In accordance with DIN ISO, we sinter blanks in the form of round bars, rectangular bars, bushings, rings, plates and formed parts made of the high performance materials tungsten carbide, tungsten–copper, heavy alloy, tungstenand molybdenum.

NHT also offers contract manufacturing of customized parts and produces semi-finished products or complete components accor-ding to customer specifications in any quantity from one-off production to large series – quickly, reliably and in top quality.

New in our range - GM25EDM and GM30EDMThe newly developed corrosion-protected EDM grades GM25EDM and GM30EDM - a consistent development of our proven classic GN30S. A special binder composition allows a longer stay in the dielectric medium. These grades have an extremely low susceptibility to corrosion. Both GRADES are characterised by a high-quality finish with less recutting. The result is a high level of precision in the form and a better tool life.

TuNgSTeN CArbIde

TuNgSTeN CArbIde is made in a powder metallurgy process. The main components are carbides (usually tungsten carbide) and binders (usually cobalt). Nickel is also used but more rarely. Being so extraordinarily versatile has made tungs-ten carbide a firm favourite in machining - wear and corrosion protection - forming - stone working and mining.Close monitoring of the alloys together with constant development of new production and testing methods ensure the outstanding chemical and mechanical properties of our tungsten carbide.

Multi-purpose grades of tungsten carbidesWe supply all types of tungsten carbides perfectly adapted to your needs - from proven standard grades through to universally deployable multi-purpose grades and special grades. The various properties of the individual grades are achieved by varying the proportions of the components in the mixture, by selecting and combining the tungsten carbide grain form and grain size and by means of perfectly coordinated process control. NHT has grades in the ideal quality for every requirement.

At NHT, the sinter material TuNgSTeN-COPPer goes under the brand name of EROMET and is mainly produced with a tungsten/copper content of 80/20, 75/25 and 90/10 (% by weight). Tungsten-copper [EROMET] is characterised by a low burn-off rate, excellent electric and thermal conductivity and good machinability.

EROMET is used for electrodes for electrical discharge machining (EDM) and in electrical switchgear in the form of switching contacts for high and medium voltage. Its outstanding properties are its high temperature stability resulting from the tungsten matrix and its excellent electrical and thermal conductivity resulting from the infiltrated copper.

TuNgSTeNTuNgSTeN Special (WS) - non radioactive!The NHT tungsten alloy for the manufacture of welding, spot welding and contact electrodes with an extremely low burn-off rate and top level of form stability. Compared to tungsten (chemically pure), WS is especially characterised by a better creep resistance and a higher recrystallization temperature. A higher recrystallization temperature leads to better and longer resilience at high and extremely high temperatures (better tool life). Moreover, WS can be machined better, which means that high-quality finishes can be achieved which, in turn, result in enhanced tool life.

TuNgSTeN (chemically pure) is produced by means of the powder metallurgical process with a purity of at least 99.95%. Tungs-ten, chemically pure, possesses outstanding properties, such as:• An extremely high melting point (3420°C) - the highest of all metals - with a low vapour pressure (at 2000°C < 4.10-s [Pa])• High elastic modulus• Good thermal stability with a low thermal expansion coefficient• High density of 19.3 g/cm³ (at 20°C)• Good chemical resistance against inorganic acids, alkaline solutions, organic acids, non-metals, glass without oxidization agents, molten

glass and gases• Consistently good corrosion behaviour compared to molten metals

In its physical and chemical values, tungsten displays properties typical of refractory metals. These are all metals with a melting point higher than that of platinum (1772°C). They are deployed up to around 2900°C (3173K).

Tungsten is mainly used as a basic material in numerous tungsten alloys, e.g. lanthanum oxide-doped tungsten, tungsten heavy alloy, tungsten–copper (EROMET). It has fewer uses in its pure form, e.g. crucibles in the coating industry, heat shielding and heating elements.

ProcessingTungsten is difficult to process, displaying great resistance to any kind of forming and machining (high level of wear on tools). Tungsten and its alloys are easier to process when the brittle-ductile transition temperature is taken into account. At room temperature its ductility is very low.

Just small amounts of alloy additives lower the brittle-ductile transition temperature. All tungsten alloys are therefore easier to process than pure tungsten.

The better processing temperatures are well over the brittle-ductile transition temperature, which is 200°C for a sheet 1 mm thick and 380°C for a sheet 7 mm thick. Turning, milling with tungsten carbide, drilling with HSS and grinding with silicon carbide are all possible. When punching, cutting and transverse rupture, attention must be paid to the sheet thickness and the processing temperature. The material should be bent at right angles to the direction of rolling (microstructure lengthways). If this is not structurally possible, the processing temperature must be increa-sed considerably. Transverse rupture radius ≥ sheet thickness should be adhered to.
