MISSION:

USS CROMMELIN (FFG-37) i s the t h i r t y - f i r s t ship o f the Ol iver Hazard Perry Class o f Guided Miss i le Frigates. CROMMELIN1s mission i s t o provide ant i -a i r , anti-submarine, and anti-surface protect ion f o r underway replenishment groups, convoys, amphibious forces, and other m i l i t a r y and merchant shipping. I n recent years, many ships of the FFG-7 class ( including CRWMELIN) have been speci f ica l ly tasked with providing escort and monitor services t o U.S.- and Allied-flagged merchant shipping i n the Persian Gulf. CRUMMEL1NI.s most recent tasking has included operations i n Follow-On Counternarcotics operations o f f the coast o f Central America.

I n order t o ensure a homogenous class of capable yet r e l a t i v e l y inexpensive ships, many innovative concepts were incorporated i n t o her design. These innovations include modular construction techniques, the use o f numerous labor-saving devices, automatic contro l and monitoring systems, and shore- based maintenance support. The ship boasts some of the most comfortable l i v i n g accommodations ever provided for the crew of a naval combatant. Hab i tab i l i t y improvements include a t t rac t i ve l i v i n g complexes (each with i t s own lounge), dressing, sleeping and sanitary areas.

Success i n the warfare environment of the 1990's and beyond w i l l require thorough evaluation, rap id decision making, and almost instantaneous response t o any postulated threat. The systems aboard CROMMELIN have been designed t o meet these demanding and dynamic prerequisites and t o do so wi th minimum human interface. Her weapons include surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles, a 76MM gun, a Close I n Weapon System, and anti-submarine torpedoes. The Lamps Mark I I I /V ideo Data Link system brings state-of-the-art computer technology t o the anti-submarine warfare arena as we l l as in tegrat ing sensors and weapons t o provide a t o t a l offensive and defensive weapons system.

I n addition, computers contro l and monitor the gas turbine engines and sh ip 's service d iesel generators. D i g i t a l e lectronic l og i c c i r c u i t s and remotely operated valves are monitored i n a centra l contro l s ta t ion which can i n i t i a t e engine s t a r t and a t t a i n a "Ready t o Goff status i n less than ten minutes, as compared t o eight or more hours for conventional steam power propulsion plants. The r e a l heart o f the ship, however, i s her crew. High technology systems demand s k i l l e d technicians and professional leadership. The concept o f nminimum manningm means, simply, tha t with professional sa i lo rs CROMMELIN can meet the challenges of modern naval warfare wi th approximately h a l f the crew found on older ships o f comparable s ize and capabi l i ty. Freedom's Finest Guardian, USS CROMMELIN, proudly l i v e s up t o her motto, "Munus Bene Facit,If that i s , n D ~ t y Well Done."
