Semester Wrap-Up Spring Break has come and gone. This means we are
now looking towards the final month of classes. In this
edition of our monthly newsletter, we share some new
additions (babies!) as well as programs occurring this
month. We also highlight the 2nd Annual Alternative
Spring Break (ASB). More information is forthcoming
but suffice it to say that this year’s ASB was life chang-
ing and extremely impactful. My staff and I wish all
students a successful finish to their academic
year. We’ve enjoyed working closely with so many out-
standing students and look forward to saying farewell
and congratulations to our newest group of FLC gradu-
ates. We hope you will stop by and say hello whenever
you find yourself back on campus. - Mark Mastalski

Student Wellness Initiatives
WellPAC is bringing a new event to campus, Unsafe Sex is a Slippery Slope, to educate students on the risks and consequences of unprotected sex. On April 10th, FLC stu-dents can participate in a slip-and-slide obstacle course to learn more about safe sex practices in a super fun way. Time and location are TBD, but keep an eye out for upcoming program flyers around campus!
This year WellPAC is sending four members to the BAC-CHUS Regional Conference in Denver, CO on April 17th and 18th. WellPAC members Kevin Gardner, Lindsay Roach, Samantha Garcia, and Kate Suazo will be represent-ing Fort Lewis College at the regional conference to learn more about health and wellness programming for colleges.
Thursday, April 9th, WellPAC will be hosting a Free Alcohol Screening to learn more about FLC students and their
drinking habits. Participate and get freebies from WellPAC.
Look for De-Stress Fest this year on Thursday, April 23rd at the
Amphitheater. WellPAC will be working with the La Plata
County Humane Society to bring puppies to campus, along
with providing freebies, yoga, massages, and other de-
stressing activities free to FLC students.

Alternative Spring Break
I had the good fortune of helping to organize the Al-ternative Spring Break trip, and was accompanied by some of the best people I’ve ever met. The stu-dents who signed up were passionate, soulful, and committed to the purpose of the trip: helping oth-ers, conservation, and having the time of our lives while doing so.
We had campfires, good food, and worked hard. We dug ditches, weeded school gardens, and pruned
fruit trees. We met amazing people who are working with all their heart to educate their communities about preserving traditions which in turn develop healthy lifestyles and self-reliance. We experienced the power and beauty of the Grand Canyon, remembering stories we were told of local tribes’ sacred connections to the canyon as a place of emergence. We made personal connections which have strengthened our collective commitment to helping people, making the world a better place, and getting our hands dirty.
The next step is clear. We who had the good for-tune to go on this trip will remember our new connections to the people and the places we visit-ed. Each of us have different passions which will lead us to uncover different parts of the story of Durango and La Plata County, the people who live here, and even others who are affected by what happens here. There are many local farms, pro-jects, and possibilities here that stand to make the world a better place, and we've proven to our-selves that we can build the right connections and pick up a shovel. This is what Alternative Spring
Break is all about, hands-on experience of change and bringing that experience back home into our own community - after all, there's a lot of work to be done.
During Spring Break, the Environmental Center and the Leadership Cen-ter sponsored their second annual Alternative Spring Break. Here is a re-port from Lionel Di Giacomo, the student who coordinated the trip:
