Flavio ManzoBorn in a small town in the west cost of Tuscany in Italy, Castiglione Della Pescaia, formed at the University of Architecture and engineering of Florence, Flavio developed an interest in other country’s cultures with a curiosity about architecture, land usage, and cultures. This led him to work and study abroad: UK, Austria, Spain, USA, Cuba and Asia to end up in South Africa where he started his career. After working in some of the major architecture companies in Cape Town he started working on its own as a Architectural consultant for a few architecture companies and some private client in commercial and residential building. His architectural work, building and interiors, expresses a contemporarydesignaesthetic, influencedbyanoldItalianculturaltradition, which does not want to separate beauty from function.
The desire to challenge architecture solution forms, details and create always more attractive element of design, resulted excellent personal relationship with a number of architects and clients.
Because his back ground traditions, and his investigative attitude you can consider him a complete architect able to manage project from low-costing eco-sustainable housing to luxury hospitality building, from joinery design and Interior design detailing to large scale urban planning and from structural engineering to contract administration and site manager.
Flavio was involved in a number of international projects between Europe, Asia and Africa including hits experience in Cape Town with MMA architect, DesignSpace Afria, Vernon Head architects and Team Architects. At the moment he is multitasking for a number projects by “Denniston International Architect” in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) and few private dwelling in Cape Town (RSA) and Lusaka (Zambia)
Lately, after few trips in Middle-east and Emirates, he showed his interest for farm tower buildings and hydroponic farming and gardening to make our super crowded metropolis more livable.

- Architecture Prtototype Buildings: Sand-bags low cost housing
This award-winning design started out as part of the 10x10 Low Cost Housing Project by Design Indaba, the premier Expo for Design in Africa, inviting 10 local and 10 international architects to produce designs for ‘low cost houseswithinthe S.A Govt subsidy budget of R50.000’. The Project Team led by Design Principal, Luyanda Mpahlwa was allocated the Jonker Family of 8, andsetouttocreateanaffordableanddignifiedhousing solution. The resulting design features an Ecobeam timber frame structure filled withsandbags which is then plastered over and parts clad with timber boarding. This project presented the Design Team with the challenge of developing a new paradigm on low cost housing design, resolving issues of sustainable design and the biggest challenge being to meet the stringent budget. The design process followed in this project was thorough, and the result has proved to be groundbreaking.

- Architecture Recreational/Sports: Nike Football training centre soweto
The project, conceptualized by NIKE designers, was a product of international collaboration. DesignSpaceAfrica being the local architects, had the important task of translating the designto thespecificSouthAfricandesignandconstruction parameters in the spirit of Nike Designers: RUF Project(Sean Pearson) and Andy Walker (Nike Brand Manager/Designer). Nike designers also commissioned very talented local and international designers and artists to produce artwork and graphics of a very high standard. The Football Training Centre. Soweto (FTC.S) was an existing football training ground for approximately 1200 youth clubs under the administration of Soweto Football Association. The objective for the new centre was to refurbish the centre and transform it into a state of the art high-performance and life skills centre for the development of football, particularly for the youth in Soweto. The facility has now become the most successful and utilized venue for International Youth soccer competitions in South Africa. The concept for the building was developed as aunique, ‘high-enddesign’butappropriateandwell integrated into the SOWETO environment. The architecture envisaged an appropriate sports facility which responded well to its context. For this reason natural materials, a combination of sandstone cladding, gabion walls and timber, were found to be appropriate. Timber screens on the facade were added to soften the robust exterior materials. The juxtaposition of these natural materials against the harsh context and Highveld climate

- Architecture Educational: Three Schools
Our firm was commissioned for three primaryschool projects simultaneously. Two schools are located in Khayelitsha Township and one school in Delft, in the Cape Flats. Modelled on the Ekuthuleni Primary School, the designs captured the design concept which achieved a ‘high-quality educational facilities in poor anddeprived communities, and offering a creative teaching and learning environment towards the development of young learners’.Lessons learnt in the initial design were applied to improve the design product. The Design team had theopportunitytoundertakedesignrefinementsin the execution of the new three schools project. However, the design of each school had to be adapted to each site context and orientation. The key challenge was to streamline production and construction documentation in order to meet project deadlines for all three schools. Our firm is in a fortunate position to have hadthe experience the develop a sustainable school building typology.

- ArchitecturePubbic Infrastructure: Multy Storey Parkade 1
The Design Team was commissioned to erect a multi-storey Parkade (MSP 1) with 2000 parking bays at the Cape Town International Airport. The project was part of a 7 year upgrade of the Airport precinct, presumably as part of the 2010 FIFA World Cup infrastructure upgrade. The biggest challenge was to execute such a large structurewithina ‘workingairportenvironment’.The project team was afforded the opportunity to work in a highly complex airport environment which required high levels of coordination with various ACSA stakeholders. The high quality concrete building was erected onfivelevels,capturingthespiritofaero-dynamicdesign influences derived from the aeroplanestaking off. Wing-like roof design, aerofoil façade screen elements and innovative interiors, have been chosen to articulate a pleasing architectural aesthetic in the harsh airport environment. The MSP screen facades have become iconic elements of the refurbished and modernised airport building.

The client’s wishes regarding the design of her new apartment were clear and simple: it should be similar to the design of her architect’s apartment – spacious, open, floodedwith lightand white. Accordingly, the color “WHITE” became the determining feature of the interior design concept.Theapartment isononeof theupperfloorsofa residential building in the east of Graz, which was designed by an architect. The apartment offers qualities like proximity to the city centre, lots of light, communicative access balconies with private patios, spacious balconies and a clearandsimplefloorplan. The elimination of most walls transformed the standard four-room apartment into an open loft floodedwithlight.Theremainingwallsbecamean integral part of floor-to-ceiling furniture, thereby creating an ambience that realized the motto “living without walls”. Where partitioning wasrequired,itwasaccomplishedbyfloorto-ceiling glass walls. Necessities like guest WC, boiler and washing machine, are hidden in a floor-to-ceiling“mirroredfurniturebox”.Thisboxalso opens up the apartment and makes it seem bigger. The only materials used were glass, white furniture fronts, textiles and gravel in the form of smooth uninterrupted floor covering, which emphasizes the open floor plan. Theglass was partly imprinted with pictures of the client, thereby adding a lively touch. The same white fronts were used on all furniture, which was made by a cabinet-maker. Only some fronts andniches were covered with soft furry textiles, which, together with white curtains, add a soft and cozy touch to the otherwise purist design.

- Interiors: Loft F27
The concept “Black or White“ is the underlying idea of a radical new design for an urban apartment in the north of Graz. Modern architecture has transformed a two-storey apartment built in the 1990s into a multi-functional loft serving as homeand office.Whereas the owners see theapartment as the perfect fusion of functional andextravagant design, some visitors tend to regard it as too austere.“Living without walls” was the underlying idea behind the architect’s design that has turned the classicthreeroomapartmentintoaflexiblelivingspace by removing all interior walls. The result of moving the living quarters to the top floorwasapenthouse-like livingspacefloodedwith light through the new “window to the city”.The inside floor covering is continued onto thebalcony, which, together with cocoon-like textile walls on the balcony, makes inside and outside spaces melt into one.The office loft F27 is a modern example of asymbiosis of “living and working” spaces. A few simplechangesturntheofficespace,theflexiblesleeping/conference room, the glass sanitary box andthepatioonthelowerfloorintoacomfortableofficearea. The private upper floor can be accessed by aseparate entrance from outside. On entering the room you are immediately captivated by the open room concept and the views over the city.Glass, gravel, flokati, and numerous colorfullighting systems.Thewallsofthebathroomboxarefrostedfloor-to-ceiling glass, the front sides of the furniture are white plexiglass, which is perfectly suited to being lit by LED panels.Inset furniture boxes and sliding-folding elements arecoveredinsoft,fur-likeflokatitextiles,whichadds a soft touch to the otherwise very puristic atmosphere.Even if it may not be immediately obvious – you have arrived at the architect’s very personal “world of wonders”.

- Urban:Mupine Sustainable Residential Development
DesignSapceAfrica was appointed for Architecture & Urban Design Services by Old Mutual South Africa for the development of a sustainable Residential Village in Pinelands. The concept Design envisages 500 Units on a 7ha site. The project was taken to the design development stage and financial viability. The design wasdeveloped according to Green Design Principles and a 5xStar Green Rating was being achieved at the end of Procap Stage 3. Concurrent with Old Mutual’s vision for the project to create a sustainable environment , DesignSpaceAfrica incorporated “green principles” with a view to address both social as well as material aspects of the built environment. The design response to achieve sustainability was based not only on using resources efficiently, but also on developing adesign methodology which incorporated all the green design principles including the principle of appropriate orientation of buildings to maximise natural light and ventilation principles. The energysupplywasdiversifiedbetweenESKOMelectricity supply, gas supply and solar energy collection which incorporated solar Geysers. On site waste water treatment was provided, incorporating a bio-gas digester and reed beds aspartofgreywaterpurificationandreticulation. The green design principles were applied both for the buildings and the green open spaces to create a harmonic relationship between the future residents and their environment, including the promotion of waste recycling. The Mupine Village is situated near a Railway station and was designed to be largely pedestrian friendly allowing for generous cycle and walking paths. The project was put on hold in 2008.
