Are You Prepared? A recent study conducted by the Association of American

Colleges and Universities (AACU) found that employers

have concerns about the range of skills new graduates

may display and that new graduates perceive themselves

to be stronger in those areas. The areas of the widest dis-

crepancy were “critical/analytical thinking” and “working

with people from different backgrounds”. The results

seem to show that graduates may be overestimating their

preparedness in key skill areas that are desired by em-

ployers. I invite everyone to read the article and deter-

mine how we can better discuss these issues with stu-

dents so they are able to articulate their learning in ways

that connect with employers. The article may be found at

Day, Fort Lewis College

hosted a number of events

to honor the ideals set

forth by the man himself.

As part of the Social Justice

Festival, “The Power of the

Stencil in Making Change”

workshop gave students an

opportunity to be creative

with their ideas for social

change. More than 100 peo-

ple participated in this fes-

tival in its inaugural year.

Ideas for Innovation

The Ideas for Innovation Summit is an opportunity for FLC students to pre-sent and vote on practical, student led initiatives that make FLC a better place. Four students present their ideas at this year’s event, on January 26th in the Vallecito Room of the Student Union.

Idea 1 - FLC students should be able regis-ter their parties with the Durango Police De-partment. The idea is that when a noise com-plaint is filed on a party, the residents will be notified that they are being too loud instead of having their party shutdown.

Idea 2 - Improve the disc golf course on campus, by adding artificial boulders in the area behind the Bader-Snyder Complex. One of the main points of this presentation was that not only would this provide students a way to climb anytime on campus, but also make FLC a more attractive college destina-tion for prospective students that love climb-ing and disc golf.

Idea 3 - Build an adult playground on campus. This idea would not on-ly provide students with a means to feel like a kid again, but would also fur-ther campus sustainability by using a material that doesn’t need water as op-pose to grass.

Idea 4 - Shows at the Concert Hall are too expensive for students to attend and it would be great if every student got a ticket punch-card to see a set amount of shows every year.

Throughout the evening students voted on their favorite ideas. By the end the night, the goal of this “meeting of the minds” had been accomplished and then some. Not only did students come and support each other, but they also left asking questions about how else they could improve Fort Lewis College in a meaningful way.

Student Wellness Initiatives February…the month of love. Love it or hate it, most of us can’t help but associate it with Valentine’s Day and all the fluff that comes with it. It’s human nature to want to be cherished and recognized by others, but let’s not forget how very important it is for us to nurture ourselves, to cherish the individual within, and to remember that being alone cer-tainly doesn’t mean you have to be lonely.

With this said, WellPAC is planning some fun events before Valentine’s Day with a self-love theme. Our “Treat Yo’Self” campaign will include fun freebies, educational handouts, and lots of affirmations and will take place Wed 2/11—Fri 2/13 in the Union during the lunch hour.

Also keep an eye out for the new-

est edition of Toilet Talk in the

Student Union with a focus on

positive body image and healthy

relationships. By the way, if you

ever have an issue you’d like to

see us address in Toilet Talk,

send an email to kgreich-

[email protected]. We are open

to your suggestions!

Check out the new sexual assault

prevention posters around campus.

This is the first in a series of six.
