tenure at Balenciaga, they stand out here too. In line with fashion’s ongoing obsession with sportswear, the athletic references abound. Mohair sweaters with stripes down their sleeves bring to mind varsity jackets. Colourblocked stretchy tops with leather patchwork sleeves, and form-fi tting dresses with ruffl es at the hem are easy to wear and warrant a second glance.

The wide range of bags are equally versatile to suit the woman on the go. The standout piece, the City Steamer, is an iteration of the original 1901 carryall that was crafted for transatlantic travel. Updated with a structured yet ladylike shape, it comes in a variety of colours and fi nishes, and has several compartments for life’s everyday essentials.

Says Ghesquiere: “I’m not pretending to do a big statement. I try to refl ect how women dress today... the mix… all the athletic things, sports, the luxury, the innovation.”

NINE SEASONS ON, NICOLAS GHESQUIERE REVEALS HIS MOST CONFIDENT COLLECTION FOR LOUIS VUITTON, ONE THAT LOOKS

TO THE PAST, YET IS RELEVANT FOR THE PRESENT.

为 现 代 女 中 豪 杰 编 制 衣 裳

He may be one of fashion’s most experimental designers, but Nicolas Ghesquiere is equally confi dent when designing the everywoman’s wardrobe. The emphasis here is on wearability. While his earlier collections for Louis Vuitton took on a futuristic spin, this season’s looks to the past for inspiration, and is decidedly approachable. Vintage-looking chain or paisley scarf prints turn up on sexy slip dresses, and are paired with edgy leather motorcycle jackets for a grungy effect.

Just as his street-inspired looks were most memorable during his decade-long

The collection consisted of highly wearable pieces made for what Ghesquiere describes as a "digital heroine".

Held at the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris,

the set of the Fall/Winter 2016 presentation was

created in collaboration with artist Justin Morin, and evoked a futuristic

lost underwater world with 200,000

pieces of hand-fixed shattered mirrors.

From New York to Paris, there’s something for every fashion persona this season – whether you’re channelling the outdoors-loving girl, romantic history buff, feminine utilitarian or shine-embracing party chick.

T H E G R E AT O U T D O O R SThere’s no lack of outerwear options this season, with designers offering a varied and luxurious range.

Oversized puffer coats are ruling the runways, layered over everything from sheer party dresses to casual streetwear. The key is adding unexpected contrasts. DKNY’s options have a waterproof sheen, while lace-up details add interest. At Carven, Alexis Martial and Adrien Caillaudaud offer up a deliciously girlish quilted lilac version, putting an unexpected dash of Spring pastels in the usually dark Fall/Winter palette.

Fur trims are the order of the day in Moncler’s Grenoble collection, used to embellish more pared-down, fi tted silhouettes. At the other end of the spectrum, Dean and Dan Caten of Dsquared2 dream up an otherworldly warrior princess with a mix of samurai and Victoriana influences. The result: camouflage-print parkas, sporty jodhpurs, and lush fur-lined outerwear with flaps reminiscent of medieval armour, for a fierce yet soft, ready-to-take-on-the-world look.

R E N A I S S A N C E R O M A N C EFashion has always drawn inspiration from the past, and this season, designers look to the decadent Victorian period. The era’s dramatic elegance is updated with modern touches. At Valentino, Pierpaolo Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiuri add sparkles to their frilled chiffon dresses, while over at Dolce&Gabbana, it’s about highly decorated military styles and delicate boned silhouettes.

Fashion designers know just what to give the coats of the season a twist. Menswear-inspired detailing such as the double-breasted jacket is given a gentler touch at Bottega Veneta in the form of an oversized cardigan, while at Burberry, Louis Vuitton, Miu Miu and Prada, softer textures such as shearling wool, fox fur and velvet are added to blazers and coats alike.

S H I N E O NThere are plenty of options for the upcoming holiday season, whether it’s Hedi Slimane’s metallic ’80s-inspired micro dresses at Saint Laurent, Diane von Furstenberg’s fun and sparkly numbers, or Burberry’s glittery brocade styles.

A cultural visit to one of the oldest Himalayan Buddhist temples in Bhutan, the Kyichu Lhakhang. A spiritual journey to the iconic Tiger’s Nest monastery.A birthday dinner at the architecturally stunning Bukhari restaurant. A spa day at the exclusive COMO Uma Paro. It can be challenging to pack for an itinerary with such varied activities, but Kim Lim – daughter of Singapore billionaire Peter Lim, and a social media darling with thousands of followers – does itwith ease.

Invited to this experiential holiday and photoshoot in Bhutan as ION Orchard’s The 100 VIP member, she knew she was in for a treat; that her birthday fell within the travel dates was an extra bonus.

To look her best for this special trip, she turns to her favourite brands: an interesting mix of high street names such as Zara and COS, and iconic luxury brands like Saint Laurent and Valentino. Electing to pack “mainly jumpers, denim jeans and sneakers”, which are also her “style essentials”,

she shares how she took extra care to dress more appropriately, as she knew Bhutan is staunchly Buddhist. Accessories-wise, her holiday style is “statement accessories that bring out the personality of each outfi t”.

And doing just that are versatile pieces from Cartier that she pairs with every outfi t. A Panthère de Cartier necklace in yellow gold, emeralds, onyx and diamonds brightens up a demure dress in a romantic shade of dusty rose. A bold Panthère de Cartier ring in non-rhodiumised white gold, tsavorite garnets and onyx add spunk to a classic lounge ensemble of smoking jacket and tailored trousers. A discreet pink gold Juste Un Clou bracelet with diamonds adds a hint of glamour to a preppy outfi t. These pieces – quietly elegant, yet exuding a strong, distinct character – were the perfect complements to the style-forward looks Kim rocked in Bhutan.

“While the Panthère de Cartier represents my style the best, I also love the simplicity of the Amulette de Cartier, Juste Un Clou and Love series. These are the pieces that are timeless and easy to match with my busy schedule, which is packed with a variety of activities every day,” Kim reveals.

L E A N M AC H I N E At a svelte 5.9mm, the Saxonia Thin is A. Lange & Sohne’s slimmest timepiece to date – thanks to a movement that is just 2.9mm thick. The elegant time-only watch is manually wound and available in two sizes – pick from 37mm or 40mm dials – and in your choice of white or pink gold.

J U S T R I G H T The Rolex Datejust has seen numerous tweaks in its 71-year history, but has always remained highly recognisable. The 2016 Datejust 41 models join the line-up with various Rolesor (two-tone steel and gold) iterations, the return of the fi ve-piece link Jubilee bracelet, and a brand new movement.

DY N A M I C D U O The 85th anniversary celebrations for Jaeger-LeCoultre’s beloved Reverso line mean a posse of iterations to look forward to. Case in point: It shoemaker Christian Louboutin’s high-fashion take on the emblematic timepiece. Flaunt Louboutin’s signature red lining on the straps of these iridescent statements.

S K I N O N S K I N Hublot proves that the use of leather in watchmaking shouldn't and doesn't have to be restricted to straps. Shoemaker Berluti lends its signature smoky Venezia leather to the Classic Fusion Berluti's dial as well as strap. The All Black version is crafted from ceramic and titanium. Hublot is available at L’Atelier by The Hour Glass.

J O U R N E Y I N T I M E A solid traveller's watch is essential for the jet set. Cartier rises to the challenge with the Drive de Cartier Second Time Zone Day/Night watch. With its vintage automobile-inspired cushion-shaped case, it is an icon in the making. Each model in the handsome Drive collection is powered by in-house movements.

For a super-light yet dramatic statement on the wrist, opt for Panerai's skeletonised Lo Scienziato Luminor 1950 Tourbillon GMT Titanio, available in titanium for the fi rst time.

If complexity under the hood is what you seek, Patek Philippe's new World Time Chronograph Ref 5930 packs a proprietary self-winding chronograph movement beneath its blue, manually guilloched dial.

Alternatively, look to Vacheron Constantin's new Hallmark of Geneva-certifi ed Overseas collection. Its interchangeable straps and bracelets make it a breeze to change your look every day.

The latest trend in fi ne jewellery design: celebrating nature’s beauty by using its gifts of precious metals, pearls and gems.

Cactus de Cartier and pieces from the La Nature de Chaumet collection are just some exquisite examples. Clusters of emerald, chrysoprase and carnelian beads – smooth yet textured – resemble fl eshy spheres of cactus blooming under the desert sun. Brilliant-cut white diamonds, cushion-cut Ceylon sapphires, red spinels, rhodolite garnets and green tourmalines form quietly elegant stalks of laurel and lily, wreaths of oak leaves and sheaves of wheat.

From Harry Winston comes the Lotus Cluster: a collection of diamond pendants, earrings and rings set in a fl oral motif that is mesmerisingly intricate. At Van Cleef & Arpels, some 1,400 carats of exceptional emeralds sourced from Zambia and Columbia – symbolising spring and the abundance of life – have been crafted into the Emeraude en Majeste collection, including a sumptuously detailed Bouquet d’emeraudes clip, encrusted with round diamonds, cabochon-cut chrysoprase and 11 petals of intensely coloured emeralds.IL

The depths of the oceans also hold an abundance of beauty. The lustrous pearl, for one, has enchanted man for centuries. In ancient Greece, for instance, they are believed to be formed when lightning hits the surface of the ocean. Pearl expert Mikimoto spins a new fairytale with a garland formed with 17 golden South Sea pearls, accompanied by 31.57 carats of diamond. Tiffany & Co.’s 2016 Blue Book collection – themed The Art of Transformation – has design director Francesca Amfi theatrof taking us from under the waves to the edge of the water with yellow gold brooches made in the likeness of exotic frogs, and an amazingly detailed salamander brooch encrusted in a shower of tsavorites, cuprian elbaite tourmalines, spessarites, yellow diamonds and pink sapphires.

And as an ode to the ultimate source of life, Larry Jewellery has unveiled its Timeless Nature collection, which includes a Helios Radiance necklace featuring a 4.32-carat fancy yellow diamond fl anked by 52.16 carats of diamond-encrusted butterfl ies. Fancy diamonds and sapph ires of myriad colours are also put together to recreate the alluring form of fl owers such as lilies, incanas and forget-me-nots.

Some of the latest haute joaillerie presentations also tell of Dior Joaillerie’s long relationship with nature. Victoire de Castellane, creative director of the jewellery house, draws on the English garden of Christian Dior’s childhood home for the Granville haute joaillerie collection. The bold colours of green beryl, peridot, morganite, aquamarine, tanzanite, chrysoberyl, pink tourmaline and rubellite not only come together to resemble the rainbow of fl owers Monsieur Dior grew up with, but also convey a distinct sense of child-like innocence and creativity.

An old adage goes: If it ain’t broke, don’t fi x it. The ION Orchard fl agship of Sephora – every beauty junkie’s favourite haunt – may have moved down to B2, but it has defi nitely amped up its game with its new premises.

How, you ask? For starters, Make Up For Ever introduces its sushi bar to Asia, where you select items from a conveyor belt, or pick up a “bento box” of products. There’s also a fi rst-in-Singapore Made In Sephora gondola. Fancy a makeover? The Beauty Studio is now bigger and better. And there’s a host of new brands exclusive to Sephora ION Orchard.

L I G H T A N D R E F R E S H I N GFresh fragrances tend to be fl oral-, citrus- or fruit-based, with uplifting green notes. Prime example? Chanel’s No. 5 L’Eau (price unavailable), which retains the fl oral elements of the iconic No. 5, but with greener ylang ylang and citrus notes, and less vanilla. The exquisite rose heart of Miss Dior Absolutely Blooming ($115 for 30ml) is sensuous, but raspberry, pomegranate and pink peppercorn keep it joyful.

Bergamot, white peach, rosebuds and white musk give the Salvatore Ferragamo Emozione DolceFiore ($180 for 92ml) a delicate, ultra-feminine feel. At Yves Saint Laurent, Mon Paris ($229 for 90ml) ups the sex factor with warm ambrox and patchouli, but is still vibrant, thanks to zingy bergamot, and juicy berry and pear accords. Victoria’s Secret Love is Heavenly The Fragrance ($129 for 100ml) blends light, transparent fl orals like waterlily and mandarin fl ower.

Then there’s a whole range of light-toned unisex fragrances: Commodity Goods The White Collection ($146 for

D OW N T O E A R T HThis season’s dark scents – typically fl oral but with warm, earthy tones or oriental notes like incense or wood – make up for their lack of numbers with intensity.

My Burberry Black (price unavailable) is a new twist on the original My Burberry scent, imagining the sensual feel of a black coat against bare skin, with warm jasmine and peach nectar, a rose heart, and a rich jasmine and patchouli fi nish. Penhaligon’s Lady Blanche (price unavailable), inspired by a wicked English female aristocrat, is described as a narcotic green fl oral with powdery notes of orris, heady narcissus and hyacinth. Intense but still refi ned, at the border of light and dark, it’s perfect as a day-to-night scent.

Everything old is new again, from fashion to home decor. That said, a completely vintage-looking abode can be beautiful but overwhelming for some (think Wes Anderson’s whimsically wonderful sets!). Yet, the judicious placement of a piece or two, mixed with contemporary items, can add an eclectic dimension to your home. Proof Living and Crate and Barrel show us how.

Fully wallpapered interiors usually aren’t fast friends with tropical heat and humidity. So opt for commanding, elaborate wall pieces instead to conjure up the decadence of the good old days. The golden hue and elaborate 18th century-inspired scrollwork on the Bishopsgate Mirror gives a suitable impression of imperiousness.

Another piece that instantly imbues a room with a sense of history is the Chester One Sofa – the capitonne-fi nished leather makes for ample seating with a luxurious touch. For something a little more personal, Italian brand Poltrona Frau has just the answer: the 1919 Armchair. Its curves – a refl ection of the opulence during the Baroque period – invites one to curl up in it.

If the more fl amboyant epochs aren’t quite your cup of tea, swing the other way with classic, muted silhouettes. The striking simplicity of the Vienna Black Wood Dining Chair, for instance, has never gone out of style. Based on the iconic bentwood chair created by Michael Thonet in 1859, it has served as the inspiration for cafe chairs since.

Once you’ve decided on the key pieces, don’t kill the vintage vibe with stark white light. Instead, keep the overall look contemporary by adding warmth with touches of brass.

Standing lamps like the Carthage Helmet Head Table Lamp in Natural Brass – inspired by vintage infantry helmets – will do the trick. If you’re ready for a permanent commitment lighting-wise, choice picks include the jointed industrial appeal of the three-bulb Atwell Pendant Light and the Damen Pendant Light. Clear glass elements help anchor the look in the modern day.

Prefer the crispness of glass? Go for an authentic vintage ambience with candlelight – the Barlow Short Clear Glass Pillar Candle Holder or the Barlow Short Hurricane will frame your choice of candles beautifully, and work well on their own or grouped together.

VISIT: ION ART GALLERY LEVEL 4

This September, ION Art Gallery presents the solo exhibitions of four talented young artists. They will run concurrently as an event supported by ION Orchard, in collaboration with the Affordable Art Fair.

The artworks are based on a number of themes, but if there is one thing they all have in common, it’s that they deal with ephemerality or transience in some way. The artists – Chong Yanhong, Justin Lim, Holeng and Yeo Jian Long – drew from their experiences of the cities they live in and the constant change surrounding them.

The artists spent nine months preparing for their exhibition, under the guidance of ION Art’s programme

curator. During this time, they not only experimented with various techniques and materials, they also discussed their challenges and honed their working processes.

Chong, for instance, had long loved charcoal as a medium. However, in working on her pieces for her exhibition, entitled This Too Shall Pass, she abandoned this, looking at how she could transfer them instead. “Through the process of multiple layers of transfer, the images were pulled and torn, and bits and pieces of brittle paper were left behind on the surface of the canvas,” she shares. “The resulting work refl ects a landscape, which is crumbly and indefi nite.” This process,

she adds, refl ects her thoughts on the indefi niteness of the idea of space in a city, and allows viewers to reconstruct the space and landscape in their minds.

Yeo’s artistic process unfolded just as naturally. Whereas his earlier works were drawings tracing random lines and using seemingly arbitrary colours, his new work refl ects a new mode of drawing, one that uses white ink to create negative images. Titled A Quiet Beauty, his collection is spectral, ethereal and hauntingly beautiful.

To see the works that culminated from the mentorship programme, visit the Young Talent Programme’s Winners’ Solo Exhibitions at ION Art Gallery, from Sep 1 to 20, 2016.

TEXT SASHA GONZALES

Forty-year-old French architect-turned-photographer Laurent Dequick loves cities – so much so that he makes a living photographing them. But his pictures are no ordinary depictions of urban life. His photos of buildings, roads and streets appear to be constantly changing or on the move. The recently launched Singapore series, available in the YellowKorner fl agship gallery at ION Orchard, is no exception. He shares more on its creation, as well as his journey, with the YellowKorner photographic art community.

D E Q U I C K ’S C R E AT I V EP R O C E S SBefore shooting, Dequick says: “I fi rst ‘feel’ the city. I’ll walk the streets all day long, trying to identify the best spots from different distances and heights.

“Back in my studio, I become a painter, and the photos become my colours. The lights, the noise, the traffi c, the swarms of pedestrians, the blend of smells are so fascinating that no single shot can capture it all.”

Thereafter, he translates this urban congestion into an image using juxtaposition, superposition or the overlaying of shots. Photographs of architectural complexes, main traffi c routes and people are overlapped to “condense the images, like the city condenses the sum of its inhabitants’ lives”.

W O R K I N G W I T H Y E L L OW KO R N E R PA R I SWith seven years’ collaboration with YellowKorner Paris under his belt, he sees its 80 galleries worldwide making his work accessible to collectors from “just about everywhere”.

Besides being a great platform for showcasing an artist’s vision, the Parisian initiative, he agrees, has achieved its vision of democratising art photography. He shares: “Everyone can buy these works at reasonable prices now. What’s also wonderful is that YellowKorner organises these signing events, and I really enjoy meeting photography afi cionados and discussing their cities with them.”

Left, from top: Techniques such as juxtaposition, superposition and the overlaying of shots are used to capture a city's dynamism, such as in this image of Keong Saik Street. In the next, Dequick captures the mix of modern and traditional in Singapore's architectural landscape with this shot of Chinatown.

ON S I N G A P O R EDequick reveals that he has visited Singapore twice.

“Many art photography collectors had been asking for photographs of Singapore, so I organised a special shoot for the YellowKorner portfolio. On my fi rst trip, I was blown away by the futuristic quality of the buildings. On my second trip, I began to look at the city differently. It’s modern, yes, but also traditional with its shophouses and other historical architecture.”

Churning out delicious traditional fare – that’s what Food Opera is known for. The renovated outlet promises 27 stalls, over half of them new entrants. Even so, you’ll be glad to note some nostalgic names, where you can order up a serving of tradition done right.

The fi rst on our list, Sergeant Hainanese Chicken Rice, was started by one of Mandarin Hotel’s Chatterbox Chicken Rice pioneers, Sergeant Kiang. Knowing that not everyone enjoys taking sides when it comes to choosing between steamed and roasted chicken, it offers a Duo Style Chicken Rice ($7.50) that includes both, so that you don’t have to. Be sure to add the tangy ginger and garlic-chilli sauces for a suitably spicy kick!

There there’s Ah Yat Kitchen – widely regarded as the master of abalone. From humble beginnings in Hong Kong back in the 1970s, it expanded to over seven countries, bringing with it its much-loved repe rtoire of abalone dishes and

Cantonese favourites. To get a taste of its rich heritage, order the signature Ah Yat Abalone Baked Rice ($8.80). Fragrant egg fried rice topped with succulent baby abalone and then oven baked, this aromatic dish features Ah Yat’s famed secret recipe abalone sauce.

Nothing beats the comfort of a robust bowl of bak kut teh for a power pick-me-up. There’s no lack of pork bone soup brands in Singapore, but popular Yah Hua Bak Kut Teh has been around for over 40 years. Founder Madam Gwee Peck Hua created her own recipe that uses garlic, white pepper from Sarawak, and air-fl own chilled pork from Australia and Indonesia to achieve the perfect peppery broth that’s true to her Teochew roots.

Carrying premium whiskies that are not widely available around the world, The Whisky Distillery specialises in rare single malts from various regions in Scotland. An avid whisky collector whose 10-year love affair is “a passion

turned obsession”, Christopher Lee enthuses: “Each cask has a personality – you must get to know each individually.” He clues us in on where to begin with the fl agship store’s collection.

Lee starts with a Royal Lochnagar 31-year-old single cask (below). The Lochnagar distillery received its Royal Warrant following an 1848 visit by Queen Victoria. “Just like wine has a bouquet, whisky has a ‘nose’. This was love at fi rst sniff for me,” he says. Redolent of dried fruit and almonds, this rare whisky was distilled in 1981 and bottled in 2012. The entire cask of 194 bottles is exclusive to The Whisky Distillery.

According to Lee, the Bowmore 21-year-old Port Cask Matured is the whisky equivalent of sweet and sour pork: “The nose carries a harmony of richness and plums from the cask’s original contents of port and the salt smokiness

SHOP AT: THE WHISKY DISTILLERY #04-23

of the Bowmore – unexpected for a single malt.” This 1988 distillation has also been described by Iain Macallum, former senior

blender at Morrison Bowmore, as “perfection in a glass”.

One of only three distilleries in Scotland with the Royal Warrant, the Glenury closed for good in 1985. The limited edition Glenury

Royal 1970 40-year-old is one of its oldest bottlings, of which there are only

1,500 in the world. Spicy and fruity, with lots of oak notes, its scarcity makes for a good talking point, says Lee.

From left: Shoppers interacting with live birds at Spring Soundscape. A view of the garden from outside.

ION Orchard kicked off an exciting season of festivities in March with new and refurbished stores. One of the highlights was an exciting performance by internationally renowned Italian gymnast Ada Ossola, in an aerial acrobatic interpretation of ballet set against a backdrop of ION Orchard’s duplex storefronts. There were also new openings such as Tiffany & Co. and Van Cleef & Arpels, unique flagships like Laneige, as well as refreshed stores like the Dior duplex boutique, all ready to provide an engaging and personalised experience for shoppers.

And to help usher in the spring/summer season, Spring Soundscape was built – a colossal outdoor birdcage that allowed shoppers to be closer to nature amid the hustle and bustle of city life. Visitors could interact by touching the hanging vines, and hearing the sounds of waterfalls, running streams and singing birds.

BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY’SOn April 8, 150 VIP guests, socialites and tastemakers arrived bright and early for the opening of Tiffany & Co.’s street-front-facing duplex store at ION Orchard. The two-story Tiffany Blue facade sports carvings with a wheat leaf pattern similar to the frames at the entrance of its Fifth Avenue fl agship store. Inside, guests were treated to a sumptuous breakfast that included champagne, oysters and caviar, while admiring the 5,000 sq ft store decked out in white marble, amazonite stone borders and leather-accented walls. The boutique’s grand stairway welcomed guests to its fi ne jewellery collection and bridal salon.

Guests and VIPs were treated to a gorgeous display of exclusive high jewellery – specially fl own in for the event – and an interactive showcase called The Pearl Bar, which presented information about the company and its jewellery. It was also an occasion to celebrate confi dent women with successful careers and fulfi lling lives. One such person was chef-artist Janice Wong, who wowed everyone with an edible art installation inspired by the beautiful waters surrounding the Mikimoto Pearl Island in Japan.
