock on right: Dodo loses direction slightly and will now target the nearest Unit to the RIGHT of the original declared targetUnit.

6 & 6 Direct strike! The Dodo is moving at full flap with great precision. If it makes contact with the target Unit this move then itwill have executed a textbook bombing hit. Unlike a normal hit, do not place the howitzer template at the point of contact, but

move it over the target Unit enough so as to maximise number of enemy miniatures underneath. In addition, due to theincreased lethality of the deep strike explosion, roll 4D6 to generate Attack Points.

    BOOM!

When the Dodo contacts a Unit it will off load its explosive cargo into the midst of the enemy ranks. Results can be

    extremely variable...

To resolve the bombing attack place the centre of a Howitzer template at the point of contact with the target Unit. This willdetermine potential casualties as normal. Next generate the explosion effect: roll 2D6 for the To Hit score total (minus target

DF value and modifiers for cover) and 3D6 for the Attack Points total. Finally calculate any wounds and casualties as normalon the Firing Kill Table. Dodo bombing attacks cannot effect Units in buildings but may effect Units behind cover as normal

.i.e. Unit gains Cover Bonus. A Dodo Bomb attack counts as Artillery on Moral Check table.

    UNSETTLING TO BE NEAR

ANY Unit within 20cm of a Bomber Dodo Unit suffers an automatic -1 to its Form value (would you want to be that close!).

This effect is in addition to the -1 Form Roll conditional modifier for being within 15cm of enemy and affects allied units aswell.

    TAKE THAT DODO DOWN!

The Dodo may be targeted as normal with a Sniper Card. Any Unit armed with muskets or rifles (Infantry only) that Unit

may attack the Dodo once it is within 20cm of them. This is treated like a normal attack roll. The Dodos DF is 2 and is -3 ToHit due to its unpredictable movements. For each Wound inflicted roll a D6. Any result of 6 means the Dodo has been taken

down and explodes immediately at that point. Any other result just caused the Dodo to lose a few feathers in the air!

Additionally, the Bomber Dodo Unit itself may be attacked as normal, and receives a -2 to Hit due to its small open order

arrangement. Any Wounds inflicted may hit crew or Dodos. Roll a D6 for each Wound:

1-2 Crew member is hit3-5 Dodo is hit

6 Dodo is hit and it explodes, treat subsequent explosions as normal.

For the purposes of Officer kill Checks and casualty Moral Checks only loss of crew are considered not any dead Dodos.

STATUS & ARMAMENTThe Bomber Dodo are classed as a Special Unit.

UNIFORMThe Handlers wear an assortment of leather and hopefully fire retardant clothing in many colours. Not that ithelps them!

AL-GARVEY TELEGRAPH CORPS *Much like the Orcs of Albion and the Rats of Joccia the craftsmen of Al-Garvey are very nimble with theirfingers. However unlike the Orcs and Joccians the Goblins are better at copying than inventing and the

Telegraph Corps is a prime example of this knack. Taking plans drawn up by the Royul Navye and with theirhelp of their officers the Army of Al-Garvey has added a unique device to its arsenal.

The wooden signal towers with their flags are the constructs of the Telegraph Corps and are capable of sendingimportant if not normally vital messages over long distances in a very short span of time. This is done by amessenger who relays a message to the officer of the tower who then turns the message into a series of flags,

these flags are then raised and lowered transmitting the message. The next tower up to several miles away picksup the signals and passes them along the line. This line of towers can stretch further than the fastest horse couldgallop in a day. In battle the towers can replay commands to troops at shorter distances making control ofbattalions much easier. This tends to make the cumbersome and immobile towers targets to the enemy however!

    SHOWING THE RED FLAG

A Telegraph Station Unit is a Special Unit and consists of 1 Unit Officer, 1 flag equipped signalman, 2 assembly crew and 1

wooden platform. All crew are armed with muskets. The Telegraph Station can assist greatly a General in the command andcontrol of an Armys manoeuvres on the battlefield. Each Telegraph Station is always assigned to a particular Division. A

Division may have more than 1 Telegraph Station. Also they take time to construct and are always deployed before a battlebegins. Once deployed the station cannot be moved during a battle.

Any time a Unit is within LOS and 60cm of a Telegraph Station it will receive a special bonus to its Form value of +2 (this is

effect the equivalent of a Clear Orders General Order Card). This is in addition to any Order cards in play but is notcumulative with more than 1 Telegraph Station.

Telegraph Stations can work together to create a very useful line of communication for the relaying of Orders by an Armies

commanders. If a Telegraph Station is within 60cm of another Telegraph Station then they can send and receive messages toeach other. Several Telegraph Stations can thus link up to form a Communication line down the whole length of a battlefield.

If a C-in-C moves within 45 cm of a Telegraph Station during a command Phase he may send his Order Cards for his

Generals from one Telegraph Station to another in an instant. Any General who moves to within 45cm of a Telegraph Stationmay subsequently receive his Order Cards as if within Command Range of his C-in-C. Similarly, any General within 45cm

of a Telegraph Station can issue his General Order Cards as normal to any of his Units if they are within 60 cm of anyTelegraph Station.

However, sometimes the signals can get misinterpreted and confused. For each Order Card roll a number of D6 equal to thenumber of Telegraph Stations which relayed the Order. If any D6 rolls a 6 the Order was lost in translation and the receiving

Unit must make an immediate Form Roll at a base target number of 8. If the station crew are reduced to 2 or less thenmessages may be lost in translation on a 5 or 6 instead.

Telegraph Stations may be attacked as normal by musket, cannon and melee (even by Cavalry). The Platform will grant the

station crew a +1 DF Hard Cover bonus (Advanced Game: 18 Archy Points) against any attacks (and will confer the bonusesof a Square formation if engaged by Cavalry. It counts as Unlimbered Artillery against any firing attacks (-2 To Hit). Whilst

the station crew are tangled up in a melee or if all the station crew are killed the platform can no longer relay messages.

STATUS &ARMAMENTThe Goblin Telegraph Corps is classed as a Special Unit.

UNIFORMThe uniform consists of a sky blue tunic, dark blue breeches and black shoes. Facing colours are purple andbraiding is gold. Equipment is black and equipment straps are black leather.

    ADVANCED GAME

In the Advanced Game if a General is within 45cm of a Telegraph Station he will receive a bonus of

15cm to all his Command Ranges for the purpose of issuing General Order cards from the Telegraph

Station during the whole of a Turn of Battle.

    THENOTABLES,PEOPLES AND CREATURES OFAL-GARVEY

Al-Garvey is a small country with a small population separated by wide rivers and high mountains which makethe few areas of broad flat land very valuable for farming and other purposes. It is hot in the summer and while

wet and cold in the winter months, up in the mountains it can be as cold as the milder parts of the tundra driven

    Witchlands.

There are only two large cities in Al-Garvey these being Lisabone and Noportoeof the two of them Lisabone is the capital and by far the larger. From Lisabone anetwork of mainly dirt track roads leads away winding all over the country to the

boarders with Catalucia. Apart from the sea the only neighbours the Goblinshave are the Dark Elves of Southern Catalucia and the borders with this countryare difficult due to the mountains and the several large fortresses that guard thetracks on both sides of the border. Of these fortresses, on the Al-Garvey side, the most powerful is Elveas that has a garrison of many thousands and has beenthe scene of many battles and sieges.

The normal inhabitant of Al-Garvey is a Goblin, being a remote nation there are

few foreigners though the massed armies of the Ferach invaders and the Army ofAlbion have altered this to an extent. Standing roughly 1.3 metres in height withan average weight of some 45 kilograms the Al-Garvey Goblin is a wiry and strong character he has skin thatranges from green to mottled brown and even in some cases pale flesh dependent on his environment. CommonGoblins speak the native Algarven tongue but educated Goblins often know Orcish or Elvish tongues as well as

in some cases Dog and Todoroni languages.

Animals common to Catalucia and to Armorica can be found in Al-Garvey though they tend to be smaller andweaker due to the climate. There are two animals though that are unique to Al-Garvey, these are the ridingLizard and the riding Dodo. Riding Lizards come in two different sizes, small and large, the smaller being muchmore common. Standing between 1.8 and 3 metres in height and weighing 100 to 300 kg they are capable of

doing some damage if ridden aggressively in battle, many horses are quite scared by these creatures and theirodd reptile odor. Lizards are bred in the costal regions of the country and supply the nation with not only many

thousands of cavalry mounts but also an animal capable of trotting miles without a rest while ploughing fields ordragging wagons.

The Dodo is a marvellous creature that is sadly

becoming more rare due to casualties in battle but alsobeing hunted for its excellent meat, as is often said in

    Al-Garvey:

'Goblins love their Dodos, but they also love to eat

    them and to win battles.'

A savage creature when wild, the Dodo is a tough

fighter in its own right and was the mount of choice for

the ancient Iron Helm knights of the Dark Age in Al-Garvey. Standing on two legs and about 1.1 metres inheight and 60kilgrams in weight the Dodo has a sharp

beak and long claws that it can use to great effect on itsprey, these creatures are natural carnivores and in

packs are capable of destroying even the mightiestanimals such as Rhinos.

There are many officers and adventurers of note and reknown in Al-Garvey here is information on a few ofthem:

THE BISHOP OF NOPORTOE (SPECIAL UNIT OFFICER)(45POINTS) (53004)The Al-Garvey city of Noportoe is the seat of the Goblin Regency and the placemost threatened by Marshall Saults invading columns. As a result the city has

become a vital place of resistance and a place where the forces of Al-Garvey have

been able to fight their own battles with the Ferach. An important figure in thecity is the Bishop, not only a Goblin of the Cloth, but also a leader of theresistance, even when the city was occupied by the Elves. He commands troopsof his own and pays for them with his own purse.

    MARCH WITH PRIDE!

Not known for their speed on the battlefield the Bishop of Noportoe sees Goblinsas a valuable asset for the Grand Alliance and urges them to rush to a fight. The

Bishop may command Goblin Line or Militia units and gives them a bonus of+10cm per Turn to their Line and Column movement.

MARSHAL WILLIAM BERESFORC (C-IN-C) (EXPERINCED) (185 POINTS) *

The national hero of the Goblins and second only to Maria in their affections (they respect rather than loveWheeling-Turn) this Bog Orc officer along with a handful of others reformed the army of Al-Garvey and gave

the Goblins back their pride. Beresforc is an Orc of great size and physical power and has served with the Armyof Albion since the earliest days of the Time of Annul. He learned his soldiering in the bloody siege of Tolongewhere he aided the doomed Prince Marlass with a small Orcish force again the troops of the Usurper Mordred.Though this mission was a failure it allowed Beresforc to gain a commission in Aegypt and then in several other

campaigns where he commanded Al-Garvey troops and learned their language. When the task of creating a newarmy out of the husk of the existing Goblin regiments was being given out by Palayment in Londinium he was

first in line for the job.

Beresforc is by any standards a professional soldier and leads by example, his face scarred and an eye destroyed,he is a Marshal of the Al-Garvey Army and a General in the Army of Albion though he never wears this uniform

and serves only with Goblin troops. When in battle the Marshal is distinctive mounted on his heavy lizard andtowering over the cheering Goblins which he leads into the fray.

    ON, ON, ON!

All Goblin Units within 90cm of the Marshall may add their Charge Bonus to their movement for free.STEADY GOBBIES STEADY!The presence of Beresforc on the battlefield is a very calming one for Goblins and as a result all Goblin Unitswithin 60cm of the Marshall may ignore the first two NEGATIVE points of modifiers to their Form for the turn.Meaning if the Units have a modifier to them that results in a -1 to Form they may ignore it, they may then

ignore another -1 to Form or a single -2 overall. They may NOT add to their Form rating and may not removemore than two points of negative modifier to Form per Turn. This affects all valid Goblin Units within 60cm.

MARQUIS OF ALGOBNA (GENERAL) (AVERAGE) (200 POINTS) *The once regal Marquis is now a renegade and traitor to his queen and his people, he commands the LegionDuende in the service of the Ferach and personally appointed by Mordred in Lyonesse. Though this Goblin

follows the fashions and philosophy of the Elves he is not as fine a general as he would like to think he is. Hisown Legionaries follow him willingly but some Elves are not keen on serving under his command. As a result

of this he normally commands the Legion and allied battalions from Finklestein or Nepolise.FREEDOM FOR AL-GARVEY!When commanding Units from the Ferach Goblin Legion (they must be all Goblin units in Ferach service) theseUnits gain a +1 to their Form and +1 to their Fire Mod if within 45cm of the General. Additionally any Ferach

Elf Unit (composed of Elves) in the Division COMMANDED by Algobna suffer a -1 to their Form if within45cm of the General.

    TACTICS OF GOBLINTROOPS INBATTLE

Here is a short introduction on how to fight a Slaughterloo Battle with your Goblin Army of Al-Garvey. This will not allowyou to win easily, as the game of Slaughterloo is about a subtle blend of tactics and timing along with some good dice rolls

than the possession of super powerful units and personalities. However if you are intending waging war with Goblins thenthis is a good place to begin.

General style of Play for Al-Garvey Divisions

In a game of Slaughterloo the generally accepted style of play for Goblin Divisions is defensive. Goblin Divisions are suitedto limited manoeuvre and advance and are excellent for holding ground or protecting the flanks of larger armies. They are a

secondary nation in terms of soldiery. When in battle players should attempt to overpower Divisions of weaker troops suchas Todoroni and Dwarves while leaving larger prey such as Ogres to others. When, and this is often the case, Goblin players

are battling against Ferach Elves they should avoid movement when it is not needed and try to use their cavalry and artillery

not their infantry as their offensive weapons.

Strong Spots in a Goblin Division

Goblins are not the most powerful of races in Slaughterloo but they do have several advantages over their enemies. Theseadvantages begin off the field of battle and are as follows:

Goblin Troops are all cheaper than average in points. You can have larger Units than Elf Players and othersmeaning a Division capable of taking more casualties and still fighting.

Goblins have DF (Defence Factor) equal to Elves and are capable of resisting as much punishment.

Goblins have good Morale Ratings and even their militia are harder to break than average.

Goblins have low Regard ratings which mean their Units contribute less to defeat when broken.

Goblin Cacadores (Light Infantry) are among the finest on Valon, use them!

Goblin Dodo Cavalry are cheap cavalry and are suitable for combating all but the best enemy cavalry.

Al-Garvey Heavy Cavalry are good value and provide a strong affordable punch for less points than similar Unitsin Elf and Confederation Dog Divisions as well as expensive Orc Lifeguard Cavalry.

Al-Garvey Artillery while slower than Elf is nearly as good in other areas and while not cheap is quite capable of

winning a battle. Goblin Line Artillery out performs Dark Elf and Dwarven similar Units.

    Infantry Tactics

When using Goblin Infantry Units you must remember that you cannot march as quickly as Elves or charge as far, and thatyou cannot march as quickly in Line formation as your allies. However you have solid troops as the bulk of your LineInfantry with good Form and Morale as well as excellent value for points. These troops should form the core of your division

and marched in column while being protected by cavalry. Bolster your regular Infantry with a Guarda Polissa Unit which iscapable of going toe to toe with any Elf or Dog or Dwarf Infantry Unit. Take advantage of cheap and tough militia to bulk up

your Division. Tactically you will want to avoid long advances and also open ground due to your lower speed, you will wantto protect your infantry with supporting arms such as light cavalry and artillery as your lower Form ratings may cause a rout

it caught on the march by the enemy. Goblin Infantry is dependable and reliable and best used defensively rather thanoffensively.

    Cavalry Tactics

The Al-Garvey Army is mainly infantry and artillery but it is with your cavalry that you can strike out against enemy

outposts and infantry. Your cavalry is as fast as the flashy Garde of the Elves, though not as powerful, but it is perfectlycapable of putting infantry and small Units to flight. Use them to protect your own troops as they manoeuvre and to makesudden strikes against advancing enemies, if possible artillery in limber and troops who have been disorganised by your own

    infantry volleys.

    Artillery Tactics

When putting together a Goblin Division you should include two to three cannons with full crew, this is perfectly possible

when you save points compared to an Elf or Dog player with your Units of Infantry and Cavalry. Use the Battery rules andmake them into one Unit, take medium cannon (Goblins are not suited to heavy and very heavy cannons) and this gives yourdivision a very powerful pool of long range firepower that a similar pointed Orc Division would not be able to afford. These

cannons should be used as normal, firstly to target enemy cannon to prevent them from hammering your own Units and thento knockout those enemy troops that most threaten you. For Al-Garvey Divisions this will likely be enemy light cavalry.

Place your cannon ideally on a hill and protect them with at least one Unit of Infantry if possible.

    Special Units and Characters Tactics

The Al-Garvey Army contains a number of unique Special Units and Characters. The Characters are well fashioned tocommand a Goblin Army or Division and have properties that enhance the ability of the Goblin soldier in terms of his

combat ability (see Notables and Top Brass in this article). You should make use of these characters and also those of theAlbion Orcs and Joccian Rats as your close allies. In terms of Special Units the Goblin Army can deploy the devastatingCarcass Dodos and make use of the Semaphore Corps which provide bonuses that no other army can take without having

    Goblins in their forces.
